Owner's Profile

Owner Description

I have owned this house for over twenty years and at one time it was my full-time residence. Consequently, it has a fully stocked kitchen with all essential equipment, many children's games and toys, and is furnished for large family, multi-generational gatherings, of which we had many. Unfortunately, when all the kids and cousins got older, it became more difficult for them to gather here during the summer. We enjoyed having multiple cooks in the kitchen at once while visiting with people on the dining porch or in the living great room, keeping an eye on the children in the hot tub, and enjoying the expansive views. I hope you will avail yourself of a similar opportunity to gather here with family or friends and develop life-long memories too.

Why the Owner Chose Orcas

Owning a home on Orcas Island is like becoming a young camper again, but with all the luxuries of private bedrooms, bathrooms, jacuzzi tubs and gourmet cooking!

The Unique Benefits of this Estate

I particularly enjoy the long walks along the quiet country roads, the utter quiet and darkness at night, the wildlife in constant movement in the sky and bay, the changing face of the garden, cooking wonderful meals and enjoying them on the deck, and the magical island of Orcas with its excellent restaurants, stores and talented people and the hiking and biking trails in the park.

Family Celebration on Orcas

Guest: Mickey (Sausalito, CA)
Date of Stay: 07/09/11 Review Submitted: 08/08/11

Highest recommendation for staying in this wonderful home! Our family of 12 spent the most incredible week on this property celebrating my mother's 80th birthday. The home, location, gardens and nature of unsurpassed beauty exceeded all expectations. Situated on a beautiful, private bay with a magnificent front row seat for viewing golden eagles and passing ferries, the home provides comfortable gathering spaces and relaxing reading/napping nooks. The kitchen/dining area provides ample space for several people sharing meal preparation! The property has been very well maintained. Our group of adults and four teenagers could not have been happier!

Four-generation reunion

Guest: Hope and Sandy (Carmel, CA)
Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 08/07/11

We had four generations, ranging in age from 91 to 9 months; and everyone absolutely loved it. We have rented many nice houses; this is exceptional. Watching the ferries go by in the distance and river otters and resident bald eagle, braving the cool waters of the inlet, hiking the property and surrounding area...It all was good. The kids loved the huge play area and loft. The house was in immaculate condition when we arrived and works very well. The kitchen is large enough that many can help there; and the view from the kitchen and dining room (and almost every other room) is spectacular. The living room and the bedrooms in the main house all are large and comfortable. We definitely will return soon.

July Perfection!

Guest: Chris (Sylvania, Ohio, USA)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 07/20/10

Our family of nine, including 3 generations had an absolutely wonderful stay at this Orcas Island property. The home is our favorite of 3 VBO homes we have rented. The style, comfort and amenities provide a lovely and upscale, but relaxed atmosphere. The floor plan is great with fabulous views of the harbor, and the kitchen is terrific - large enough for many cooks in the kitchen. The gardens surrounding the home are fabulous! The harbor is beautiful and we enjoyed canoeing and kayaking. On the first day of the crabbing season, we dropped crab traps and harvested 7 large dungeness crabs for a feast! Eastsound is very charming and filled with great shops and restaurants, yet is small enough to not feel as commercial as Friday Harbour, although we enjoyed F. H. also. Loved Mt. Constitution and Moran State Park, Rosario (we highly recommend the 4:00 concert and talk by Christopher Peacock) and Roche Harbour on San Juan Island. We enjoyed dinner at the Kingfisher in West Sound and Madrona Bar and and Grill in Eastsound, and had fabulous gelato at Enzo's in Eastsound. Excellent scones, quiche and sandwiches at the Orcas Hotel cafe. The owner and caretaker were both very helpful and easy to work with, and we would highly recommend this beautiful home/property on Orcas Island. We would love to return again someday!

Orcas Island House

Guest: Dave (La Canada Flintridge, California)
Date of Stay: 07/03/10 Review Submitted: 07/19/10

Words can't adaquately describe the experience we enjoyed at this magnificent home. The house is located at the head of a small, almost private, bay near Orcas on Orcas Island. From the deck one can watch a seemingly endless parade of passing ferry boats and private yachts of every description. In the San Juans that's the primary view from virtually every home near the water. In this home, it's the secondary attraction. In this home the primary attraction is nature, of the wildlife variety. Deer, sea otters, harbor seals, visit, feed and frolic. Bird watching is amazing. Canarys, egrets, blue heron, hawks and sea gulls are all plentiful. But the star attraction is a pair of majestic bald eagles, the real land lords of the bay. They soar, swoop and glide then quickley snatch a meal on the fly as their talons are suddenly laden with the catch of the moment. Between fishing excursions they perch majestically in the tall trees surrounding the bay, a few of which are adjacent to the main deck of the house, literally 15 to 20 feet away. Awesome. Then there is the house, which under any other circumstance, would be the first mention in a review. It is magnificent in its own right. Perfectly situated, beautifully decorated and equipped. From the gourmet kitchen with every possible amenity to dining facilities to accomodate a group as large and varied as ours; fourteen. (7 children from 5 to 14 and 7 adults). The owners have thought of everything including a well stocked library to satellite TV. There is even a separate cottage stocked with art supplies, toys, games and costumes for the children. And a hot tub for the rest of us...complete with a resident (only around when you need him) care-taker to keep the tub warm and working at all times. We were there for 7 days, all of them sunny and warm, but would have had as much fun had it rained every day. The house is very private, situated on something in excess of 40 acres. Garden paths lead to the waters edge providing limitless fun with rock skipping contests, never boring tidal flat explorations and star-fish searches for the kids of all ages. It is the perfect place. You may think this review...or the reviewer, to be "over the top". Not so, but you'll have to experience this amazing retreat to judge it for yourself. One things is certain, we're going to do it again. Soon

Magical!

Guest: Lisa and David (Vancouver, BC)
Date of Stay: 05/21/10 Review Submitted: 06/11/10

This is a very very special place. We knew from the moment we arrived that we were in for a wonderful visit. The property and the amnenities far exceded our expectations! We went with two other families - 6 adults and 4 small children in total. We had tons of room to sprawl out! We could have easily had another small family or two join us! The house was beautifully kept, with many extras around every corner. The kitchen was a real treat to cook in. The view was spectacular from EVERY window. The grounds were lovely - with lots to explore. The kids had the time of their lives! We didn't need to pull out even one of the toys that we packed! There was so much to explore right there - in the house, the guest house, and of course the beach. They loved looking for crabs, creating art with all the supplies on site, reading the many kids books, playing dress-up, playing with the blocks, and just creating their own fun in a new and magical place. Once the kids were in bed (which was easy to do since they were so worn out from so much fun and fresh air), the adults enjoyed lengthy dinners and converstions on the lovely deck over lots of good wine and conversation. We loved every moment of our time here and can't wait to return! Truly, this place is a gem.
