'Sea Meadow' is a charming, shingle-sided cottage located on Naskeag Point in Brooklin, Maine. The cottage is located only 75 feet from the water on four acres of land and is surrounded by grass and wildflower meadows. There are spectacular open views across Herrick and Blue Hill bays to Mount Desert Island. (A photograph of the view from our property appeared on page 69 in the September 2008 volume of 'Down East' magazine.) The non-working Blue Hill Bay lighthouse is directly off-shore from the property. A private staircase provides access to over 260 feet of deepwater shore frontage and a beach with granite boulders.

The living room/dining area walls are covered in antique barn board siding with a beamed ceiling. The den includes an entertainment center that is well-stocked with board games, television, and a DVD player. (Please note that TV reception is limited to two channels: ABC and Fox.) There is a large deck that faces the ocean with a dining table and plenty of outdoor furniture. The kitchen and bathroom have been completely remodeled. (The bathroom has a stall shower only.)

The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed. The two cozy additional bedrooms each have built-in bunk beds. (Due to the fact that the top bunks do not have any railings, guests should only use the lower bunks.)

Brooklin, Maine is located on the southeast tip of the Blue Hill Peninsula between Blue Hill Bay and Eggemoggin Reach. It is a beautiful, quiet village that boasts it is 'the boatbuilding capital of the world.' Author E.B. White and his wife Katharine made it their home. Brooklin is still home to many fine boat builders, lobstermen, and the headquarters of WoodenBoat Magazine. People come from around the world to attend boat building or sailing classes at the WoodenBoat School. Brooklin is, quite simply, a very special place.

"Once in a great while, when we're really fortunate in life, we get to experience a time and place of true perfection - a place in which we would not change one thing or wish for a single missing piece - a time of total peace and contentment. Our time at Sea Meadow was all of that, for both of us. From the moment we drove down the driveway and the cottage (plus the amazing view beyond it!) came into view, we were both pinching ourselves - hard to believe that such a magical place would be 'ours' for a week! You and Kent have overlooked nothing in providing for the comfort of your guests, and your attention to quality and detail is evident throughout the house. ... We were cozy and comfortable - we both agree, it felt like home. This spectacular stretch of coastline, with Blue Hill Lighthouse, all the islands, the lobstermen tending their traps out front, the friendliness of virtually everyone we met - all kept us smiling. Dinner at Arborvine on our final evening was delicious - a perfect close to the week. Our dream and hope is to return to Sea Meadow within the next year or two ...."

My family of four stayed in the cottage this August and we were overwhelmed by the beauty of it all. Inside, the cottage was perfectly decorated and had every amenity you could wish for. The owner was very gracious and responded quickly to every one of my inquiries from the time of the booking to the minute of our arrival. Outside, the privacy and the view were unmatched by any of the other properties we drove past on our way to and from Acadia for five days of our stay. Our only regret is that we did not make this a two-week vacation! Thank you, Mary Louise!

We arrived late at night at Sea Meadow Cottage and were instantly charmed and delighted by the tasteful decor and cleanliness. But the real beauty wasn't seen until the next morning when we were able to enjoy the spectacular views across the bay of beautiful Mount Desert Island and the story-book like Blue Hill Bay lighthouse, the sounds of the lobster boats going out for their daily catch and, of course the ever changing water and sky. Views we never tired of during our entire stay. Sea Meadows had everything we needed to make this the perfect home base: a well kitted out kitchen, interesting dvd-s, games and books for "at home" entertainment and access to a washer/dryer--- all greatly appreciated. The beds were comfortable and the storage space for luggage and clothes worked perfectly. The large living room/dining area windows that looked out over the bay provided spectacular viewing in all kinds of weather, as did the deck, complete with chaise lounges, chairs and tables. Visitors really need 2 weeks at Sea Meadow cottage. One week dedicated to rest and relaxation, with strolls to the end of the point (with a stop at historic Naskeag cemetery), a walk to the campus of WoodenBoat School, a quick trip to the village for "necessities" (a gift shop in Brooklin has an excellent selection of regional books), a Thursday visit to the summer Farmer's Market. Another week to spend exploring towns like Rockland (a must for art devotees of the Wyeth Family), trips to Acadia and Bar Island, visits to Deer Isle. It's no wonder that we want to return to "our" cottage for more Maine Adventure! Everyone who has seen our vacation pictures envies our good luck in finding such a perfect home and we have been recommending Sea Meadow to family and friends.

Fantastic Maine rental A friend and I stayed at this charmer in mid-August and loved the house and grounds. Among the highlights-owner bought a lobster pot per my request, lovely deck overlooking ocean and windows from inside with same view (at night amazing night sky views), steps leading down to beach (not suitable for swimming), book for guests with helpful info on local places/doings, secluded road so house extremely quiet, lovely, tasteful and comfortable furnishings with several couches, chairs, (even great books and good sound system), incredibly clean. The owner answered all questions and was supportive and friendly. House has master bedroom, and two bedrooms with bunkbeds, two rooms with sitting areas, dining area, well-appointed kitchen. Nearby are a renowned boat-building school, farmers' markets, hikes, beaches, parks, a local lobsterman (Randy w/ live lobster $4/lb), wonderful little towns like Ellsworth, Blue Hill, Castine, Brooksville, and a little further afield Schoodic Point (northern part of Acadia National Park). We even discovered a goat farm, Sunset Acres in Brooksville, that makes delicious cheeses like Camembert, wonderful crafts people throughout the area, and a local store, the Cave, with terrific breads and other gastronomic delights and gift items. Other local stores also had gift items and fresh picked blueberries. My friend and I wish to return next year, for sure, perhaps with another friend. We'd like to do more exploring. Well-worth the price. Highly recommended. We had a wonderful time. About 3 1/2 hours N. of Portland. Might be worth bringing bikes and a kayak.

