One week Quintana Beach getaway

Guest: Austin Kayak Toter (Austin, TX)
Date of Stay: 05/06/12 Review Submitted: 05/18/12

Myself (57yo Male), My Wife (52yo), My Mother In Law (73yo) and our two dogs (a Schnauzer & Jack Russell Terrier) stayed for a week beginning 5/6/2012. My sister (56yo) drove in from Houston to join us for one night. This house has a lot going for it, not the least of which is a "Million Dollar 180 degree view" of the beach and Gulf Of Mexico from the front porch. Hot Tub, Check. Fenced in area below, that was secure for our two small spoiled dogs, Check. (Our world revolves around our pampered pooches and that was a big factor in us choosing this beach house for our one week getaway) Located at end of the road and fairly secluded, Check. Comfortable beds, Check. Central Air cooled sufficiently, Check. We found everything to be as advertised. Our stay just happened to coincide with a heavy influx of Sargassum Seaweed that literally covered the entire beach in both directions as far as the eye could see. My wife and Mother-In-Law were still able to enjoy some good walks w/ the dogs down on the beach. Dogs are required to be on a leash at Quintana and we did not see any other dogs or really not many other people on the beach during the week that we stayed there. We also enjoyed a pretty good storm rolling through one evening with very healthy wind gusts, lightning show and stirred up surf. It was great! Definitely an abundance of birds to observe, sea gulls, pelicans, swallows, etc. Very nice. I car-topped a Kayak down w/ me from Austin and took it fishing in near by Drum Bay on several mornings. The bait shop at the base of the bridge on the Quintana side had live shrimp and ice. After about a 20 minute drive I launched at county rd 257L about mid-bay. Wind was just not cooperating (west wind about 20+ knots) and although I saw plenty of bait, the water was chocolate and nary a bite was to be had.. Although I did not have much luck I did observe about 4 young fisherman fishing the surf just down from the house one evening. They looked to be steadily pulling one Sheephead after another out using dead shrimp with a weight. I did eventually catch some fish (Red Snapper) using my wallet at Captain Mark's Seafood which is located in Freeport. 603 W 2nd St, Freeport, TX 77541. Highly recommend a visit there if you are looking for fresh seafood to cook at home. So very pleasant experience and would definitely do it again without hesitation. Definitely have no qualms about recommending this property to anyone looking for a great beach get away. : )

Renter beware!

Guest: Jim (Houston, TX)
Date of Stay: 05/03/12 Review Submitted: 05/12/12

I recently rented this house (early May, 2012) and would caution those considering renting it. There were two major issues. First, while this place is on the beach, the beach was covered with a thick coating of seaweed and other debris. At the waterline, it was at least a foot thick. The local people I consulted said this was a seasonal thing and it would remain there until Mother Nature somehow disposed of it, i.e. there was no beach cleaning in this area. The problem was so bad that the beach was not usable even for walking, let alone lounging or swimming. Second, the water in the house was not drinkable. It had a bad odor and a muddy color. There is a sign in the house with directions to a local agency that provides free “good” water, if you go there with gallon containers. The owner (or someone) had placed several gallon milk cartons filled with water in the kitchen, but we were reluctant to use it since we had no idea who placed it there, when it was place there, where it came from or how thoroughly the milk jugs had been cleaned. If you rent this place, I would advise taking a supply of bottled water. On the positive side, this house is essentially on the beach and has a great view of the Gulf from its balcony. A hot tub on the balcony is a nice treat when the temperature is cooler. If you like privacy, this place is remotely located at the end of a sparsely populated road. There is a least one good restaurant within 5 minutes (On The River) and grocery stores are about 15 minutes away in Lake Jackson. There is satellite TV, plenty of board games and a few DVD’s for indoor activities. The house is minimally maintained, but furnishings are adequate. While it was relatively clean, the toilets were severely stained (we cleaned them with the provided supplies) and there was a thin film of dust/grit on some flat surfaces. (It appeared that no one had been in the house for a while before we arrived, and it had not recently been dusted). There are two decent sized bedrooms with queen beds and a very small (hallway) with bunk beds. To sleep more than 6 requires using two futons that serve as couches in the main living area. It has a shower in one bath and a bathtub in the other, but the water was so discolored that no one was game to use the tub. Central air conditioning is barely adequate. A window unit in one bedroom helps that room. The AC is on a timer and turns off a night. Even in moderately warm May, it got stuffy at night.

