Farmview Cottage is located in the Cartoogechaye section of Macon County approximately five miles west of Franklin. The name Cartoogechaye is thought to be derived from the Cherokee word for cornbread. The Cherokee settled along the Cartoogechaye Creek and the many fertile bottom lands that are found in this area. There is still evidence today of their many settlements.
This rich fertile valley is still home to a number of small farms that have been operating for generations. While many of the active farms have gone there is an increasing interest in preserving these farm lands and making them productive again by growing agricultural products that appeal to the local market, such as herbs, spices, berries, and sheep and cattle.
The cottage is rather new with a wonderful view of the old historic Slagle farm. The view off the front porch faces the heart of the farm and the original home, still standing, which was built in the 1880s. The grounds are spacious and well maintained with lots of flowers, shrubs, and a small herb garden. The house is nicely decorated with some unique furnishings and a few indulgences, like a spacious master bedroom with a sunken bath tube.
The kitchen is roomy and light and so is the living room which overlooks a beautiful vista of the Cartoogechaye valley. The cottage has its charm and the owners have worked hard to preserve the warmth of hospitality to this lovely setting.
