Perception of Solitude

We rented this cabin for a week of vacation with our parents, daughter, and nephew. This cabin has the potential to be a perfect setting for a family vacation, with the swingset, fire ring, and lake front setting, yet we left disappointed and do not plan to return. The biggest complaint we have with our stay is that the owners were always present: gardening, swimming, boating, and having their own friends and family visit and use the same space at all hours of the day and evening. There is nothing in the property description that indicates that the facilities are shared. While we didn’t expect to be “alone” on a Northwoods lake (with cabins built so close), we expected to have the rented space to ourselves. We felt that the owner’s presence interrupted our personal family time, conversations, playtime, and ability to relax. On a number of occasions we retreated inside the cabin to get away from them or their numerous guests! For some this might not be a problem, but for us, it was. We think the owners are personable and wish to be good hosts, so we felt awkward in raising this issue with them; in hindsight, we should have done so on day one. Our recommendation: The owners should change the rental listing to state that these are shared facilities. It isn’t enough to say that they “have a house on the property”. In addition, the owners should tell renters when they expect to have other visitors. Besides family they also had a business meeting right where we were trying to relax and get away from it all. At no point did they inform us that any of these people would be on the property during the day. It isn’t fair to the renter to have others sharing their space: unlike a bed & breakfast, we expected to be alone. Other notes: the lake itself is a busy slice of Northwoods with jet skis, water skiers, and pontoon boats. There isn’t a “beach” per se: the shallow waters have a sandy bottom, but it is not a walk out beach. It isn't the place for a toddler to run in and out of the water as the grasses/plants were quite tall and bank was steep. It's good for older kids. The cabin was fine. It wasn’t the cleanest ever, but we’ve stayed in much worse. It was a little odd that electrical wires were running open along the walls, no doubt due to the difficulty in upgrading these old cabins. The DVD player was missing. All in all, an okay place, if you're okay with the owners presence.

We loved our cabin and the grounds here at "Northwick". The play equipment was well used. We found the cabin to be tastefully and well equipped. Thank you to the Southwicks for their kind hospitality!

Our favorite adventures were our pontoon ride and tour, fishing off the dock, biking around the lake, swimming to the raft, kayaking around the lake, and seeing and hearing the bald eagle.

As time gets closer to return to this delightful cabin on Lost Lake, I want to add my comments to the Guestbook. My family & I stayed here 2 years ago and we loved it so much, we are returning for another week. The area is quiet and the lake is just a few steps out the front door. The owners are interesting and very helpful. They know the area so they can suggest places to eat, shop and go for activities in the area. I mainly like to sit by (or in!) the lake, read and enjoy the ambience.

Quiet, quaint cabin just steps from the lake. Clean and functional kitchen, comfortable beds, great yard for playing. Lake provided us with lots of fun swimming, tubing, and fishing. Two golf courses within 5 minutes of the cabin. We had a great stay and are booked to go back this summer.

Have spent a week here for the last two summers and plan to go again this year. Lovely cabin close to the water.Nice deck for watching the stars at night and an occasional eagle flying bye. Some boat traffic otherwise relatively quiet. Beautiful spot.
