Salt Grass Cottage...the Best of the Beach!
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
One of the first homes built on the jetty, Salt Grass Cottage has stood the test of time, tide and more than a few gale force winds. Backing onto and focused upon the wide-open beauty of the Wildlife Refuge, the cottage connects to Little Beach, the less visited and much more sheltered harbor beach, via a short and easily followed game trail.
Little Beach was named and has long been a favorite of the young and not-so-young in our family due to its 'friendlier' location (just out the back door, much less wind and rarely anyone else there), better beach-combing, and tranquil estuary-like vistas. There's still the roar of the ocean, waves break onto the beach and seagulls cry overhead...but it usually belongs only to you. Few others have such easy access!
Need more adventure? The rocks of the jetty and the pounding ocean surf are an easy 10-15 minute walk away on rarely used paved roads or bring your bikes and cycle over for more exercise and faster access! If nature's not your thing...why come to the beach?? Just kidding! There's plenty of restaurants, shops, and fun ways to spend money in town and of course the Quinault Beach Casino is ready and waiting to help lighten your pockets, too.
However you fill your time, Salt Grass Cottage will welcome you back at the end of the day with a cozy fire in the stove, a well-stocked kitchen and ultra-comfortable beds and bedding. Open the blinds to take in the gazillion stars on a clear night, the window just a crack for the roar of the ocean, the clang of the channel buoy or a distant fog horn. All the makings of a perfect night's rest...so you can wake refreshed, ready to do it all again!

What a wonderful, clean and well stocked cottage. And in the perfect location! Private and quiet, but loaded with things to do. The kids (and parents) really enjoyed the private trail to the beach, beachcombing and the short walk to the jetty was a major plus! The kids discovered all kinds of sea life there that really made for great memories. The kitchen has everything, so when we came back for meals, it was easy and convenient. Definitely coming back next year!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

4 girls and 3 dogs stayed at Salt Grass Cottage from 2/17-19 and we all agreed it was not nearly long enough. The house is great, perfect for our group. We slept really well in the comfy beds, cooked great meals in the well stocked kitchen, stayed cozy with the fireplace in the living room, and enjoyed nice walks with all the dogs to the beach and back. This is mentioned in other reviews, but the kitchen has any spice you might want and more! I took a chance and didn't pack any because of those reviews, and found the smoked paprika, coriander, and cumin I needed for some fish tacos there! The only complaint I had was my 13 year old greyhound couldn't walk up the open-backed stairs outside, but she doesn't do stairs well to begin with, so we just carried her. The other dogs had no problems. We also really enjoyed reading the story of how the cabin came to be! What a great place to have and keep in the family! Thanks to Kellie and her family for opening the space up and letting others enjoy it. We hope to come back some day! And hopefully make it a longer trip!!!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Found the Salt Grass Cottage to be as described & more! Many extras in the kitchen including spices, herbs, great pots & pans! Even though it stormed most of the weekend we felt cozy & safe & enoyed the wood stove. We read, played cards & slept! What a retreat! With 2 couples it was really a bonus to have a bath downstairs & 1 upstairs!! Thank you Kellie!! It was great!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

I found this place online. You do not always get exactly what is in the pictures but I have to say you do on this place. We found out it was built by hand in the 70's. That is really neat that it has stayed in the family and is rented for other people to enjoy. We loved the privacy and quiet. We fed the deer and birds (they have supplies in the garage). I really enjoyed that they had soaps, shampoos, etc from Trader Joes. I love that store and you know they are good for you and your family. A well seasoned kitchen or rather they had a bigger selection of seasonings than I do at home. Very responsive host. No complaints at all. Would recommend if you like peace and quiet like me.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed at this cottage the end of August. It was perfect weather. I would highly recommend this place. It is clean, modern, and very well stocked. All room have a queen bed and they are amazingly comfortable. The kitchen has everything you will need. There are games and puzzles for adults and children. Tons of windows and a huge porch with a table and chairs. Tons of privacy. A short beautiful walk to the beach. You won't be disappointed if you choose to visit this cottage.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Quiet, comfortable, very family friendly and the dogs just loved the location also. The beach was practically deserted everyday and just added to the feeling of getting away from it all. We'll be back!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We are two couples who travel frequently together to bird in different locations. This home is a wonderful base for exploring all sorts of places around Grays Harbor for the migrating spring birds. We lucked out on the weather except for one day when it poured, but we went to the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, a really great place! The shorebird festival is small, but well organized. This home is great for cooking and the supplies work on the "Law of the West", if you use something up replace it for the next visitors. The home is warm and cozy on those damp days, solidly built, clean and very user friendly with wifi. I would highly recommend a stay in this home with "nothing" around it, not on the main drag and even great yard birds. Kellie is wonderful to work with and this home is a real treat.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, sightseeing.

This was just what the doctor ordered. The house was extremely clean and comfortable, and well stocked. The photos really don't tell the whole story of how great this place is. The deer and birds are everywhere. In fact, most of the time, the only sounds we heard were of the birds and the ocean in the distance. We're looking forward to coming back!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We recently stayed at the Salt Grass Cottage to celebrate my mother-in-laws 60th birthday. It was WONDERFUL! Great open floor plan for cooking, playing games and relaxing. All three beds were super comfortable. The views are nice (grassy open area), but you can't see the water. It's a short stroll to the beach. If you're looking for a quick get-a-way (only 2.5 to 3 hours from Seattle) I highly recommend this rental!!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: Hi! I'm Kellie, and my husband Carlos and I are second generation owners/stewards of Salt Grass Cottage. We purchased it from my parents when time, tide and grown kids dictated they move closer to family and medical facilities. I say stewards because that's exactly how we see it...we're simply keepers of the home itself, of the dream-come-true, of the surrounding natural beauty and the treasure of Little Beach. When forced to work rather than vacation, I sell and develop real estate in Seattle but welcome every opportunity that comes along to leave the hustle and bustle of the city and head for the coast. Carlos is a fitness coach at NWCrossFit in Seattle, a job that demands a lot both mentally and physically so a few days of R&R at the beach are always welcome. We both run to the peace and tranquility of the cottage every chance we get! We began renting our ocean home for financial reasons, namely to help pay for it in a slow economy. We continue to rent it because the stories of how it's touched others lives enrich our own.
Why the Owner Chose Ocean Shores:
Salt Grass Cottage has been a part of my life since I first stood on tiptoes on the very highest knoll with my two younger brothers and my extremely excited parents. Stretching as tall as we could, we all tried to envision what kind of view there would be from a main floor, maybe even a second story...it was the start of a dream come true for my parents and now for my husband and myself and the many guests who have shared in the cottage's magic.
There's something about water that just says: 'Relax, forget your worries for just a while. Renew, re-connect, rest.' That's why we love the ocean. That's why we sleep better here, why everything tastes better here, why we wait to the very last minute to leave here.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
One look out the windows and you get it. There's nothing there, nothing but salt grass, falcons, hawks, deer, racoons, sparrows, swallows, eagles. Nothing but game trails heading for the beach, drift logs to climb on or lean back against. Nothing but the sound of the waves, the wind, the fog horn. We love Salt Grass Cottage because it's surrounded by nothing, and nothing works for us!!
