Saltbox architecture features lofty cedar-clad ceilings in the living areas

Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: House
One of the first homes built on the jetty, Salt Grass Cottage has stood the test of time, tide and more than a few gale force winds. Backing onto and focused upon the wide-open beauty of the Wildlife Refuge, the cottage connects to Little Beach, the less visited and much more sheltered harbor beach, via a short and easily followed game trail.
Little Beach was named and has long been a favorite of the young and not-so-young in our family due to its "friendlier" location (just out the back door, much less wind and rarely anyone else there), better beach-combing, and tranquil estuary-like vistas. There's still the roar of the ocean, waves break onto the beach and seagulls cry overhead...but it usually belongs only to you. Few others have such easy access!
Need more adventure? The rocks of the jetty and the pounding ocean surf are an easy 10-15 minute walk away on rarely used paved roads or bring your bikes and cycle over for more exercise and faster access! If nature's not your thing...why come to the beach?? Just kidding! There's plenty of restaurants, shops, and fun ways to spend money in town and of course the Quinault Beach Casino is ready and waiting to help lighten your pockets, too.
However you fill your time, Salt Grass Cottage will welcome you back at the end of the day with a cozy fire in the stove, a well-stocked kitchen and ultra-comfortable beds and bedding. Open the blinds to take in the gazillion stars on a clear night, the window just a crack for the roar of the ocean, the clang of the channel buoy or a distant fog horn. All the makings of a perfect night's rest...so you can wake refreshed, ready to do it all again! ***PLEASE NOTE: As of Dec 2011 and until further notice, the woodstove is out of commission and cannot be used but the electric heat keeps the cottage nice and toasty!

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
Hi!
I'm Kellie, and my husband Carlos and I are second generation owners/stewards of Salt Grass Cottage. We purchased it from my parents when time, tide and grown kids dictated they move closer to family and medical facilities. I say stewards because that's exactly how we see it...we're simply keepers of the home itself, of the dream-come-true, of the surrounding natural beauty and the treasure of Little Beach.
When forced to work rather than vacation, I sell and develop real estate in Seattle but welcome every opportunity that comes along to leave the hustle and bustle of the city and head for the coast. Carlos works with at-risk teens at the Washington Youth Academy, a high-stress, long-hour, never-know-what-to-expect kind of job that has him running for the peace and tranquility of the cottage every chance he gets. We began renting our ocean home for financial reasons, namely to help pay for it in a slow economy. We continue to rent it because the stories of how it's touched others lives enrich our own.
Why the Owner Chose Ocean Shores
Salt Grass Cottage has been a part of my life since I first stood on tiptoes on the very highest knoll with my two younger brothers and my extremely excited parents. Stretching as tall as we could, we all tried to envision what kind of view there would be from a main floor, maybe even a second story...it was the start of a dream come true for my parents and now for my husband and myself and the many guests who have shared in the cottage's magic.
There's something about water that just says: "Relax, forget your worries for just a while. Renew, re-connect, rest." That's why we love the ocean. That's why we sleep better here, why everything tastes better here, why we wait to the very last minute to leave here.
The Unique Benefits of this House
One look out the windows and you get it. There's nothing there, nothing but salt grass, falcons, hawks, deer, racoons, sparrows, swallows, eagles. Nothing but game trails heading for the beach, drift logs to climb on or lean back against. Nothing but the sound of the waves, the wind, the fog horn. We love Salt Grass Cottage because it's surrounded by nothing, and nothing works for us!!

We were having the tile taken up in the lower level of our home, and decided to run away to the beach for a couple of days to escape the noise and dust. We looked on the VRBO site and luckily come upon the perfect beach get away cottage. Everything was exactly as pictured...better actually, and dealing with Kellie was a pleasure. The cottage is cozy and comfortable, and was a welcome respite from the gale force winds, and torrential downpour we experienced in the bitter month of January. We enjoyed reading about the history of the home ,and about the loving hands that built it. Also, enjoyed reading all the journal entries of the many who have been in and out it's doors. As I wrote in the journal, it is almost if the walls really could talk. We are making return plans for the summer. Thank you for sharing your gift!

What a WONDERFUL place on the beach!! We were so pleased with the cottage, and the location was perfect. We took a long walk on the beach with the dogs and truly enjoyed just relaxing and hanging out. We had breakfast and coffee one morning at Cafe Amici where there was delicious food and great, friendly service. When we arrived, the cottage was clean, warmed up for us and we felt at home right away. There were plenty of things to keep us busy and the kitchen was very well stocked with supplies and utensils (i.e. se weren't searching around for a can opener or extra forks), which was nice. The beds and linens were very comfortable and cozy, the place was beautifully decorated, and there were plenty of games and magazines around for us to enjoy. Kellie was extremely easy to work with and very quick to respond to emails. She is very personable and we felt like she and her family were truly "welcoming" us to their cottage. Thank you again for your hospitality, for not charging crazy fees for silly things, and for making your family home a place we could enjoy as well! I would definitely recommend Salt Grass Cottage to friends and family.

