Thank you so much for the amazing getaway retreat! Eric -- your hospitality was beyond reproach. The cottage was absolutely PERFECT. It was spotless, comfortable, inviting and so very peaceful. The property itself made it feel as if we were in our own little world -- secluded and beautiful. Sunsets were magnificent, relaxing in the chairs by the lake was sheer perfection. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in your little slice of heaven. We WILL be back soon!

Couldn't have asked for anything more!

Guest: Ohio travelers (Moreland Hills, OH)
Date of Stay: 05/11/12 Review Submitted: 05/15/12

We had a girl's weekend away coupled with my daughter's college graduation party this past weekend at this property. The photos don't do the property justice! The house was so cozy. We loved that the queen bed and the king size bed (which were unbelievably comfortable) were both in the huge upstairs room. It was like a real sleepover room! The kitchen had everything we needed. Everything was immaculate. Everything top quality. The yard was perfectly maintained and bird filled singing. Lots of chairs to sit out side and visit. Then across the street....amazing beauty. Parklike serenity. Loved the statues! Loved the comfortable chairs. Loved the fire pit with lots of wood for smores. Loved the lakeview & the bald eagles. Eric was so helpful setting up for our small graduation party. Moved everything we needed to the lakefront side. Really wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. Also appreciated his welcome narrative of the property's history and natural highlights. We didn't get into the town of Ashtabula because we didn't want to leave this beauty for one minute...and didn't want to leave when our stay was over. We intend to come back this Fall. Thanks again for everything & preserving this natural wonderland, Eric. I envy your reacquisition of this property. Wish it was mine! Congratulations on a job well done.

Owner response:Thank You for the kind words Jeanne, we'll look forward to seeing you again. We appreciate the way you cared for the house and cleaned up before departing. Eric & Julene

Winter Fun on lake Erie

Guest: Vic (Toledo)
Date of Stay: 02/10/12 Review Submitted: 02/29/12

My wife and I had a wonderful tim for a valentines day get away on February 10th. We got snow enough to cross country ski, and then took in a nearby winery on Saturday afternoon. Eric is a great host and checked in on us regularly to make sure we were comfortable and well informed of everything the are has to offer. This is a great place for either "the guys" or the significant other. We will likely be back this summer with our grandson to take in some of the many "kid" stuff in the area.

Regarding the Rooster

Guest: Christine
Date of Stay: 06/11/11 Review Submitted: 07/01/11

Thanks Christine for your kind comments. For all renters in the future, we are dialing down the Chicken flock as they are a lot of work and Roosters can be LOUD and mean, although the children have all thoroughly enjoyed them we are planning to be Chicken free in 2012. If any renters are browsing and really want the Chicken experience, I could probably borrow chickens for your stay and set the coop up with a few hens to entertain children but as a standard, they won't be part of the 2012 experience. Regarding 2011 Feedback: I will not be receiving a lot of Feedback this season as I booked the majority of the season to one renter so feedback comments for 2011 will be thin with a total of only 4 reservations on my calendar for the entire year.

The property is really nice and we had a great time staying there. The home is was clean and the property was well maintained. The view of the lake is incredible. We loved the chickens but grew tired of the rooster waking us up by about the third day. Overall, a great place to stay would definitely recommend it!

A Great Lake House!

Guest: Margaret (Cumberland, RI)
Date of Stay: 05/07/11 Review Submitted: 07/01/11

Half of my family lives in Rhode Island, and the other half in Minneapolis, so when we were planning a vacation, we tried to pick a waterfront location that was roughly midway between the two. Ashtabula fit the bill, and the Bluepike fit the bill. After being misdirected by our GPS to a house two towns away, we finally arrived on a Saturday night. The house is cozy, clean, and incredibly well-stocked -- the only thing we needed to bring was food. The lakefront lot, across the street from the house, is beautiful. The lakeshore itself was fun to explore. It was way too cold to swim or even wade, but our 2-year-old daughter loved throwing stones in the water. The chickens were a lot of fun, especially when Julene let them roam outside of their pen. We were a little nervous knowing that Eric and Julene would be by two times each day to tend to the chickens, because we're not the most gregarious people, but they were always very respectful of our space and treated the house as if it was ours during our week there. We were very grateful for that. Eric was very prompt in returning our security deposit. A few weeks later, he even mailed back my glasses, which I'd left but had fallen behind a bedpost, making them hard to find. Thanks again, Eric and Julene!

