The Yellow House, nicely set in the cove with superb ocean views.
Location: Tors Cove, Newfoundland, Canada (45 Minutes from St John's International Airport)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 4-5)
Keywords: Newfoundland rental house, Newfoundland rental cottage, Newfoundland rental villa
The Yellow House is a thoughtfully renovated 1850’s salt box house quietly situated on the southern shore of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula - recently voted THE BEST COASTAL DESTINATION IN THE WORLD by National Geographic Traveler Magazine. Although it feels a world away, it is just 45 minutes from St John's airport and has wireless high speed internet.
The house is in the settlement of Tors Cove (population 325 when everyone is at home) and has stunning views of the ocean and rocky shoreline. It is comfortably furnished for up to five people - either three individuals or two couples with a child or another adult. The bright blue front door opens directly on to the East Coast Hiking Trail – one of Newfoundland’s many hidden gems.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms - a master bedroom with queen size bed and ocean views and a second bedroom with double bed and views over the settlement. There is a full bathroom upstairs including shower. Downstairs there is a spacious and comfortable sitting room including a secluded nook with a sofa bed (for one) wireless internet connection and wide screen TV and DVD. The sitting room opens out on to a deck with views over the ocean and cove. The kitchen is amazingly well equipped with every appliance you could imagine neatly stowed in a pantry. (If you don't want to cook, St John's is stuffed with excellent cafes, bars and restaurants.) There is a dining area to one side of the kitchen and a downstairs powder room.
The house is electrically heated and has a wood stove with wood provided for you. In warm weather, you can sit on the deck on the outdoor furniture and watch sea birds and fishermen through the telescope.

Lovely detached, fully equipped house with lots of nice touches - house is used occasionally by the owners so you feel that they are genuinely creating a home-from-home experience. Plus the delightful Mary lives opposite and provides helpful advice and a lovely welcome. We had amazing weather and views for our 3 night stay. But even if you were less lucky with the weather, this house is in a great location for trips to St John's or down around the peninsula or just to relax. If you are touring Nfld, we also recommend Seaside Suites at Woody Point, Elizabeth J Cottages at Bonavista, and River Tides B&B at Norris Arm.

We absolutely loved our week in Newfoundland, in large part because of the Yellow House where we stayed the entire week. It's a lovely home with plenty of room for 5. It's modernized, with all the amenities of home (including wifi that worked wonderfully for us all week -- with 4 laptops going at the same time)! We loved the atmosphere of Tors Cove. Mary helped us feel right at home. She came by several times to make sure we were doing okay, and was a wealth of knowledge regarding the area. We really enjoyed getting to know her. Finding the house is a bit of a challenge at first. Our suggestion is that when you drive down 10 from St. Johns, look for the sign to the Five Island Art Gallery -- turn left onto the road pointing to the Gallery. You'll see the Gallery on the left as you drive down the hill (and is worth a stop at some point during your stay), keep going just a few hundred feet and you'll see the Yellow House on your left -- the first yellow house you come to. There's a 2-story Green house on the right immediately before you see the Yellow House. This is important because there are more than one yellow houses in Tors Cove. The views from the house are beautiful -- some of the most picturesque that we saw during our entire time on the Irish Loop. Definitely take the hike down the East Coast Trail (start up near the church on the hill -- go down the hill to the red/white house and keep on the gravel road until it comes to an actual dirt trail -- hike down the trail a kilometer or so, and you'll come to a gorgeous view of the coast. Absolutely breathtaking.) If we ever have the opportunity to return to the Avalon Coast, we will want to stay at the Yellow House again. It made our trip relaxing and fully enjoyable.

We had a wonderful time. Mary was a great greeter and we found the whole experience quite relaxing. It was exactly what we were looking for!! We have added the Yellow House to our list of places to recommend to others. We found that the loft-like upstairs and the unevenness of the floor gave the property added character and made you appreciate that under the surface this was a house that probably has thousands of stories to tell!!!

The house is lovely. Clean, charming, comfortable furniture, great rugs, an exceedingly well-equipped kitchen (every small appliance you could think of) and all with an amazing view of the sea and the islands. The cove itself surpasses all it's neighbours - hills on each side, but hills and valleys within the cove as well - houses perched on many different levels, and a white church towering over all. Grocery shopping is available on the highway from St. Johns, and there are great walking trails along the sea. This place is a winner.

Our vacation was truly a memorable one, and the main focal point of the Newfoundland vacation experience was our stay at the Yellow House in Tors Cove. We found it to be cozy, homey, fully stocked and equipped, and very tastefully furnished and decorated. Please convey our sincerest regards to Mary O’Driscoll who welcomed us as family, and made our stay in the Yellow House very singular. She gave us a taste and flavor for the area, the people and culture as no tour guide ever could.

We had an absolutely fabulous time in the Yellow House, and are already planning a return trip. My wife in particular liked the book selection, and the nearby East Coast Trail is fantastic, as was the Irish Loop. The property was spotless, and the web site does not do the property justice. The owner's agent was very helpful and cooperative.
