Modernized Idyllic 300 Year Old Stone Thatched Cottage

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Vire

On our first visit to the area we were struck by the quiet, unhurried and calm atmosphere and were overwhemed by the friendly welcome we got from the French. This area was badly affected in World War 2 and there is still a deep affection for the Allied forces for the liberation and the sacrifices they made. The region boasts a wealth of fine restaurants, mostly family run, where the food is prepared from first principles at very reasonable prices. If you want to leave behind the stresses of modern day living for a quiet and peaceful location then this is the place for you. Within 5 miles the market town of Vire offers all facilities with every shop you could possibly need and a bustling market each week. For more local involvement the village of Champ du Boult is only 1 mile from the cottage and there you can get fresh bread and cakes baked on the premises or have a drink at the local bar. This is why we chose the property!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage

The location is ideally placed(3 miles) near a lake(fishing)and a superb 18 hole golf course. The countryside is ideal for walking. Our friendly French neighbours run a small farm and the fresh eggs are to die for! The Housekeeper lives nearby and is English so language is not a problem and she is happy to answer any queries you may have.

Owner's Map of Vire

After 10 years together we eventually married on New Years Eve 2003. As we had sold our schools equipment mail order business we travelled the world on many different types of holiday. Eventually, in 2007, we arrived in the Calvados Region of Normandy near a delightful market town of Vire. We were so struck by the area that we spent a day of the holiday with real estate agents! La Pelviniere is a 300 year old, stone, thatched cottage that was in need a a little TLC!! We spent the next 18 months completely renovating it to a very high standard to highlight the original wood and stone features whilst ensuring that it benefited from all modern fixtures, furnishing and comforts demanded by todays travellers. We hope you like it. Stephen & Eileen Plummer, Ashby, Leicestershire, England

What an exceptional experience! We loved this 'cottage' ... and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who enjoys experiencing 'the real France'! The cottage was LOVELY! Clean and new! We used it as our home base during our BUSY day trip schedule which included Caen, DDay Beaches, Bayeaux, Mt St Michel, St Malo, Chartres, ETC! There was a lot to see! Our hosts were very accommodating .... we will likely visit again! The Hofers - Chicago and Toronto

My family (wife and 3 boys) had a great time. The house was a wonderful experience . Gave us a real appreciation for the French countryside with the neighbors rooster, cows and horses. Since the kids were studying WW2 , we visited the Normandy coast with the 35 yr celebration. We also enjoyed a great restaurant about a half hour away in the farm fields which was fabulous ( cant remember the name). There are incredible places to drive to all within one hour. The house was clean , recently remodeled, beds were very comfortable. My only recommendation is to dehumidify the house before visitors arrive. It rained several days and the house was pretty humid. thanks again for letting use your cottage.

Owner response:This sums up why we bought the house after staying in the area with lots to do and great French Food at reasonable prices at small local friendly restaurants. After 18 months complete renovation(remodelling?) we are glad you enjoyed it.Unfortunately we cannot control the weather but turn the heating up and the cottage is warm and cosy especially with the log fire roaring! We had a fabulous time at La Pelviniere –you really know how to make a ‘good’ cottage ‘great’!! Everthing about the cottage was perfect and we had the “Why don’t WE have a cottage here” conversation again!!

We had a wonderful time. The cottage was very well equipped and there is lots to do in the area. If you like Fish & Chips they are sold from a van in the village on Thursday and you can eat them in the bar opposite.

What a wonderful cottage in a fantastic location. We came to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life and that is what we got. The children enjoyed the garden.great place within easy reach of lots of places. Alligater Bay near Mont St. Michel was a favourite with both children. A lovely welcome from Steve & Eileen(the owners) who were really nice & easy people to deal with. Thanks.

Beautiful house, best we have stayed in. Restaurant in St. Germaine excellent. The snow made everything look Christmasy so we played carols! Lovely selection of games and music. The house was so cosy to come back to. It is so well equipped we were able to cook some lovely meals with some yummy French food.