The Best Summer I've had in the USA

Guest: Cognac (UK)
Date of Stay: 04/04/11 Review Submitted: 02/29/12

I rented Eric and Julene's house for the whole summer of 2011, with the exception of a week in May and one in July. I can honestly say that my family and I had one of our very best summers in the USA. The house is situated on a wonderful plot of land where you are never too far from the lake, Ashtabula Harbor (a couple of great restaraunts and bars) and the numerous wineries. Across from the house is a secret garden where you can pitch your tent or start a fire while the sun sets over lake Erie. The property was comfortable and very functional and allowed me to develop my skills as a sailor at the near by boat club in Seabrook and foster my new hobbie of picking wild mushrooms. Eric has a wonderful selection of Giant Puff Balls on his property! Fishing is also great on the lake and you are close to numerous steelhead runs in the spring. Both Eric and Julene are great people who helped me get the best out of this often overlooked part of OH (unfortunately the chickens were given to a local farmer when I left in October - I believe they have visiting hours now:-0). I hope I am able to visit again soon! Mark from the UK.

Owner response:Thanks so much Mark. The rewards to owning a vacation house like the Bluepike come in the many wholly gratified and surprised guests we host that end up as friends and new fans of Ashtabula. The Boat Club Mark joined was Redbrook in Saybrook and now that I know he is still alive, I'll be picking some mushrooms myself next season.

Eric & Julene What a gem you have in the Bluepike Lake House & the lakefront property. We are just getting into a groove of being here & now it's time to leave....The view of the lake from "Eagle Point" as we liked to call it was spectacular. From the chickens to seeing eagles, it was all wonderful! And LMPF is adorable! Thanks for making your house available. We would love to come back! Barb & John This occupancy included two couples. The second couple wrote: Eric & Julene, Chickens were never a favorite of ours ---- until now! Thanks for them, the kitty cat and the magnificent property. We would love to return. We have a lot of covered bridges to see yet (we saw four). The Kitchen was wonderful. Everything we needed . Tom & Carole

We had a great weekend at this home-- everything, including the home, nicely set up bedroom, and the gorgeous lake property across the street was amazing, even though the weather was not always cooperative. The property is very quaint and homey, and we all had a wonderful time. Would highly recommend!

Owner response:Thank you very much for the feedback Ronak, I hope you come back to visit again sometime. The weather is usually better than what you experienced. Hope all is well for you and your friends, Eric

Beautiful house!

Guest: Lindsey (Pittsburgh)
Date of Stay: 09/11/10 Review Submitted: 10/01/10

My family of 5 (myself, my husband and our 13, 12 and 4 year old children) recently stayed at the Blue Pike. We found it to be a nice getaway at a good price. The house itself is 100% gorgeous and perfect and wonderful -- it really is the highlight of the property. The owners have thought of everything when it comes to the furnishings and amenities inside the house. The lake lot is also nice, with gorgeous views and lots of room to spread out. The owners were very nice and provided a lot of good tourist info about the area. If I were to make any suggestions, they would be to first, invest in cable/satellite. We really did miss having it and we were there during nice weather. I imagine for folks visiting during the winter or bad weather, the lack of that type of entertainment would be disappointing. Also, having the chickens on the property was a hassle for us. Not only are they noisy, but having the owners visit the property twice a day to care for the chickens isn't ideal for people who prefer privacy on their vacations. In addition, on our visit a stray cat was also a guest around the house, and for a family with a child who is uncomfortable around animals, the cat and chickens gave us more headaches than enjoyment. I understand that the owners really love animals, but for guests, it would probably be best to keep animals at the owners own home rather than at the lakehouse where the guests have to deal with them. Last, there were two things that we were a bit disappointed in. We were surprised by how very close the road is to the house, and how very noisy and busy that road is on the weekends -- we must have heard at least 100 motorcycles whizzing past per day on the weekend. Also, the path to the lake is downright treacherous. Had our youngest child been any smaller, I don't see any way that she would have been able to walk the path herself, and having to carry her would have been a real challenge for me or my husband because of how steep the path is. The private beach is amazing once you're down there, but the path down is bad and the thought of having to go back up is even worse. I would suggest improvement of the path ASAP! Overall we thought the place was very nice and enjoyed our time there. If we were to find out that the owners had taken the chickens to their own house and built a nice path to the beach, we would be back in an instant because, combined with the beautiful house, those improvements would make the place pretty much perfect!

