Location: Bass Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Acadia, Maine, USA (15 Minutes to Bar Harbor)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms, 1.5+ Baths (Sleeps 4)
Enjoy outstanding views of the working harbor and watch harbor seals swim directly in front of your balcony. You have an unrestricted view of a small island out in the middle of the harbor which is home to an amazing pair of eagles. They give nightly performances of catching fish for their dinner and sit most of the day on the branches of the tallest tree on the island.
This will be our second season and we are very proud of the place. You will find a modern, well-appointed kitchen with Corian counters and birch hardwood floors throughout. The dining room will seat 8 comfortably and the living room has stunning views through a 10 foot sliding glass door and window wall. There is a covered balcony downstairs with wicker furniture and a gas grill.
Upstairs you will find three separate bedrooms with queen beds, closets, and nice cherry furniture. The upstairs bath is complete with shower and jacuzzi bathtub. The master bedroom has amazing views of not only the entire harbor, but you will see the outer islands and a view second to none of the mountains of Acadia National park. A private covered balcony also has wicker furniture off the master bedroom.
Our house is located at Up Harbor marina. My wife and I purchased this property in 1999. It was the home of Rich Brothers boat building. Over 150 wooden boats were built here over the years. The boat building is gone but the heritage remains in pictures and many stories from the old timers. This new 2 bed room house is our employee residence. We have a dock next door where we have a 2 person kayak and a small rowboat for your use. Also we have 15 dock slips for lease. These are summer residents that go usually out once a week.During your stay we will ask you to be our night watch person. Keeping an eye on the boats and docks. Our little marina is safe and very sheltered from the wind but on occasion a boat might try and escape. We will supply you with our phone number and ask that you call us with any of these type escapes or if you were to notice any problems with the docks. This is a simple but important job as we are inland while you are renting our home.We will compensate this employement at the end of your stay. A working vacation. There are 3 excellent restaurants that you can walk, bike, or row to on the harbor. If you kayak to the head of the harbor and pass under the small bridge you will find your self in the marsh and small streams that go all the way to Western Mountain. This is all Park land; very quiet and usually deserted. Bring your fishing rod!!
We hope you will come stay with us in this very quiet neighborhood. We are on the "Quietside" of the island where the pace is slower; the "front side" where Bar Harbor's T-shirt shops and bustling town is a easy 15 minute drive. Bass Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and other villages each have their own charm and unique finds.
Acadia National Park surrounds these towns and has myriad carriage paths for biking, trails for hiking, Sand Beach, Ocean Drive; you must see the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, the first spot on the east coast to see the sun in the States!