Owner response:The comment regarding the seaweed is somewhat correct. In the spring when there is a storm in the Atlantic, the ocean deposits seaweed on the sand. The city considers it nourishment and does mot remove it. The beach IS USEABLE. The water is potable, however is is highly metalic causing it to be discolored and taste "funny". The city provides spring water at city hall at no charge. The "gallon water bottles" are provided as easy containers. You can purchase your own bottles and fill at city hall at no charge The AC is not on a timer it is set by a thermostat. The home was rented the week before he arrived and is rented for about 95% of peak time, and about 50 % of non peak time.

Fourth Time Around...

Guest: M (North Texas)
Date of Stay: 03/23/12 Review Submitted: 04/02/12

For the fourth time I've rented it, John and Pat's house was perfect as could be. In my prior review, I mentioned the "funny" smelling Quintana water and I need to update -- the water smell appears to be strongly correlated with the drought Texas has suffered. The area has gotten plenty of rain recently and during our stay, the water at the house smelled just fine. Still drank bottled water but simply because I had already purchased some. The rest of my prior review is still accurate -- the house couldn't have been a better and John was very kind in my dealings with him. Have another trip booked in May. It is difficult to choose a different place to vacation when this little Quintana gem gets it right every time.

Reluctant to review...

Guest: M (North Texas)
Date of Stay: 10/13/11 Review Submitted: 11/01/11

I'm reluctant to review this property because I'm afraid if adequately described how lovely it is, there may never be a vacancy again. First of all -- John (owner) and the people he's hired to tend the house are all wonderful people. John is prompt, flexible, and easy to work with. I feel like his prices are reasonable considering what a great place it is. The location: Quintana. You should know what you're getting into. Or rather, not getting into. There's one bait camp and one restaurant and ... that's pretty much it. This is, of course, exactly the kind of vacation we want/love, so it is no big thing to us. We usually make it up to Clute for El Toro once and we will hit Sunflower Cafe if we cross SLP, but other than that, we eat at home. There is no nightlife to speak of unless you go over to Galveston. This place is the beach. Nothing more but nothing less. The house: again, I reiterate -- this place is the beach. You're coming for the sunset at the Point and the stars and the sound and the smell. You're not coming for a Four Seasons experience. If you want that, I suggest staying at the Four Seasons. The house, though, is imminently liveable. The hot tub on the deck is really all you'll care about. Sure, there's beds. A functional kitchen. Two baths and a handy washer/dryer. But trust me, all you care about is that hot tub. The tap water smells funny (where "funny" is meant to be a euphemism) and you really should bring your own or take advantage of the gallon jugs provided and haul some from Quintana City Hall. And honestly, it is not a big deal at all if you're prepared for it. And I am a picky, picky vacationer. That is truly the only enduring "negative" thing I have to say about this place. If you think of it as kind of like lake house meets base camp -- albeit a very nice one with killer view and location -- you'll get the idea. It is a bit rustic but you really don't care. Cause you're at the beach, which, even on a bad day, is better than a good day pretty much anywhere else. Other things -- mosquitoes, sea grape, fussy weather, etc. -- these are transient/seasonal and accept their possibility as part of a any trip to the coast. Have I enjoyed my three stays at this house? An unqualified yes. Just make sure your trip doesn't conflict with mine and leave the house cleaner and better than you found it :) Thanks, John and Pat, for the opportunity to make memories at your pla

Comfortable and beautiful location!

