Location: St. Remy de Provence, Provence, France, Europe (20 Min from Avignon/Arles. 45 min to Marseille Airport)

Accommodations:  Townhouse, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

Delightful modern Provençal townhouse in small gated development, built in the style and set within the grounds of a Belle Epoque villa, only three minutes’ leisurely walk into the heart of Saint-Rémy-de-Provençe.

With a small private terrace, shaded from the heat of a summer’s day, looking onto the landscaped communal garden beyond, this comprehensively furnished house offers a wonderfully convenient base for the whole of western Provence.

The house is regularly visited by the owners and their guests, and is therefore fitted and furnished to a standard providing all visitors with a home from home atmosphere. The owners place great emphasis on comfort, so particular features are the quality of the beds, the bed linen, fluffy towels and bath robes, and plenty of hot water.

The whole of the top floor is given over to the master suite, with super-king sized bed, en-suite bathroom, and a sitting area as well as a south facing enclosed terrace, equipped with comfortable chairs, looking over ancient rooftops to the jagged line of the Chaine des Alpilles beyond – perfect for watching the sun go down.

The second bedroom on the first floor has a king-size bed, with adjoining shower room and separate WC. Also on the first floor is the study, with a large selection of books, and some CD’s for the music centre.

The ground floor provides sitting room (with log burning fire!), flowing into the dining area and open plan, fully equipped, kitchen, with laundry room off. There is satellite TV/DVD and internet broadband/Wi-Fi access. Just bring your own laptop if you wish.

Guests have the use of a dedicated and secure car parking space within the grounds, accessed by electrically operated gates.

The house would be perfectly suited to two couples, given the private facilities on each floor. There is an English speaking concierge service to prepare the property for guests’ arrival and deal with any queries [or problems] that may arise during your stay.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence really encapsulates everything Provence has to offer. It is a small, unspoiled town, its boulevards, fountains and shaded squares brimming with colour and life, and with every interest catered for in its compact, historic core, whether cultural, gastronomic or just watching the world go by.

There are many restaurants, brasseries and cafés, catering to all tastes and budgets, but if guests wish to prepare their own meals, there is a typically Provençal range of fresh food to satisfy the most discerning palate, both from the local shops and twice weekly food markets (Wednesday & Saturday), as well as a choice of at least eight boulangeries within easy walking distance.

Whilst Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a working town, at the heart of a thriving fruit and vegetable growing area, many of its specialist shops and galleries offer very stylish shopping, reflecting the influence of both resident and visiting clientele. The town is wonderfully atmospheric, especially on market days, and during the various festivities held throughout the year.

Wine is widely produced locally, and the best of the red wines, holding the coveted Les Baux de Provence appellation, can truly hold their own against many of the more illustrious names elsewhere in France. Locally produced olive oil, with its own appellation, is held in even higher regard.

On the edge of town, nestling immediately beneath the crags of Les Alpilles, lie the ruins of the Roman town of Glanum, but it is for its association with Vincent Van Gogh that St Rémy is justly famous; in the year he spent being cared for at St Paul-de-Mausole, on the outskirts of town, he was captivated by the light and colours of the area, and many of the pictures from this short period of prolific output are amongst his most recognized and celebrated works.

There is a Van Gogh trail leading into the heart of the town from the hospital, signposting the locations of various pictures.

Les Alpilles dominate the landscape locally, and the ten minute journey through the hills to Les Baux rewards the traveller with a breathtaking vista across the plain, to the Carmargue and Mediterranean beyond.

Both Avignon and Arles are less than half an hour’s comfortable drive from St Remy, whilst Aix-en-Provence is less than an hour away. The sea at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is about an hour’s drive through the Carmargue, and the villages perchés of the Luberon make a memorable daytrip from St Rémy.