Loved!!! My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend with 2 other couples here. Perfect place to rest, relax and enjoy nature. Tons of deer, birds, and the private trail to the beach was a treat. Got to shake off stresses of everyday and just kick back, hang with friends and soak in the quiet beauty of the ocean this time of year. The kitchen is truly stocked, whatever you need is there. Even though it was sunny for us, the temp was down around 30-45 degrees. We stayed perfectly toasty though using only the wood stove, no electric heat needed. The beds are super comfy, everyone commented on how great they slept. Started planning our next visit before we started packing up to leave. Thanks so much!!

The title describes the trip and this house. My family is flung to the far corners of the earth and we came together to take my Grami -about to turn 90- back to the shore after an absence of over 20 years. We walked the beaches together and marveled that our only company was the deer and birds. The cottage really spoke to us all and everyone soon began referring to it as " home." The fabulous beds allowed my husband and I to nurse our jet lag from Japan, while my Grammi and Dad and stepmom fed deer and bird watched which they all do back home too! It was really nice. While we lucked out with many sunny days, when it rained, the natural light from the windows was really amazing. And the kitchen...Well it's capabilities we're such that I was able to bake and my husband made some fabulous fried oysters and crab legs from Lytles. Thanks for that tip Kellie! My little tiny Grami threw down at that feast! :-). We even made it up to Lake Quinault and walked in the rainforest amongst the giants as a tribute to my grandfather. We know he would have loved this place to rest your head and the beautiful location as well. We are already talking of a return trip. Thanks to Kellie for all the e-mail traffic...Customer service with a personal touch such that my Grami talks of her as if she knows her. Truly a serendipitous trip.

This charming cottage has the character and comfort of a well loved haven. We enjoyed the owner's family history, really comfy beds, a thoughtfully supplied kitchen, ability to retreat to a nearly private beach, bringing our pets along and the kind and helpful communications with Kellie.

I cannot say enough good about the time we had here! This place was so comfortable --the beds were to die for, well stocked kitchen, atmosphere (candles, etc.). We all loved everything about the house-how it had been built with love over time and it showed. Especially great was the communication during the rental process. My grandaughter did not want to leave and I told her we would come back --she wants next week!

There was a goup of 6 of us girls that stayed in the cottage for my birthday weekend girls getaway. This was the perfect place to stay! The fire stove was amazing during a wild ocean storm. The home is beautiful, the area was beautiful, and you can't beat waking up to sunshine, a rainbow, and a mama and baby deer right outside the back deck. The bedding was super soft and cozy, so much so that you didnt want to get out of bed! lol We will definitely remember the cottage and we're already thinking of a stay next year! Thank you to the family!!!!! We stayed during Nov. 2010.

A three-day weekend at Salt Grass Cottage was just what the doctor ordered for my 57th birthday! My friends and I all loved the house, the path to the beach, the decks, the deer! The house is furnished in such a comfortable, yet modern, easy to care for style. I felt at home immediately, especially in the kitchen! My friends and I are avid cooks and we were in there most of the weekend, and there really wasn't anything that wasn't provided for us, as far as supplies go. You are lucky to own such a treasure. Even though we had 75 mph winds and rain on Saturday night, we were all safe and secure and snuggly warm with the great wood stove. Thank you Kellie and Carlos for sharing your wonderful home.

This is exactly what a vacation rental should be. The location is excellent -- walking distance to a beach, short drive or longer walk to the main beach, quiet with an unbelievable number of deer passing through the property each day. The cottage was in great shape and really nicely furnished -- you felt like you were staying in a home, rather than a hotel or an IKEA showroom. The kitchen was well-stocked and easy to use, very important since most Ocean Shores restaurants are, well, lacking. Most important for us, though, is that it is pet friendly. Our dog had a blast running on the beach, splashing in the water, and barking at all the deer. Highly recommended if you're going to Ocean Shores.

Our family had a WONDERFUL stay at Salt Grass Cottage! It is a charming and comfortable get away. The short walk to the beach was fun for our kids and pup as well. It is nice to find a vacation rental that accepts dogs with open arms, and even sets out a dog dish for your pup! The owners take such pride in their cottage and you can really feel the love that has been shared there for many years. This cottage is unique and stylish, yet still has a handmade flair that is very much like the homes many of us grew up in, thus very welcoming. We will be back for sure!
