Escape to "Rising Above" - a Majestic Mountain Home!
Year Purchased: 2000
The Unique Benefits at this House
Here in this place called Highlands, NC, your senses will be very well pleased with the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feelings that it has to offer. In just a day’s time, we like to start with a morning walk or jog downtown, followed by a stop at Buck's Coffee for the morning newspaper, a cup of coffee and a warm danish. Occasionally, we'll stop at the grocery or hardware store for a few essentials before heading home to grab a quick shower. Next thing you know, it's time to head back downtown for lunch at one of our favorites like Madison's Wine Bar, the new Mountain Fresh deli or Pescado's for a great Highlands Burrito. After a leisurely lunch, we visit some of the very special shops to browse for a book, a gift, a birdhouse, a quilt, some clothing, an antique, or even some artwork. Now, back to the house to rest briefly before we take Hannah, our chocolate lab, on an afternoon hike in the neighborhood. As we arrive back, it's fast approaching that important cocktail hour. With a refreshing drink in hand, we find a little time to read or listen to some soothing music as a prelude to heading out for dinner at one of Highland’s many fine dining choices. Another option we enjoy is preparing some scrumptious beef tenderloin on the grill from Dusty's Market with a few side items to complement from the Rosewood. Often, we cap the night off with a good movie from the Brick Oven Movie Store. As bedtime arrives, we call it a night so we can start over again tomorrow. We've even been known to partake in some rich culture by attending a show at the Highlands Playhouse or the Performing Arts Center or capturing some great art at The Bascom, Western North Carolina's finest art gallery only a mile from our home. Occasionally, we also throw into our day a scenic drive, a visit with friends, a canoe trip, a spa outing at the Old Edwards Inn or even a day trip to Asheville or the Cherokee Casino. However your day shapes up, just do one thing for us, MAKE IT FUN!
In just 5 minutes and a refreshing walk, you will find this lake a great place to picnic, fish or canoe.
Just down the hill, you'll discover one of Highlands' favorite and most scenic dining spots. The tasty dishes are spiced right, plus you must see the Figel's 1200 bottle hot sauce collection.
A must see and easily accessible waterfall that you can drive under then jump out for a memorable Kodak moment.
Welcome to Western NC's finest art center that just opened in 2009. Enter across the covered bridge and indulge yourself with native cultural pleasures.
Treat yourself to a massage, facial or manicure at this nationally acclaimed $50M resort and spa then sip on your favorite glass of vino at the outdoor Wine Bar.
Explore this eclectic, hip atmosphere and dine on some of Highand's finest international fare.
This is a great area for fishing, hiking and swimming in the midst of the Cullasaja Gorge area.
Take a stroll under this beautiful 75 foot waterfall plus it's very convenient to Hwy 64 / Highlands Rd.
Here you'll find one of the premier rafting, canoing and kayaking centers in the Southeast with access to seven of the best rivers.
This delightful, independently owned coffee house is favored by locals and visitors alike.
Just off Main St., you can hike a half mile or so to the top for a cool view of downtown Highlands. Don't forget your camera.
This moderate loop trail is 2 miles round trip and offers very spectacular views at 2100' above the valley floor. You will witness the highest sheer cliffs in the Eastern US.
Roll the dice and pull the arm at one of America's best casinos just up the road in Cherokee. Take a day trip and try your luck!
Walk in and you'll feel like you've stepped back in time at this small, gourmet grocery. Here you'll find the best meat in town!
Stop here for the best smoked ribs and BBQ in Highlands. Or if you're in the mood for a cold drink and some sports action, you'll be right at home.
Find a tasty casual tex mex lunch or dinner here at 4th St. on the Hill.
The best place in town if you're in the mood for carryout dinner and a show. My friend, Stuart, serves excellent pizza and salads plus rent a great movie right next door.
Best place in town to stop for a fresh deli sandwich, Highlands' best chili, great wine selection and the only coffee roaster in town. There are plenty other gourmet grocery items to fill the pantry.
One of the best restaurants in Highlands where your palate will be well pleased with New Orleans' influence. We've celebrated many special occasions here over the last 10 years.
A friendly place to socialize with friends from present or past, young or old! The first of it's kind in Highlands.
What a wonderful new BBQ restaurant in Highlands. We just put it to the test. Here you'll find large servings of food that are spiced right and tasty!
Owner's Map of Highlands
Have you ever experienced a moment that was so meaningful and memorable that it sparked a major movement in your life? That happened to me in July 1993 as I was returning to Atlanta from a trip to Asheville, NC with my girlfriend. Growing up, I often heard about this place called Highlands. Along our standard highway route, we noticed the sign for an exit heading to just that place. I thought now's our chance to take a detour and see for ourselves what it's all about. As we drove those 9 curvy and winding miles up the Franklin Rd. to Highlands, we experienced some of the most scenic views and waterfalls ever. The defining moment was the sight of Lake Sequoyah before our very eyes draped by the most beautiful mountains in the back drop. I said this is it... one day I will have a home I can call my own amongst this special beauty. I was blessed with that dream coming true in 2000. I hope you enjoy our special place just as much as we do!

