    • Tom, We really enjoyed our stay at the house in Northport. Loved being in town so people could go places on their own, but right near the water--beach & marina are RIGHT there, just walk through the yard! My daughter even took the BATA bus into Traverse City one day to visit camp friends! What a great feature, connecting all the towns between Northport and Traverse City! We loved the new tennis courts in town too, and the concert at the marina park on Thursday—we snagged ourselves a picnic table early and had a big feast while listening. The park is right there (with grills and picnic tables) perfect for a picnic by the water, which we did a few times. There’s a nice picnic table in the back yard, too, for cookouts at home. Having the washer & dryer was really convenient, even though linens ARE provided, and there really was a great deal of space in the house, perfect for a large group. I, myself, passed many happy hours on the screened-in front porch, while the others took off for sight seeing activities, including the wineries, lighthouse, etc. The library downtown was great—public computers as well as wi-fi, kept the e-mailers happy! Grocery store and other downtown stuff in easy walking distance, too. A great town for a bike... next time I will bring mine! Plenty of places to walk for food or a drink “out,” at night, as well. We had a great time! A perfect inter-generational vacation including our in-laws and our two teens. Everyone was well entertained. Thanks again, Laura

    • This is a sweet old house, a comfortable space that feels welcoming and relaxing. A great vibe. You can see the water from the living room window and walk to Northport's small downtown in about 58 seconds. Tom is a friendly guy and made us feel more than welcome. We're fans of Northport and its surroundings and are hugely glad that we found the Captain's Cottage.

    • Cheerful little historic house in the village, this is a great place for family memories to start. You can walk to the beach and Northport's wonderful marina without even crossing the street! Ice cream and Northport's famous cinnamon twists are a short block away. Very little traffic so it's great for biking and walking. A wonderful art gallery just 1/2 a block away with many others in the area. Many interesting shops in the area too. And Music in the Park every Friday night. Comfort and convenience, this cottage has it all!

    • Northport is such a neat little town and this house is perfectly located to take advantage of it all. The beach is so close and my kids loved walking to the library, store and up to Barb's Bakery for a cinnamon twist! The house has everything you need for cooking and the bathroom looks recently remodeled. The area has many things to do, wonderful restaurants, wine tasting, shopping, casino, hiking the trails at Leelanau State Park, biking, sightseeing and the sunset at Peterson Park is a must-do!

A ship's carpenter, James Washburn, came to Northport in the mid-1860's with his wife, Lorena, and son, Albert. Over the next few years he built several houses in the Northport area. Most of the James Washburn houses no longer are in existence. The Captain's Cottage is where he lived with his family in the 1870's and 1880's. This house is #2 on the Northport Historic Homes Tour. The Captian's Cottage has been a family retreat, for the Larkin family, for almost 40 years. Many celebrations, good times, and summer vacations have been spent there. We hope that the love, and laughter, that is contained in these walls rubs off on our guests. We are sure that you will enjoy the house as much as we have. We will do all that we can to make your stay a happy, and memorable, one. Don't hesitate to call, or email us, with any questions that you might have. Here's to the summer of 2009. The best ever! Tom & Kathy Larkin
