This property is right off the main highway yet secluded on 3 acres. A great home base for exploring the whole island, it is about an hour and a half from both Kona and Hilo. You can go to some great beaches, hit the town, and still make it home before dark to cook up some fresh Ahi. You have panoramic ocean and mountain views from the front of your Lanai. My caretaker/property manager Philippe lives on site. He is an avid gardener, very friendly, and a great host. He is willing to help you with your vacation plans and needs, as well as make your stay on the property as enjoyable as possible.

Limes, jackfruit, breadfruit, papayas, oranges, mangos avocados, tangerines, olives, bananas, and macadamia nuts grow naturally on the property and are usually available. Philippe has many beautiful vegetable gardens that he also shares with the guests. They have some great organic greens including broccoli, kale, and lettuce just to name a few.

Parking is provided.

Great place to stay. Nice quiet area to stay and explore rest of island. The unit is good sized and well maintained. The kitchen is well supplied and the lack of oven was not a big deal, toaster oven worked well. We stayed here for our entire two week visit and were able to enjoy numerous island treasures and still get back for a quiet evening meal. Nice to be so close to Volcano National Park, let us view both day and night time features of the park. A benefit I enjoyed was having the washer and dryer at our disposal, sure saved on packing. The bakeries in Naalehu were also a favorite stopping place for us. I have some beautiful sunrise pictures from the balcony and sunset pictures from South Point where we were also entertained by the whales. Thanks for allowing us to use your property for a wonderful 40th anniversay trip

The unit was clean, and convenient, just as described on VRBO. This is a good price and perfect for those who are looking for a nice place to stay at an affordable rate. I might suggest installing a fan and possibly another TV in the bedroom as it tended to get quite hot at night. Caregiver was very friendly and property was peaceful and inviting.

We stayed at several places in Hawaii, but this vacation home was one of the best! Nice and quiet area, with lots to see within 1/2 hour drive! The accommodation was very clean and the kitchen has everything you need, perfect if you want to cook your own meal. There's also a very nice restaurant just up the road. Sean was very correct in the booking and we got back our security deposit in no more than 7 business days. We absolutely enjoyed our stay and if we ever make it to Hawaii again, we would return to Sean's place for sure!

This is a lovely quiet spot off the beaten path with a wonderful view and grounds. We have been here before and will continue to use it as a weekend get away. I appreciate the quality furnishings and cleanliness that makes this an "upscale" accommodation when compared to other rentals. We feel a comforting sense of security here. I love that there are no extra costs which make this perfect and affordable. Management is very personable and welcoming. The satellite TV and internet are a great feature. This is a great place to kick back. There are many sight seeing and adventure activities within 1/2 hour drive. We love to hike and have found many opportunities here. The Canoe ladders at South Point and the coast always offer up a bit of local culture and history, whales, finding a swimming cove, or just exploring. There are a few nice spots to explore over towards Punaluu as well. The 1000' altitude of this spot offers cool breezes with a panoramic view. Thank you Sean for the opportunity to use your place. We have had a challenging time finding a place that is so nice.

My fiance-turned-husband and I had a wonderful time here (we eloped on the Big Island). The location is great for seeing lots of different parts of the island- it's not too far to Kona, Honaunau, Volcano National Park, and Hilo, and is super-close to Green Sands Beach and Punalu'u. The location of the house is perfect- it's quiet, serene, and just a short drive to the town of Na'alehu, which has a grocery store for all your needs (and a surprisingly deep selection of microbrew beers). We enjoyed the view from the lanai, listening to tropical birds, and the overall atmosphere of the house. Plus, the two resident dogs (Kona and Hana) were wonderful visitors and were happy to get belly rubs when we saw them. We would definitely stay here again.

