We stayed at Hobbit House to start off our 25 years dreamed of Hawaii vacation, and what a way to start. Darlene and Bill are amazing, super friendly and informative. As for the Hobbit House, what you see is what you get! It is so relaxing and comfortable, and the views, I'm not sure there are words to discribe them! Although it is a bit of a drive from the airport, HH is in the perfect location as you are centrally located for most activities. If we ever make it back to Hawaii, we will definitely be in contact with Bill and Darlene, hoping to stay in their Whimsical Hobbit House:)

We’ve been to the Big Island several times but never had an experience as positive and serene as we had at the Hobbit House. Its off the grid in an idyllic spot that exemplifies Hawaii. It has a really large living area compared to everywhere else we have been and very clean. It was fun staying in touch with the natural world and how it all interacted with the solar cells and windmill. The outdoor area was manicured with grassy areas to sit and read on, and lovely trees blooming that supplied us with fruit. I knew as we traversed the road straight up to the Hobbit house that we were in for an incredible view. Sure enough the first day we were there we were so transfixed by the incredible view and surrounding area we forgot about the agenda and sat on the couch and let ourselves be mesmerized. The combination of Darlene and Bills craftsmanship and glass art work was such a treat. It was custom and fanciful and just added such a wonderful ambience to the stay. They were the most gracious hosts supplying all kinds of information about best locations for anything you could want to do. We recommend this location to anyone looking for a unique, inspired, totally relaxing vacation. Oh, and did I mention the stars in the night sky which can be viewed in almost total darkness.

We had the pleasure of staying at Hobbit House on our first trip to the Big Island, and our stay surpassed our expectations. Bill and Darlene are excellent hosts, full of knowledge and genuinely kind, fun, generous people. They manage to occupy the top half of the house while respecting your privacy and gladly help you with whatever you may need (suggestions, beach equipment, first-aid, etc.). Hobbit House is a whimsical, unique property that uses off-the-grid energy and is surrounded by lush, beautiful trees and Darlene's garden. It was such fun to pick grapefruit off the tree and forage for avocados. Also, the hosts have a macadamia nut processing business through which they offer the best macadamia nuts you have ever had in your life (don't miss out! Those other ones you've been eating all this time are nasty!). Don't be deterred by the distance up the hill to Hobbit House. Regular cars can make it and if you're patient, it's no problem navigating the road. After you see the stars at night and can hear only the roar of the ocean from below, you'll realize the trip was worth it. Thanks, Darlene and Bill! If you stay here, we highly recommend the black sand beach at Punaluu (minutes away), Volcanoes National Park, South Point, and the Punaluu Bake Shop in Naalehu (Fabulous malasadas, try the passionfruit). What a great vacation.

The property is well-maintained and the owners were very courteous, gracious hosts answering all inquiries and provided wonderful advice for our excursions. I would definitely recommend this property to others. The scenery is breathtaking, weather - outstanding! It is a very serene location, peaceful, spacious.

We spent a week at the Hobbit House and would say that it was our best week in our three week Hawaiian Adventure. The house is gorgeous and Bill and Darlene are incredible hosts with lots of information to offer. The property itself is full of so many interesting things; from the avocado trees that my husband helped Bill pick one morning to the unique system of wind and solar energy that fuels the house. You must try the mac nuts! The house is set in the hills and we could walk down the road to see horses, cows and the spectacular view of the coastline. Sitting in the huge bath and listening to the wind while looking down at the rest of the world was quite an experience. From the Hobbit House we went to the Green Sand Beach, the Black Sand beach ( where we saw many turtles resting in the sun), Kona, Mountain Thunder Coffee and stops in between. There is a great fish and chip shack just before you get to Captain Cook worth checking out. When we come back (and we will come back ) we would rent a 4x4 vehicle as there are some places that a heavier duty car can take you. However, we had a regular car which was just fine to see all the sights. If you are looking for a beautiful spot to stay on the island, where you can easily tour around to see the sights or opt to stay at home for a day to read on the beautiful bay window bed, then this is the spot for you. We have been home for almost a month and still talk about our week with Bill and Darlene. We will be back and have recommended that friends of ours look them up when they next go to the island. Mahalo for becoming such a great part of our honeymoon, Hobbit House!

We have traveled all over the world, and this is one of the most unique places we have ever stayed. Yes, it's lovely, clean, quiet, well-equipped, beautifully located - everything you would want in vacation accommodations - but what makes it truly unique is the home itself. The bathtub seems to float above the floor (a trick with mirrors). LED lights are strung in eucalyptus branches hung on the ceiling. There are no square corners anywhere. Everything's run on alternate energy. The garden is replete with fruit trees. It's a delight for the curious and creative. It's a rare thing to see someone's dream manifest, but that is exactly what this place is about. The dream belongs to Bill and Darlene who are wonderful hosts. They offered great information about nearby places to visit, where to buy our groceries, and alternate & interesting ways of getting to our destinations on old, little-used roads and paths. We had a delightful evening with them when they pulled out their telescope on a very clear night and we spent some time star-gazing. The moons of Jupiter were clear! My 11-yr-old son was taken with Bill and all his inventions which Bill patiently showed and explained. This is a place for intrepid travelers who are seeking to get off the beaten path and experience Hawaii in a way that goes well beyond the resort life.

If you love getting away from the crowds and prefer to relax in a tranquil atmosphere then the Hobbit House is just the place you seek. Everything was perfect for us and we stayed there 9 days. The house is beautifully designed and perched high on a hill overlooking South Point. We awoke every morning to the music of bird song. Since it is away from the road there was never a roar of traffic or any intrusion of people. Bill and Darlene were amazing hosts and even helped supply us with necessary items such as a flashlight so we could walk in a lava tube in the nearby Volcano National Park. They also provided valuable information about the local attractions. The Hobbit House is specially designed to function off the grid and we loved learning about the eco-friendly technology. This was one of the best vacations we have ever experienced.

We stayed with there for a few days on our honeymoon. We both enjoyed it very much and liked the owners a lot. If you like to read by the window, the place has the best window ceiling for that I ever saw (you can sleep there if you want). They are off-the-grid and generate their own ectricity through solar and wind. They owner can tell you all about that :)

My husband and I have stayed in many vacation rentals, and the Hobbit House is one of our all-time favorite destinations. We had the pleasure of staying with Darlene & Bill in August 2010, and still dream about our vacation there and hope to return on our next trip to Hawaii. We cooked many wonderful meals and found the kitchen to have everything we needed. The window seat in the living room was the perfect spot to curl up with a book and watch the clouds roll by. The beautiful bathroom is a bath-lover's dream -- a huge spa tub, surrounded by windows. The deck is great place to greet the morning with a cup of coffee and view of the coastline in the distance. Our guidebook had mentioned that the South Coast is windy, which is only really true at the "South Point" look-out -- not an issue at all at the Hobbit House, nor on the nearby beaches we explored, which were all enchanted and unique. (One was teeming with huge turtles; another was filled with green sand; yet another was close to an ancient Hawaiian sacred spot -- this is the real "hidden Hawaii"!) The rental is within easy driving distance to Volcanoes Park, as well as a beautiful monastery...not to mention a great bakery. You have the best of both worlds -- access to all the enchanted South Coast sights, but a feeling of true seclusion and being "away from it all." Ask Bill if you can sample some of his macadamia nuts...the best we have EVER tasted. Bill and Darlene were the most gracious hosts we have ever encountered in our "vrbo" travels. Not only are they warm and welcoming, (while also considerate of guests' privacy), they are happy to share their considerable knowledge of the area and the best places to explore. Highly recommended!