Owner response:Lindsey, Thank you for the compliments on the house. For those considering staying with us the path to the lake is a healthy walk up and down. It spans 70ft of vertical drop in about 200ft of path. The path itself has rope railings to assist walking the steeper parts. If more guests complain about it I will consider improving it sooner than later. I find that it compliments the character of our property as do the Chickens which most guests enjoy. It gives a first hand flavor of traditional rural life and its situated in a beautiful lakefront setting. We do have TV and Internet. The TV is basic but available and I don't want to encourage my renters to experience more of what they know but more of what they don't know and the outdoor environment here is special and should be explored and enjoyed. The Motorcycle noise was the result of a local event called "Thunder on the strip" which was an annual motorcycle rally at Geneva On the Lake. Unfortunately our house is on a Lake Erie route and the cruising took place along the lake shore. The motorcycle traffic is not normally that strong. The cat will be neutered and given a home in our barn until we can find someone to adopt her. We didn't ask for her but shes a very gentle cat and she is not allowed in the house. Lindseys 4 year old daughter named her for us, she called her "Little Miss Pussyfoot". Lindseys oldest left some of the nicest comments we rec'd this year in our log book. I will post the excerpts from Zoe as I think they speak to contrasting tastes and expectations. Zoe writes: *Eric & Julene* you guys really made this homey "farm" outstanding. I was glad to talk to you about the chickens and throw the football with my Dad & Eric. Its always good to get away once in awhile and this is the perfect place to go, I LOVE the view from the lake lot. When I went down to the lake I touched a HUMONGOUS fish! We had a campfire, and went to Walnut Beach & got some really cool rocks. I hope we can come back next year, (and maybe we won't forget our fishing rods). Thanks so much for providing this lovely home for us. Signed "Zoe" With our property, be sure to speak directly to me if you have any questions and I will do my best to see that the property fits your interests and needs

wonderful place to stay

Guest: Mart (Cortland NY)
Date of Stay: 09/04/10 Review Submitted: 09/15/10

I told Eric in the guest book that I didn't want to say too many nice things about this place because I wanted to keep it a secret! It is a beautiful house, well appointed, very private and one of the most relaxing places I have ever stayed. We could have sat on the bluff all day. I tried to read there, but was too distracted by everything around me. We came on a day when there were gale force winds on Lake Erie which didn't disappoint us at all--the lake was beautiful in it's anger--and loud. The pounding surf reminded me of being at the ocean. The following days were sunny and calmer and we managed to do a little bit of bird watching. We saw an immature bald eagle fly in from over the water, carrying dinner in his talons and watch a whole flock of Common Mergansers feeding just off our spot for a long time. The house is comfortable, well stocked with the essential kitchen utensils and pots and pans, laundry facilities, games, movies, puzzles, wi-fi, comfy furniture. The owners have pretty much thought of everything. Flashlights, binoculars, first aid kits, etc. They also provide info on things to do and restaurants in the area that were very helpful. My only regret is that we didn't spend more time with the owners as we did enjoy chatting with them in the brief times that we saw them. We'll rectify that the next time we stay as we do plan on coming back again next year. Thank you Eric and Julene for providing us with a beautiful place to stay and a relaxing start to our trip out to Indianapolis. We definitely want to come back!

This was a gift for our parents 60th anniversary. Our whole family stayed here in this lovely home and we had a great time! The weather did not cooperate enough for us to swim, so we all plan to come again. The highlight were the chickens which their Great Grandson of 5 yrs. got the experience of learning that roosters are territorial. Also appreciated the history lesson and tour that Eric took us on. We saw this beautiful place through his eyes and learned how to search for treasure in the lake! Thanks for your hospitality! The .........Clan

Great House with Wonderful Ammenities

Guest: Georgette (Economy, Pa)
Date of Stay: 07/29/10 Review Submitted: 08/20/10

We had a wonderful 5-night stay, and the weather was great for our end-of-July vacation. During the weekend, we invited some extra family members to visit with us. On that Saturday, we did some jet-skiing off the lake front property. We launched the jetski from nearby Lake Shore Park. It was an easy 5 - 10 minute jetski ride from there to the property. After all the water play, we had a happy hour by the firepit, followed by steaks on the grill back at the house. We capped the day with an early evening swim and smores back at the campfire. Two of the youngest were thrilled to be eating eggs straight from the chickens on Sunday morning. We all enjoyed the extra outdoor space and even found ourselves playing a family game of baseball that Sunday afternoon. Eric and Julene went out of their way to make sure all was well during our stay. (Eric even pitched a tent for us on the lake front property - knowing we might have some extra family hanging around for the weekend.) And our 4-year-old fully utilized the four or five large Tonka trucks that "mysteriously" appeared in the backyard one morning. We took two of them to Walnut Beach, and he played with those for hours in the sand. Thanks, Eric & Julene, for a great stay! Sincerely, Ron, Georgette, and R.J.

