Elk View
Elk View is an extraordinary property, a magnificent castle-like lodge on ten acres of woods and wide open pastures in the Jackson Hole enclave known as The Pines. The house is enchanting, and almost gothic in construction. Its potent lines, big windows, stone terraces and massive tree trunk supports echo the wilderness around it.
The interiors are a study in majestic proportions. A huge staircase ascends past mounted heads of elk and bighorn sheep. Smooth stone floors are scattered with carpets, burnished wood ceilings arch overhead, thick draperies and rich fabrics soften the carved Black Forest furniture and regal stone walls. Fireplaces are everywhere, and fine art and antiques are set into illuminated niches.
Just beyond the stone entry foyer and a fire-lit sitting room, is the two-story Great Room. Here soft, camel-colored leather couches face each other before a giant stone fireplace. Above, the peaked wood ceiling is art in itself, with marvelous wood arch braces, iron collar ties and an iron chandelier spired with candles. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the craggy Tetons outside. To one side is a bar room with a big billiards table, and stools crafted from fallen antlers; to the other is the expansive kitchen outfitted with granite countertops, a Viking six-burner stove, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The dining room is open to the kitchen, and has a round table that seats eight.
Elk View has four bedrooms and a bunk room. The gorgeous master bedroom, on the ground floor, is a true retreat. The king bed faces a wood-burning fireplace, and a stone archway leads to the bathroom, where a deep stone soaking tub is set into a windowed alcove. There are double sinks, a separate double shower and a roomy walk-in closet. The master bedroom also has its own glass-walled exercise room with Stairmaster and hand weights.
Upstairs, a second master bedroom has a king bed, walk-in closet, television, antique desk, and a luxurious bathroom of stone and wood, with dual vanities. A triptych of tall windows in the bedroom holds a broad view of wooded foothills. The other two guest rooms both have queen beds, writing desks, richly-appointed private baths and glorious, panoramic views. The bedrooms are full of light, and deeply comfortable.
Every bedroom is a study in rustic detail. Graceful artifacts of the Old West—snowshoes made of deer hide, antique Native American drums—are used in Elk View as art. A lamp might be made of antlers, a cupboard door of petrified wood. The five-bed bunk room is a fanciful, welcoming space, with tremendous opportunities for play. Peeled wood ladders ascend to a built-in top bunk and a loft, while the lower bunk can be closed off with curtains. The center of the room holds a television, skittles, and a long, polished shuffleboard table. The bunk room has its own bathroom with dual vanities and a shower.
From outside on the lawn, Elk View’s gabled roof, red-framed windows, beautiful stonework, and slim white aspens standing guard give it the look of an enchanted castle, its long, rambling silhouette following the path of the sun across the sky. Black-green forest cloaks the foothills, and the long pastures around Elk View are frequented by moose, bears, coyotes, eagles, and, of course, elk. The massive proportions of the great mountains, the wide sky, even Elk View’s picnic table built of split tree trunks only serve to heighten the fairy tale feeling. Stone terraces carved from the lawn hold various temptations: a raised stone hot tub, a firepit surrounded by rustic benches, a huge block of solid rock that makes a wonderful seat for three or even four.
Elk View’s wonderful location in The Pines gives it access to the best of Jackson Hole, and is ideal for families, or friends vacationing together. The Pines has a charming village center— with a market, a coffee shop, a flower shop, a fitness center, a bank and a dry cleaners. A smooth, paved street, safe for even the smallest bikers and pedestrians, heads toward the village, and a flat, easy bike—or ski—path unrolls toward Jackson, Wilson and beyond. The Pines’ 18-hole golf course becomes a cross-country ski course in winter, and its club house has a renowned restaurant. From Elk View’s three-car garage, it’s only a five minute drive to the ski village, Jackson Hole’s legendary slopes and the lively nightlife of Jackson; but it is just as rewarding to hop on a bike and pedal to the little market for hot dogs; and then come home to Elk View, spear the franks on a willow branch and roast them over the fire.
