This large and gracious home is one of a kind: large enough to comfortably accommodate an extended family, family reunion, or retreats and small conferences with 8 bedrooms, den with sleep sofa, and 8 baths. It is a beautiful property with a private beach, breathtaking views, gracious rooms, and lots of amenities. We have decided to make Omena House available to share with other families for special get togethers. A number of summer weeks are still available.

Located in the charming village of Omena, “the bend at the first knuckle of the little finger” of Michigan’s Leelanau peninsula between Northport and Suttons Bay, this spacious and well appointed house is situated directly overlooking Omena and Grand Traverse Bays, with a private beach in a lilac-secluded setting. Enjoy wonderful days filled with sun, swimming, boating, beachcombing for Petoskey stones, and spending quality time with your family and friends. From the house you will experience shimmering sunrises over the water and woods each morning and sublime evenings with the sunset reflecting off the bay. At night you can count stars and see the Milky Way.

Within easy reach are the attractions that define the very best “up north” experience: Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, charter fishing, excellent wineries and craft breweries, bounteous local foods, historical and cultural amenities including Interlochen Center for the Arts, amazing natural and human history, including the new tribal museum at Peshabestown, and several historic light houses and museums.

You can walk to the quaint village of Omena and the Leelanau Cellars Winery and Tasting Room, gallery, general store, post office, restaurant, and park with play equipment and wide sandy beach. The setting offers a sense of seclusion screened with trees and a vista onto protected conservancy woodlands and Omena Bay.

Constructed of stone and cedar clapboard, this expansive home has bright indoor spaces with large Anderson Windows offering unobstructed views of the bay and conservancy lands. The home’s interior has been architect-updated with comfortable furnishings, carpets, and fresh paint. It features a convenient laundry room off the main kitchen. The large living room offers a perfect place to relax with two game tables, a piano, music, books and games for all ages.

The dining room faces the bay with tall window walls on three sides, and seats up to 20. The large kitchen provides ample space for all the family to come together and create gourmet meals for all your guests. It is fully equipped to allow a caterer to serve special occasions as well. The large adjoining deck includes a convenient gas grill, built in seating, and is built around an sheltering old maple tree. There is a large glassed-in sun porch with white wicker furniture, paddle fans and a fabulous vista overlooking Omena Bay.

With eight bedrooms, a den with sleep sofa, and eight baths, it sleeps up to 21 people comfortably, perfect for a large or extended family. All the bedrooms are spacious with ample closets, and feature new pillowtop mattresses. The first floor has six bedrooms and a den with lovely views of the bay or woods. The second floor has a large and dramatic suite perfect to retreat from the bustle of activities downstairs and features a two compartment bath, Jacuzzi tub and dramatic window wall looking out at the treetops. There is an efficient galley kitchen, unique crows nest den with balcony, private study, and large sitting room with dvd/tv, all overlooking Omena Bay. The master bedroom is unusually spacious with ample closets, queen and single beds. The large second bedroom has a queen and two twin beds.

The beach opens onto beautiful Omena Bay. The sandy cove of Omena Bay is inviting, with calm protected waters, for swimming. In the evening enjoy the colors of the sunset and gather around a beach fire (there is a fire ring on the beach.) Or, if you prefer, walk down the road to the lovely nautical themed restaurant, and enjoy a gourmet dinner outdoors watching the sun set and the moon rise.

The fantastic “up north” experience does not end with summer. Enjoy spectacular foliage, hiking, biking, and winery tours while making this beautiful house your home base at off season rates. Also close to cross country and downhill skiing.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

The owners are Dale Manty and Elizabeth Tuckermanty. Dale grew up in Michigan and has brought the family “up north” for vacations every year since he left. Chirstmas vacations were filled with cross country skiing and winter fun and summers were filled with berry picking, hiking and swimming. Dale has family in the Upper Peninsula and down state as well. Omena House has been a perfect family reunion spot. Since acquiring Omena House in 2003 they are eager for other families to enjoy this very special house.

Why the Owner Chose Omena

We chose to buy our vacation home in Omena because, we love the Grand Traverse Bay area and the “Up-North” experiences it brings us. We love floating in the beautiful lake water; canoeing quiet streams, sailing on the open bay, harvesting the fruit and vegetable bounty either from U-Pick farms or farmers’ markets. This beautiful area needs to be shared with other families looking for time to be together. We felt this is a welcoming place and should be shared.

The Unique Benefits of this House

When we are up in Omena we love to relax on the beach, walk to the “Knot-Just-A-Bar” restaurant, visit the wineries and even just drive around beautiful Leelanau peninsula. Often summer mornings we load up our pails and go to U-Pick farms and pick strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. The afternoon is taken freezing whole berries and making freezer jam to take home and bring the summer back all year long. We go to farmers’ markets and gather the best in local food and cook together as a family. We love driving around the lakes edge and going through the beautiful rural landscape inland from Omena. Most of all, we enjoy being together and playing games with our daughters and their husbands. We have been known to have a bonfire and s’more roasting on New Year’s Eve.