Guest: Pangra (Canon City, CO USA)
Date of Stay: 07/31/11 Review Submitted: 08/13/11

We spent a week at this lovely home and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We have two teenage daughters who loved the easy access to the beach and comfortable living spaces for reading, napping, and hanging out. Our little terrier chased waves and land crabs and seagulls all week, and rested comfortably inside when the day was over. The house is equipped with everything we needed with one minor omission - we went looking for measuring cups and couldn't find any! But that was it, and we improvised. :-) Beds, linens, sofas and all are very clean and comfortable. We made extensive use of the outdoor shower for rinsing sand from head to toe and head to paws. Loved the secluded location that had the added benefit of a quick drift into town if needed. We went to Lake Jackson to see a movie on night, and drove over to Seaside for a walk on the pier and lunch at Kitty's Purple Cow, which was very good! All in all a highly successful experience. The rental is an economic choice that absolutely met our needs. Oh, and the fishing is excellent! BBQed red fish several nights!

Rented this wonderful beach house twice!

Guest: Scott H.
Date of Stay: 07/02/11 Review Submitted: 07/27/11

John is great to work with! The beach house has everything you would want! We like the seclusion, the crowds of Galveston are fun for a while but it's good to come back to Quintana Beach to chill. We were there July 4th so the beach was a little crowded but not in front of the beach house. There is a lake behind the house to fish and crab and you have the ocean in front, the best of both worlds! Caught lots of crab and had many crabfests! It has a hot tub with a nice patio to sit and watch the ocean view. I highly recommend this beach house.

A Great Escape

Guest: Jerri W.
Date of Stay: 06/18/11 Review Submitted: 07/02/11

This house had all you needed to relax and enjoy the great view of the beach. The morning walks with coffee and the dog. Very Pet friendly owner. Secure area for kids and pets. The hot tub in the evenings looking at the stars, is also very nice. The house is so comfortable and has all you need but your own food. It was clean and the weather could not of been better during our stay. You should check out the City Hall and the Bird Sancuary across the street from City Hall, also reading the history of Quintanna was interesting and the owner has that at the house. The only bad part, is you dont want to leave .

We just rented this home for a week and loved every minute of it. The weather wasn't ideal every day, but it didn't matter because of the hot tub and the lake. Even with marginal weather, there was always something to do as a family. The house is well stocked with everything you need for your vacation. Just bring sunscreen, your clothes and groceries and you'll have the time of your life!

Fantastic Rental House

Guest: Mike (Dallas)
Date of Stay: 02/16/11 Review Submitted: 03/01/11

John runs a great rental, he's easy to work with and prompt as well. As for the house, its perfect, hot tub that overlooks the beach on the second story deck, it's got a huge kitchen and two full baths, one with a very large tub for two. Besides the great owner and house, the salt water pond behind the property is great for less sporty water activities, and if the Gulf is calm and the weather is clear you can see for miles from the beach, from the house or from the deck, in the hot tub with a friend. We had 10 adults and had plenty of room, with the three bedrooms and the 2 baths. The large kitchen served us well for the meals and we had storage on the side deck as well as a place to grill out. John also provided games, cable TV, fishing and crabing equipment, water toys and more. I would use this house again, and plan to do so in fall of this year. A great place for your family or friends!

Great Beach Vacation

Guest: Family of 4 (East Texas)
Date of Stay: 10/03/10 Review Submitted: 10/19/10

Although this is a public beach, it was very peaceful and quiet. The evenings were cool so we left our windows open all night, to the peaceful sounds of the ocean. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed....loved the deck for reading, relaxing, just watching the beach and ocean. We had great walks along the beach and did a lot of surf fishing and some crabbing. We did enjoy the fishing even though the fish were not cooperating. Also, the owner had the yard and area around the dock on the lake in back mowed and trimmed so it was easy access. The owner has the house equipped with games, videos, books, etc. It would be great for kids at night. Freeport is within 5 minutes and Lake Jackson is about 15 minutes away. We even drove to Galveston one day; an hour or less away. Our deposit was returned to us less than a week after we returned home; the owners are very helpful and friendly.

Wonderful place for a family vacation. We enjoyed being so close to the beach and we also enjoyed all the places that we could go fishing. The kids loved under the house which was enclosed with lattice and a gate. They played down there and you didn't have to worry about them. They also loved hunting for crabs and seashells. We will most definetly consider renting this place again. There was a lot of room for a large family.