we had the pleasure of staying at the lake house on this fourth of July weekend. Wat a wonderful get-away. Our sons who are 14 & 5 played cornhole, frisbee, played in the water, enjoyed evening fires and smores. (the littlest was especially tickled by the chickens). The property across the street is just amazing! It is a hidden treasure! Thank you for your hospitality and friendliness. We felt very welcome all weekend. :) Vandalia, Ohio

August 1, 2009, By the Morss's We have travelled many times to the Great Lakes; (camped or stayed in rental places)upon various of their shores; we have even done the "Circle Tour" of Lake Superior; but this stay here near Ashtabula Harbor has been in many ways the most endearing of our Great Lakes experiences. Mostly that is due to the generous hospitality of Eric and Julene Schwarz, whose enthusiasm for this place, its geology and its history is exceeded only by their friendliness. Our chance to view the spectacular Erie sunset with them and their three very charming grandchildren was among the high points of our visit. Every Great Lakes destination is enlivened by its own local color, but here the Combination of Ashtabula with it robust industrial history and sad present decay; the valleys of the Grand, Ashtabula, and Conneaut rivers with their many covered bridges and picturesque water settings; the expansive wine country with its dozens of exciting possibilities for tasting and socializing is both unique and pleasant. This small house that Eric and Julene have built is just about as comfortable per sq.ft. anyway as any place we have ever stayed. The upstairs in particular is one of the most comfortable and welcoming chambers that we've ever occupied and weve occupied them all over this continent and Europe. The property across the road is one of the most private and beautiful lakeshore settings on the Great Lakes. We never set foot there without sharply drawing our breaths and congratulating ourselves on our having reserved this little expanse of heaven for ourselves. Fundamentally we are readers and bathers, and that is what we did here - read and bathe. We devoured our books and we devoured the peaceful and vivid slate shoreline below the bluffs across the road. This was our first chance to swim off a slate shore, we reclined in the sun; we observed many Eagles; we read our books, and we swam in the warm sweet water of this coast. For all this we are most grateful, Mark and Betty Anne Morss, Columbus Ohio.

If anyone is looking for a wonderful "place in the country" (just a couple minutes from town) to enjoy a vacation, I would truly recommend this one. My favorite room was the back porch, but my son's family thought they had the best with the upstairs. The kitchen is beautifully equipped. The greatest part of this package is the many acres of beautiful Ohio that was ours to enjoy, from the lake up through the trees, from early morning lake walks through evening barbecues. We loved the wildlife, and the chickens. The hosts were terrific.

My family and I (husband, 2 boys, brother-in-law) were fortunate to have found this "gem on Lake Erie" just before an Ohio family reunion. We were comfortable sleeping and showering (the hot water was great) and even though it rained each day, we had fun at Geneva on the Lake and watching dvd's on the flat screen tv in the family room. Every detail was thought of, down to the comfy towels and sheets to the rocking chairs, local information books, coffee maker, and artwork. I would recommend this rental for families or couples, there is a lot to do, or just do nothing and relax enjoying the view.

This is a great location. The lake is a great spot to hunt for fossils. We found plenty. The sunsets are magnigicent. We stayed when the cottage was being built and the owners were wonderful. I recommend this place over many. I grew up on the Lake Michigan and this is the best cottage I've stayed at in a long time.

What a great place to spend some down time. The area is quiet without being remote. Ashtabula harbor is only a few miles down Lake road, where my wife and I did some shopping. Geneva-on-the-lake is only ten miles away and is a great time for all. But the real reason to go is the peace and quiet. One night we saw a fawn and her mother eating some grass as we made our way across the street to have a camp fire and watch the sunset. I never saw so many stars in all my life. The beautiful lake and clean accomodations will bring me and my wife back each summer. We were there this past summer and the patios weren't finished. However they look like there done in the picture on this site. Can't wait to go back this summer and watch the sunset again from the new porch! Let me know if I have to bring my rocking chair. Thanks again Schwarz's for a great time. Brian Hulbert San Diego, CA

this is a BEAUTIFUL spot---the owner's description is, if anything, too modest. The lake views are stunning in every season....and the wildlife (including the chickens), are ever so interesting to even the most casual observer. I highly recommend this place in any season !!!!!