Owner response: Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay at "Sea Meadow" and hope that you will return next year. I would like to respond to the comment that the beach is not suitable for swimming. The beach is a typical Maine beach with granite boulders. The water is very clean, it is also very cold. My two children love to go swimming at our beach while wearing wetsuits and beach shoes and play in the water for hours at a time.

My husband and I discovered the Blue Hill region 10 years ago and have been coming back every year since. The views, weather, Blue Hill Fair, fresh seafood, people, hiking trails, sailing and the ability to relax in a beautiful, comfortable cottage are just some of the reasons why our 9 year old son now appreciates why we keep returning. We found Sea Meadows in 2009 and spent our third visit there in August. Everything we need is right there, just as the listing describes - right down to the amazing views. The past two years we've actually had to rearrange our plans due to back to back Hurricanes. The owners were extremely accommodating in both instances - giving us ample warning of what to expect and reimbursing us when we weren't able to stay as planned. We discover something different every time we visit this region. The most recent discovery was at the Brooklin Inn where we were able to get a 'customized' dinner order of Chicken Tenders for our son - we're looking forward to the day when he will select one of the many wonderful choices offered on their menu! Sea Meadows is truly a beautiful place and we look forward to returning. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

My husband and I spent a week at Sea Meadow and enjoyed it immensely - the fog, rain, sunshine, lobster boats and even saw a deer in the meadow. My only regret was that we couldn't stay another week. The cottage met the description and more. Everything that we needed was there for us to use. The "backyard" and steps leading down to the shore were my favorite place to be whenever we were not out exploring the rest of the peninsula and beyond. Would return again to just sit and enjoy the shore and the view.

My family has deep roots in Blue Hill and knows the region well. ... [W]e could not have had a more PERFECT vacation. The weather was stupendous, the cottage exceeded all of our needs and expectations and the peacefulness that transcended all of us was priceless. "We really have enjoyed our stay at Sea Meadow Cottage. Your home here in Brooklin is a truly lovely place. Because we had absolutely pristine weather during our visit we were able to sit out on the deck each morning and evening and watch the constantly evolving color and light across Blue Hill Bay. We didn't feel as if we needed to travel very far because everything was perfect right here. Thank you so much for allowing us the privilege of sharing your beautiful seaside cottage!"

We were really blown away by this vacation property. The house was impeccably outfitted, and I ended up not using any of the pans, knives and spices that I had brought with me because they were already there! Our girls adored the bunk beds, just wish there was a true ladder instead of the step ladder we improvised with. We loved the privacy of the beach, and how thoughtful everything was - from the binoculars, puzzles, to sailing charts and skewers for s'mores. The decorating touches were elegantly maritime-themed. It's about 10 minutes from the cottage into town, and the public town beach is one mile down the road, an easy bike ride. The owner, rental agency and cleaning staff were all extremely helpful and quick to answer any questions we had. This is the place to go to get off the grid (there's no wifi and only two channels on the TV), and revel in the beauty of the gorgeous due east views. If our travels take us back to Brooklin again we will absolutely be back!

Owner response: Thank you! I am glad that your family enjoyed your vacation at "Sea Meadow." For those of you who may be considering a stay at the cottage, please note that the upper bunk beds do not have rails on them. For this reason, guests are asked to only use the lower bunks. Please keep this limitation in mind.

Location is spectacular! The setting took my breath away when we first stepped out of the car. The house itself was a wonderful surprise. Everything was clean and crisp and tastefully decorated. The owners did not skimp in any way. The appliances, pots and pans, linens, etc. were top notch. If you want to be in a beautiful place, with lovely views and the water right outside your back door then rent this house. We loved it. The only thing I wish they had that they didn't was kayaks, otherwise they had everything you could need.

About the owner: Our family loves to sail. This is a photo of our sailboat, 'Picaro,' on her maiden voyage.

              Why the Owner Chose Brooklin:
The natural beauty of 'down east' Maine is unparalleled. Our entire family fell in love with the area the first time that we vacationed here. The scenery is gorgeous: the blue of the ocean stretching out to the horizon; dark green firs and pines hugging the rocky shore; hundreds of off-shore islands; and white clapboard Victorian farmhouses. When this property came on the market, we were captivated by the spectacular open views of the Blue Hill Bay lighthouse set against the backdrop of the mountains on Mount Desert Island.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The proximity of the cottage to the water is wonderful. My favorite thing is to get up in the morning before the rest of the family. The house is quiet and I take a good book and my morning coffee out on the deck. I love looking out at the constantly changing color and pattern of the water and listening to the waves lapping against the shore.
