The house is called Mary Duggan's because traditionally houses in Ireland were called by their owner's name. The Dugan family lived in this valley for hundreds of years. The house is situated in the heart of rural West Cork. The coast is about 5 miles away. The house is in easy reach of the thriving market towns of Bantry, Schull and Skibbereen.
West Cork is full of surprises: spectacular landscapes, good walking (Mount Kid on your doorstep-and the local Sheep's Head way, a lovely 2 day hike), a wonderful sandy beach at Barley Cove and many secret beaches along the coast are all worth exploring. The West Cork area is also the home of artisan food producers; there are weekly markets where you can buy the local cheeses (some award winners), charcuterie, bread, fish and vegetables. There is also a large organic market.
Local Pubs are full of local craic and music. The nearest village, Ballydehob, has 11 pubs in one street. There are classical concerts in nearby Bantry House. There are many artists and craftsman working in the area too. In all it is a wonderful, friendly combination of rural and cosmopolitan. Everyone mixes and the atmosphere is very welcoming and warm. It's just as good in Winter as it is in the Summer.
An added bonus is our neighbors, Chris and Pattie, who live a mile away on Mount Kid. They look after the house and can also look after you. Chris is a professional chef and Pattie is a wonderful host. If you want, they could entertain in their lovely farmhouse, or just provide you with a ready meal at Mary Duggan's after a long day out, when all you may wish to do is crash and enjoy staying around the homestead. (Note-any arrangements need to be negotiated separately from the rent-but I recommend you try it!)
So, why not try this haven of peace, whatever the time of year, peaceful and fun in an unforgettable location. (There is also a lovely hidden stream on the property of 11 acres)
