Spacious Restored 1900 Schoolhouse with Sweeping Views
- Minimum stay:3 nights

- Wheel chair accessible:No
Retreat to the warmth, comfort, and special beauty of my 3-bedroom newly renovated schoolhouse. Large windows throughout the house admit great quantities of sunlight and glorious views. The ground floor is loft-style, each area opening onto the next; colors and textures create a soft yet pleasing sense of spaciousness. The large country kitchen is equipped with a center island for food preparation, a cozy breakfast nook, and a range of appliances to satisfy the needs of even the most discriminating food lovers.
The kitchen opens directly into the dining room, which has a rustic pine farmer's table that sits 8 comfortably, along with a handmade sideboard and an antique chest. Just beyond the dining room area is a charming living room with a new plasma TV and DVD player. Furnishings include one-of-a-kind antiques and contemporary pieces by some of the finest Vermont artisans. There is also a full bathroom with a large, tiled walk in shower.
The second floor has three bedrooms, two with skylights facing the Mount Mansfield range to the west. In the central hallway, there is a day bed with trundle; nearby a small loft providing a magical hideaway for children. There is also a study with a large work desk, wireless internet, and bookshelves. The master bedroom, with its own private balcony, is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or meditation. It also has a separate seating area, a hand-crafted armoire, and small gas stove to provide plenty of warmth on cold days. There is also a second full bathroom with a fine old claw-foot bathtub, as well as a separate laundry/linen room with a new washer and dryer.
In Winter, you can ski(cross-country and downhill), snowboard, snowshoe, or stay indoors to read, write and cozy up with a cup of hot chocolate; in Spring and Summer, you can swim, hike, bike, fish, then come home and enjoy a barbeque on the front deck; in Fall, you can explore the foliage, farmer's markets and the fine food at local restaurants in nearby towns. In short, the schoolhouse offers a glorious retreat from hectic city life.
The property is located on 4.5 acres in Wolcott with superb 360 degree views of farmlands, woodlands, meadows, and the Mount Mansfield range nearby. Wolcott (and the surrounding environs), has become a model for sustainable living, with its state-of-the-art organic farms, artisanal food products, and farmers' markets. The schoolhouse is less than an hour's drive of four superb skiing locations: Stowe, Burke, Smuggler's Notch, and Jay Peak. Stowe is the closest, and is definitely worth paying a visit.
Come to the schoolhouse once, and you will assuredly want to return.

I am sending you this note about the wonderful experience that we had at your Vermont home. It was an escape that was very much needed form our busy, stressful lives. There was nothing to think about but the beauty that surrounded us, the good company we had along with us and the peace that entered us while we stayed there. It was like we were home. Everything was amazing from your decor, to the full amenities in every room from the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and living room. This was truly a weekend that I was able to remember who I was and was blessed to be in such beauty and with the ones I love the most. Thank you for making it such a wonderful experience. And thanks for letting us bring our dog who enjoyed the trip and made our family complete during our stay.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

This was our first VRBO rental and we were certainly not disappointed. We loved the look of the schoolhouse on this website and were thrilled to discover the photos were accurate; the only thing not shown is the gorgeous panoramic view from the house. The house itself is a perfect mix of simplicity and comfort, with lots of character. We loved the open floor plan downstairs, and the cozier privacy of the master suite. The children's artwork on the walls made us feel right at home. It was just the right size for my husband and I, our two teen children, and a friend who stayed for two of the nights we were there. The kitchen is well equipped (note: no microwave) and we cooked several meals there during our ski week--even entertained another family around the dining room table. That said, we really enjoyed the property owner's restaurant suggestion in Hardwick (Claire's). The breakfast nook is sunny and cheerful, and the couch in the living room was inviting after a long day on the slopes (confession: in a perfect world, we'd love to warm our toes by a crackling fire in there, but alas, no fireplace in the schoolhouse...yet!). There's also a Bose iPod dock which we took advantage of. My kids never complained once about the 35± drive to/from Stowe, which speaks volumes! The owner was helpful and the caretaker checked in on us and answered our questions. Everyone loved the schoolhouse and we do hope to return for another sojourn soon!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway.

