Some of the most amazing views you'll ever experience from this hilltop contemporary perched above Burnt Coat Harbor on Swan's Island. This custom 4 story home has 3 levels of decks on the water side to enjoy views as far as the eye can see beyond the harbor to the open ocean. Words cannot describe the beauty of this area and the unique setting of this house. There is a right of way to the shore for swimming and boating and the house comes with a mooring in the harbor if you wish. Come experience this island getaway and hike the numerous island trails or explore Fine Sand Beach or just sit and eat Lobster at one of the local sites. Great Biking on the island the ferry ride is only 35 minutes from Bass Harbor. Southwest Harbor is just a few miles away from the Ferry terminal with grocery stores and restaurants and Acadia National Park's headquarters and entrance would be about 1/2 hour drive from the mainland side of the terminal for great day trips.
The VIEW- : Sitting atop a secluded and very private height of land, 'Ardmore'( a name taken from the Irish/Gaelic( high hill ) was built, and recently completed, by the owner 3 years ago. From 3 of the 4 floors you have a spectacular, panoramic, 270 degree view of the open Atlantic and the many islands that lie along Swans Island's shores. There are 3 large, expansive wrap around decks with plenty of outdoor chairs and tables to sit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the smells of the salty air and the forests of Spruce.
The HOME: The owner and one very skilled builder/carpenter took 3 years to carefully construct this 4 story, aesthetically pleasing home. The floors are tile and oak, the walls and ceilings are plaster, the trim work, cabinets and shelves are all of wild Maine Cherry all custom crafted on site. The fireplace built of locally gathered granite is 4 sided, center placed and 55 feet tall. The appliances are all top of the line. The building has a state of the art radiant heating system, very high quality doors and windows and for the handy man a large and well designed workshop. The 4 bathrooms all have tiled shower stalls and floors. The master bedroom and the 1st floor bedroom have bathrooms en suite. It is a very bright and comfortable home with beautiful views from almost every window.

What a beautiful home! Completely custom built as described but what we realized after a day is that this house sits at the highest peak on the island. The ocean breeze was soothing and the songs from the birds mesmerizing as the 3rd floor deck is literally in the tree tops. People who work in Bass Harbor believe there is nothing to do on this island, we found that not to be true. This environment is not for everyone in that there are no roller coasters or shopping districts. With four adults and six kids, we found that the kids adored running and jumping on the rocks in front of the home, building campfires and listening to audio (CD) books on the amazing sound system that is wired throughout every level of this home. The adults were able to relax and rejuvenate on the 2nd floor deck and still keep kids under watchful eyes. The local residents were very welcoming! We purchased lobster from the fishermen's coop, where we received a fantastic lesson on the molting process of lobsters. A large lobster cooking pot and propane cooker are available in the house and we quickly cooked 11 large lobsters. When we could not locate Fine Sand Beach, a breathtaking undisturbed beach down an enchanted wooded pathway, a local resident that we asked directions from, drove us their. The little Carrying Place Market was a daily highlight as an ice cream run in the evenings. The lighthouse and wild flowers are not to be missed. This location works well as an artist retreat or family reunion. With 10 people total, we never felt on top of each other. Riding bicycles in this terrain is for those of ironman constitution. It is not the speeding traffic, but the amount of hills. Local residents told us that biking clubs from Vermont ride the island because of the challenging terrain. You do need sweatshirts, jackets and long pants in the evening hours as the max temp during the day was 60-70 F. This home does have radiant floor heat, which is a treat if you never have experienced it before. Fully stocked wood shed for wood burning stoves and fire place also available if you prefer that form of warmth. Home was clean and beautifully prepared for our arrival. Owner lives on island an did touch base with us to see if we needed anything. Any wine that you may enjoy sipping from the decks must be purchased before arriving on the island. Fantastic, restful experience for adults. Great imaginative outdoor experience for kids!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