"Rising Above" is an absolutely charming and beautifully decorated mountain home! Nestled in the woods with a mountain view in Highlands, "Rising Above" is near the enchanting Mirror Lake. The house is furnished with everything you need: either to remain in its cozy atmosphere or venture out some for wonderful dining, trail hiking, waterfall seeing, or shopping in downtown Highlands. Don't forget the new Bascom Arts Center and make sure to find out the activities offered including old-fashioned barn dances. I highly recommend this lovely mountain home!

My husband and I rented this cabin in February. The deck is large with comfortable patio furniture, a built in gas grill and a winter mountain view. We enjoyed the sunsets from the deck. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, cookware and nice appliances. The owner was very interested in creating a positive experience for us.

Our family recently enjoyed a week long vacation at "Rising Above" and had an excellent stay. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, glassware, etc. and the bedrooms were comfortable. We enjoyed dinners on the spacious deck and our 2 daughters enjoyed sleeping in their own "private hideaway" upstairs. Stuart was very helpful and answered all of our questions. We highly recommend "Rising Above".

The very comfortable accommodations fit our family well for the wedding weekend we attended in the area. The location was very convenient to town and some easy hikes to beautiful waterfalls. The contact with the owner was very timely and personable, and the kitchen well equipped. The ample parking with circle drive, granite counters, new appliances, air conditioner, and extra tower fan were very much appreciated, as was the surprising electric breadbox, complete with some necessities. The kids loved the cute loft, too! The discount by the owner made this a very good value for the price!

We recently celebrated my Mom's 85th by having all the girls together at Rising Above. It was the perfect setting for a relaxing, fun time to talk, sing, share, and laugh. The accomodations suited us well- great kitchen equipped with everything we needed, and plenty of sleeping quarters. A load of fresh firewood was waiting for us when we arrived, so we enjoyed a fire each night. Communication from the owner made it easy to arrange and get answers to my questions. We will visit again.DC

Rising Above is set near the very top of a mountain ridge overlooking the Calasuja Valley, north west of Highlands. The setting is lovely. The deck is a lovely place to watch the sunset. There is also a great view through the French glass doors that face this direction. The house has two queen beds/bedrooms. Plus three large twin beds upstairs which would sleep three more, plus a sleeper sofa and sleeper loveseat. Wonderful big fireplace. Lovely new gourmet kitchen with black granite counter tops, track lighting and light wood cabinets. Stuart is one of the most pleasant, gracious, trustworthy people I have ever dealt with. The place is surrounded by tall pines that sway in the breeze. This is a glorious place. I feel conflicted writing about it because if enough people find out about it, it may not be available for us again. I highly recommend this place to you, especially given the price. We looked at many comparable places that were $50-$75 more per night. We're very glad we rented here.