This is our second time staying in the schoolhouse and we'll likely stay again next year! The schoolhouse offers a unique opportunity to unplug from the day to day and focus on family. It was important for us, two working adults, with a teenage and tween daughters to reconnect. We skied at Smugglers Notch (great for families) and Sugarbush, forty minutes and an hour away respectively. Stowe is even closer at roughly 30 minutes. The schoolhouse itself is all it is described to be. It is very well put together, with a sophisticated touch of whimsy, great for kids and adults alike. Florence (the owner) and Russell (caretaker) are wonderful to work with; and I am grateful for Florence sharing her home with us.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

We stayed at the Vermont Schoolhouse in January 2013 for a family vacation, and LOVED our stay. This was a perfect "homebase" for 6 adults and an infant, and was conveniently located for several days of skiing and siteseeing. The schoolhouse itself is a charming, welcoming, clean and spacious home. The pictures on VRBO are accurate, but cannot do the house justice. In person it is even more impressive. The bedrooms were very good sizes and gave everyone their own privacy. The two full baths were very large, bright and clean. The main floor of the house is open and inviting. The schoolhouse has every amenity needed to truly make yourself at home. I would absolutely recommend this house to anyone looking for a conveniently located home near Stowe, with plenty of room for a family to relax. Close enough to the center of town and the mountain to enjoy activities, shopping, dining and skiing - but far enough away to relax and appreciate the quiet beauty of VT. Above all, the property owner and caretaker were helpful and a pleasure to work with. We were treated like welcome guests from our very first inquiries. We would definitely love to stay at the Vermont Schoolhouse again.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, people with disabilities, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

This home is everything the owner said it would be and MORE. The view was beautiful which could be enjoyed from anywhere inside the house or sitting on the porch or swinging on the old fashion swing on the maple tree. We had been traveling from Maine for 4 days and it was wonderful to unpack the luggage and settle in for another 4 days. It truly feels like a home and not a rental property and the owner has done a outstanding job making sure you have all the amenities necessary. The most amazing part of the stay was sitting on the porch at night and looking at the stars...I have never seen so many - with no artificial light to compete with, the night sky was breathtaking. The weather just started to turn cool (we are from the south) and found the heating system in the house to be more than adequate. Ladies bring bubble bath as the claw foot tub is meant for relaxing! This home is not far from Stowe or Burlington Airport with a lot of little towns in between togo exploring and shopping. Although we did not bring any children, it would be a great place for them as there is so much land for them to run around on ....or walk down the road and see the horses. You can't go wrong with this home!Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

If you dream of a restful, cosy, comfortable and so well equipped house, choose this wonderful schoolhouse! My familly, bigger such as smaller, had a trully great time in this house: we felt like at home, nothing was missing. Plus, the owner was very available for all questions before and during our stay. The person in charge of the well care of the house, that lives very close, was very kind and helpful. And the Vermont... GREAT! As you can read: I really recommend this rental!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Seems like we are always rushing around with no time to stop and reflect. But we did manage to relax at your wonderful property. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the house is so well-equipped, we hed everything we needed. I compliment you on your remodel design. The house is so full of light, with such great scenery, it really is a special place. The roomy downstairs shower is also a real treat. Russel was very helpful when we arrived and whenever we had a question - just once I think. Thanks so much for sharing your schoolhouse with us. I want to move there!Did you find this review helpful? Our family of four spent four idyllic days at this uniquely comfortable, serene home. Every detail has been carefully provided for - from the freshly laundered linens, to the well equipped country kitchen, and for those who need to remain wired - wifi. Most spectacular was the unobstructed view from every room of the bucolic landscape enveloping the schoolhouse. Our children were thrilled enough by the charm of the history of the house evident by the school bell, as they were with the hideaway children's loft, perfect for reading and shows. The home is located in a quiet area a short distance from Mt. Mansfield - our primary destination for skiing. But for those not interested in hitting the slopes there were several little towns nearby with well reviewed restaurants. Otherwise if you care to take advantage of the kitchen, there is a nearby co-op for fresh produce and meats. Needless to say our time expired way too quickly and we had to leave this wonderful retreat behind. But we plan to come back - we hope soon.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: I am a psychotherapist and writer living in New York City and, as much as I can, in Vermont, one of the most beautiful and compelling states in the U.S. I have spent time in Vermont since childhood and grown to love it more and more. The schoolhouse is my second Vermont home and is indeed my sanctuary; my hope, for the time you visit, is that it will be yours as well.
Why the Owner Chose Stowe:
From the Schoolhouse, you can see extraordinary 360 degrees of mountain views. The house itself is on a country road, which is well maintained all year long. Wolcott is just far enough from towns and cities to feel like real country, yet close enough to all enticements--skiing, swimming, hiking, good food, movies, etc.--to feel truly connected to one's surroundings. The house itself is near the crest of the hill, with large maple trees for shade and an expansive lawn and deck to spend summer days. My caretaker lives across the road, so the house is very well cared for. It is very beautiful, outside and in, spacious, and utterly comfortable.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Vermont is a 'unique benefit' in and of itself. Best of all, the house is a gem and provides the kind of retreat from the pressures of daily life that we all need to restore ourselves and bring equilibrium back into our lives. What's more, it is a haven for children, and when they feel like it, they can ring the original schoolbell on the second floor--a reminder of what its original purpose was. In fact, one of the reasons I love the house is because it is light and airy and suffused with the light energy of children.