Wondferful Week at the Beach

Guest: Reece and Sandy (Jacksonville, Texas)
Date of Stay: 08/22/10 Review Submitted: 09/06/10

My wife and I,along with our two dogs, just spent a wonderful week in this clean, cozy and comfortable beach house. Quintana Beach is only feet from the front door and I had a great time surf fishing and getting a tan. The house is a cool retreat from the sun and nothing can compare to watching the sun rise over the Gulf while drinking coffee on the front deck. The furnishing were well above average and the kitchen was very handy for snacks or full meals. Our dogs enjoyed chasing land crabs in the fenced enclosure below the house when they weren't on the beach chasing birds or swimming in the surf. Sandy and I have the means to vacation anywhere in the world but we are already planning our next trip to the Gulf and you can be certain we will return to this same beach home if it is available. The owners are honest, helpful and friendly. Should you decide to vacation or fish on the Gulf please skip the crowds and overpriced properties to the East of Quintana Beach and look into this hidden jewel. Your kids will thank you and if you are animal lovers like us, they will have as much fun as you do.

Wonderful Pet Friendly Beach House

Guest: Stewy (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest, USA)
Date of Stay: 08/15/10 Review Submitted: 08/27/10

My wife and I have stayed at this beach house for the last three years, each time in August. We travel about six hours with our dogs each of the last three years and will continue to do so. The beach is right in front of the house, within 50 yards. Although it is a public beach, it is usually clear for 200-300 yards to either side Monday-Friday. We loved to let our three labs out to run to the beach and play in the water and on the beach for an hour or two and then take them back up to the wonderful deck that looks out over the beach and ocean for the rest of the day. There we would read, listen to music or just watch all the cars and/or people and dogs come and go. We would spend at least five or six hours every day on the deck, sometimes more. The house is well furnished, very nice and just a perfect place to rest and relax . DirecTV is available, if so desired, so it is a complete vacation home spot. Freeport is only five minutes away for groceries or other needs. Lake Jackson, which is a little larger city, is only fifteen minutes, for more restaurant choices. Anyone who likes the beach for a vacation would enjoy this house and location.

My family stayed here recently (May 2010) and it was terrific. The house is very clean, comfortable and nicely furnished. Location is great - right on the water, and a pond behind the house where our kids enjoyed catching some crabs. It's an easy 1.5 hour drive from Katy. Owner is very nice to work with and promptly returned our deposit. No complaints whatsoever, we will be going back.

If you want a place that is removed from the hustle and bustle of city activity, this is the place. Although a public beach, the location of this property is private and a stone's throw to the water. The bottom half of the home is enclosed with lattice and provides the most wonderful breeze no matter what the temp...almost seems like you have overhead fans or A/C. This is a good retreat to pull yourself back together after fighting the stress of work, traffic, and daily obligations. Long stretches of beach to take your coffee and your dog for morning walks...loved it!!!!

Once again our stay was excellent. In addition to our dogs, our 12 and 13 year old grandkids joined in the festivities. They loved the house and the beach. The fishing was not great due to the murky/muddy water. The heavy rains we experienced in May had the Brazos rocking and rolling and brought the trees and driftwood right along with it. Hopefully it will clear up by the time we come back the end of September. We still had a wonderful time and look forward to our return trip.

AWESOME! Since 1970 we have spent 2-3 weeks a year vacationing in Port Aransas and the lower Texas Gulf coast but we have found a new haven. It was the most relaxing and romantic 9 days we have had and we are ready for our next trip. Added advantage was the home is pet friendly and we were able to bring our dogs. A perfect home away from home.

What a great house! This was a great place for a family vacation. We especially appreciate all the extra work you went to for us after the storm. Everything was great.

Thank you for sharing your peaceful getaway! We had a wonderful time and a little less worrisome thanks to the baby friendly environment. We would love to come back and will definitely recommend it to friends and family.

We had the time of our lives here at Castella's Castaway Beach! May it always be peaceful, calm, and a cozy piece of paradise along this stretch of the breezy Gulf Coast. Thanks so much for everything. Good people!

The best memorial day weekend I have had in years. The home was very confortable and the beach was outstanding. The stars at night from the hot tub were beyond words. I will rent for a week next year.