This was my third trip to the Big Island, and certainly my favorite place to stay. I think all future trips my wife and I will be staying here. The area is quiet and serene. The nights beautiful with star filled skies. You can see the sun come up over the ocean from the property. This is not a crowded, crazy, tourist area. It is the complete opposite. The Kau district sits between the two main areas, giving you the ability every morning to choose from, stay around here, go Kona, or go Hilo. We did all three. If you like hiking, check out the Kahuku unit of HVNP. Recently opened, beautiful, and the entrance is 5 minutes from this home. Was only open on weekends when we stayed (wish I knew that, I only got to go for one day). If you are REAL adventurous, google "Pohue Bay." The upstairs unit we stayed in was perfect for a couple. A lovely bathroom, separate bedroom with a big comfy king size bed, full closet, dressers, etc. Had a nice TV with satellite to unwind with at the end of a long day of snorkeling or hiking. The wireless internet was there, didn't work perfectly (had to go outside and sit on the lawn under a macadamia nut tree to get reception, oh no), but the owner assured us he was in process of fixing that shortly. The best was the kitchen. 4 burner stove, lots of utensils, knives, plates, bowls, full fridge, coffee pot, and a microwave. My wife and I are "foodies." I love, love, love Hawaiian fish. There was a little market just 10min up the road in Ocean View, where we were able to buy fresh caught Ahi and Mahimahi. Then we could go back to this lovely kitchen, and cook up a meal for $15 which would have been $80 in any restaurant in Kona. We did the same with Big Island beef steaks, fresh local eggs for breakfast every morning, brewed coffee that was probably grown less than a mile away, and I even figured out how to make breadfruit delicious (cook forever and add coconut milk). There were (at the time), two dogs on the property. Both complete sweethearts. We spent a couple mornings and afternoons outside, sitting with them, showering them with attention, which they loved. The owner (Sean) even brought us a bucket of uncracked Macadamia nuts off the tree on the property, along with a industrial strength nut cracker (mac nuts are the toughest in the world). After we devoured them, he brought us a bigger bucket. ;) In short, I strongly recommend this place. Thanks, Sean, hope to talk to you again.

We had an awesome trip, because we decided to have the apartment in Na'alehu as our home base. It went perfectly. We were able to have day trips to the Volcano and Puna, as well as south and north Kona, then come back to make dinner in the full kitchen. It was so convenient! The next door neighbors were totally gracious and the guys who live on the property we sweet and helpful, too! We had a hike on the property which is huge and had the cutest canine escorts with us the whole time. This is a great place to stay for anyone who wants to go out exploring during the day and come back to chill out at "home" during the night. There's an awesome bakery nearby and black sand beach full of turtles just up the road! We loved it! Thanks guys!!! Kirsten and Erin

We stayed here for 3 nights while traveling around the island. It's a perfect location for exploring the South Point area. We drove down the South Point road and hiked out to Green Sands Beach. The spectacular view as you approach the cliffs made it worth the dusty 1 hr. hike, but we did hitch a very bumpy ride back on a pickup. (The going rate is $15 a person, round trip if you're not up for the hike.) The kitchen was well-equipped (no oven, but there is a range top and a toaster oven and microwave, and full-size fridge). Mahalo to Sean for his help and hospitality.

We've been coming to this part of the Big Island for 7 years and by far, this is the most serene and delightful place to stay. You cannot beat the view or the light breeze that flows through this part of the island. The accommodations were as described if not better; clean, comfortable and all in working order. Al is as described in other reviews, simply great, well spoken and delightful. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 1 month stay in the guesthouse. The apartment was very well maintained and decorated and provided me with all the convenience and comforts of home. The view from the lanai is gorgeous. The guesthouse proved to be a perfect home base for exploring the Big Island on day trips by bus and bicycle. Sean and Al were very good hosts and very considerate of my vacation needs. The property is an ideal location for a retreat or getaway within walking distance to the village of Na'alehu (3 miles exactly) yet within easy travelling distance by car or bus to Kailua-Kona and Hilo. A wonderful vacation experience! Mahalo.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: Aloha and thank you for visiting my website. My name is Sean Barre', and I am a lifelong musician who is currently studying and playing music in Los Angeles, California with an emphasis in production and engineering. I am very involved with this property and spend time there every year. I enjoy going out of my way to make sure that when guests choose to vacation with me, they leave with a positive and unforgettable experience.

              Why the Owner Chose Naalehu:
This part of the Big Island is very special in many ways. It has that 'Real Hawaii' feel about it. It is very scenic, with many unique attractions. The 'country' atmosphere creates a very quiet, peaceful, and serene environment. The property is located very close to South Point, (the southern most part of land in the United States, more than Key West). The weather is usually sunny, 75-85 degrees, with modest rain and no Vog, as well as good humidity.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The beautiful panoramic ocean view from the lanai is literally breath taking. The rolling hills and lush scenery are a true blessing to wake up to. There are many natural growing fruit trees, and the property provides great safety, seclusion, as well as privacy from other vacationers/caretaker. There are two very friendly dogs on site named Kona and Hana that are brother and sister. Every guest I have ever had really enjoys my dog Kona's company. He is a bit of a Rock Star on the property, and he has a great temperament. The picture above is of him.
