This newly constructed seaside cottage is located on the very private west side of Matinicus Island. It has spectacular 180 degree ocean front views, beautiful sunsets and access to the shore with a great pebble beach. It was built to replicate a 1940s cottage and has a large front porch with comfortable Adirondack chairs, a hammock swing and lots of room for outside relaxation and ocean viewing. It will easily sleep 10-12 people and has plenty of space to share with extended family and friends. The cottage has a warm and cozy feel with hard wood floors, beamed ceilings and a propane stove fireplace. The main level has an inviting reading nook and a back room that doubles as a bedroom or den as well as a kitchen, dining area, laundry, full bath and deck with outdoor shower. The second floor has a full bath and four comfortable bedrooms including the master which overlooks the ocean to the west.

Matinicus is located 23 miles from Rockland, Maine in Penobscot Bay. The island is a wonderful place to get away from it all, a place for relaxation and exploration, hiking and biking. There are no paved roads and everything is within walking distance since the island is only one mile wide by two miles long. Matinicus is also a natural bird sanctuary with hiking trails through spruce forests that lead to the shore. The beautiful ocean vistas are astounding.

Matinicus has two beautiful public sand beaches that are wonderful for swimming and collecting shells. The island is a working fishing community, not a tourist island, although visitors are always welcome as long as they don't expect to be waited on. You can buy live lobster from the local fishermen and fresh baked bread and sweets from a resident baker. There is a small artisan's shop to visit and the island residents host a local crafts fair once a week during July and August.

Getting to the island is part of the adventure with George Tarkleson of Matinicus Excursions. He runs his boat taxi from Rockland to Matinicus almost every day during the summer.

Flying is also a great option with Penobscot Island Air out of Knox County Airport in Owls Head, Maine.

Both companies have web pages on the internet for more information.

By: Brendan Lawrence “Welcome to Matinicus Island.” Those four words are some of the best I have ever heard. They mean the beginning of two weeks of fun and family. I hear them and know that I am about to set foot on my favorite place on Earth. We pull into the harbor, and I see all different types of boats. They are many colors, including red, white, black, and blue. I step onto the harbor, and I can feel the rough dirt road under my feet. My family and I climb into the rusty pickup, ready to go to the cabin. In the distance, I can hear the gulls cawing in excitement as a lobsterman dumps extra bait into the cold Matinicus waters. We drive by the church, and I can see the weathered, happy faces of the islanders that are gathered for the Farmers Market. I can smell the flowers that are buzzing with fat yellow bumble bees. After I unpack, I decide to go for a walk with my sister, Meaghan, to the beach. We walk down the road, and the low hum of a four-seater plane comes to us. The islanders are all friendly, smiling and waving. Soon, the sweet aroma of sticky buns and doughnuts lure us into the bakery. The baker is standing there, and she says hello. I ask her how she has been, and soon decide to buy a doughnut. My taste buds are delighted when I bite into it. The path we are taking is a beautiful one, surrounded by pines and flowers. It brings us by a cliff, and I can see the waves gently lapping against the rocks below. Finally, Meaghan and I arrive at the beach. Our toes sink into the moist sand. Meaghan wades into the water, and I soon follow her. Her foot steps down on something, and she reaches down and pulls up…a sand dollar! Soon though, we realize that the sky is darkening, and we hurry home for dinner. Too soon, it is time to leave. My Uncle John pulls up the boat, and I think about all the good times I had this year. The boat pulls away from the harbor, and I smile and think to myself, “Only 365 days until I am back on my favorite place on Earth.”

Mary Jo and I saw a dot on the map in the ocean as we were planning our first trip back to Maine in five years. "What's that?", was the question. The answer is: John and Kim Libby's cottage on Matinicus Island. Birds, waves, and the occasional lobster boat are all you hear. The house itself is perfect. Four sisters, one husband, and five kids came out with us on Captain Tarkleson's boat, the Robin R. With South Beach, Markey Beach, Matinicus Trail, Nat's store and music, Eva's bakery, and Donna's (24!) lobsters's, we simply could not have found a better place to all get together. We had stunning sunsets (I mean like out of this world beautiful), wonderful mornings, and great luck beachcombiing for beach glass and sand dollars. The kids would leave the house, happy to be playing together, and come back singing. The folks that we ran into on the island were all friendly, and we got to know some of them, their kids, and thier dogs, as well - now, that's a small island. We picked fresh rasberries right off of the bushes, and are about two weeks early for the blackberries. If shooting photographs is your thing, bring two cameras - the views are exceptional. No one I know had ever heard of Matinicus Island. I grew up in Maine, as did my sisters. But this 'dot' on the map is one of the best places anywhere on the planet. If finding peace, and discovering how to relax again are part of what you want on your next vacation, contact John and Kim. They have been nothing but kind and responsive, and the place lives up to what they say it is. I write this with one evening left. When John and I first started talking, he said that he and Kim's goal is have folks wish that they didn't have to leave. Turning my head to the ocean, the waves making a lullaby to the afternoon, John and Kim have succeeded - we have to leave, and get back to our lives - and, we don't want to. Thank you, John and Kim - this is a place that we want to make our way back to in the future. David Roy Mary Jo Ziegman Fort Collins - Colorado

My entire family rented this gorgeous cottage in the summer of 2008, and can't imagine a better one. That is, unless we make it back there! We chartered out a boat to get there, because in the end that was cheaper than the ferry and the dates worked out better. Once we arrived, we had the taxi on the island bring us to the cottage. The inside is immaculate and was roomy enough for all of us (10). Loved the design of everything! We lucked out and the entire week was beautiful weather and could explore the island (bakery, gift shop, etc). Everyone on the island was so kind. This was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience and will try our hardest to return. P.S. Lobster was delicious!!
