Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

That would be me on the left...that other guy, on the right, is just a friend. I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where I own a hotel.

I also founded and preside an HIV/AIDS service organization there, Vallarta Confronts AIDS, that provides free testing, counseling, education, and outreach. We distribute free condoms, and pay salaries for some staffers at a local HIV clinic. The focus is on vulnerable and marginalized communities in the region.

I serve on the Executive Committee for Democrats Abroad Mexico, and publish the Mexico Democrats Journal/Newsletter. Democrats Abroad is a state party committee within the DNC.

Currently, I am spearheading a legislative effort to get Congressional authorization that will provide eligible seniors living in Mexico with the Medicare benefits they have paid for. This would be the first time Medicare has paid healthcare providers outside of the U.S. Mexico has an estimated 200,000 retired seniors who paid into Medicare during their working lives, but either have no access to benefits, or must travel back to the U.S. when sick. And since health care in Mexico costs only 35% of that in the U.S., Medicare will save substantially, as well.

I'm an economist by training (MA from Johns Hopkins SAIS), and a political animal by nature. A DC native, I grew up in a political world, and believe that through our work, we can improve people's lives. If we are blessed with the resources and ability to help, we have an obligation to do so.

Why the Owner Chose Washington

This is my personal residence in DC, which I use when in town for political work I am involved with. My other residence is Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where I own a hotel, and live most of the time. The condo is very convenient to National Airport, and also to Capitol Hill.
