The beautiful Caribbean island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras offers some of the world's best SCUBA diving. The island is surrounded by the world's second largest coral reef, hugging most of the shore.
This provides calm, clear beaches for swimming and snorkeling, and many varieties of sea life. Roatan's many excellent dive operators assure convenient access. Roatan is not as touristy as many Caribbean islands, but you will find plenty of activities and things to see and learn about the island and Honduran culture.
Our location in Sandy Bay is on a beautiful white sandy beach and our private dock is there to launch your swimming and snorkeling a short distance to the vibrant coral reef; and it has a covered seating area where you can enjoy many hours of relaxing with a book, visiting friends, or enjoying the beautiful sunsets. For those times you don't want to cook, you can walk along the beach to one of the beach restaurants and bars or just to enjoy an ice cold drink.
Our beach home features sumptuous and beautifully appointed master suites that are furnished with king-size beds, A/C, and private en suite baths. The loft has twin beds, fans, and its own private bath. A large living area is open to a full kitchen and a breakfast bar that seats six.
The large covered deck includes an eating area, lounge chairs, and hammocks. Relax and enjoy your vacation knowing our private 24-hour security and full-time housekeeper are there for you.
Tina will not only keep the house clean but also if you wish cook one delicious meal / day for you. You are invited to taste coconuts from our own trees and other fruit from the garden when in season.Elmer, our gardener will pick them for you.

A month at the Malzer house was not enough. We loved the quiet retreat with the water only steps away. Tina is a sweetheart and quietly takes care of the house. We wished we had known the depth of her cooking abilities from the start. She now has a notebook of the meals she can cook for the guests. Be sure you try a dinner of her coconut shrimp or perhaps her homemade tortillas and refried beans. We also recommend next-door-neighbor Tex of Roatan Flyfishing if you want to fish the flats. His rate for a 4 or 5-hour trip is compararble to other charter fishing trips - which in Roatan doesn't mean inexpensive. The dock was our favorite place. It is a private dock, but in Honduras that doesn't mean totally private. We sometimes shared the dock with others who tied up there or a few of the neighbors who also have a key to the gate. That wasn't a problem at all, but at least you won't be left wondering "who are these people?". Snorkeling off the dock was so much fun. Don't miss all the starfish off the dock to the east. The bars and restaurants mentioned as being along the beach are no longer there. Anthony's Key is also fenced and no longer accessible along the beach. Iso and Otto were very responsive to our emails and Kevin, the property manager, dropped by often to see that all was well. Sandy Bay makes for a very secluded and quiet vacation. We hope to return and take others with us to the best vacation place ever.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We enjoyed our stay at the Malzer house with just a few exceptions. Most importantly were the King bed mattresses that are poor quality and not a single full king mattress. There are two "twin size" mattresses in each king bed frame. Not so cool for a couple. Also, it would be nice to remove a few trees to enhance the ocean view. It's too bad to block such a nice view with just too many trees. The dock was great ... enjoyed snorkeling right at the end of the dock. The staff were very nice and Tina was great ... she cooked dinner for us one evening. Anyone coming to the Malzer house for the first time better use Kevin to lead the way. There is no way to find the little dirt driveway unless you have been there before.Owner response: The twin beds have their mattress frame only on 3 sides- nothing in the middle so the mattresses meet without a gap. The beds are firmely connected with a strong system. We will be in our house in 2 weeks and will check the system may be it needs to be renewed. The advantage over one kingsize mattress is that both partners can sleep undisturbed. It is peacefull and pretty to watch the palm branches glitter and sway in the breeze, enjoy the shade of the Mango tree on the large porch, for most of our guests. The trees are also the best protection in bad weather which sometimes strikes. Twice a year the lower leaves of the Coconut trees are cut away to allow some view of the ocean. Unlimited view and the salty smell of the sea gives you your time on the dock right infront of the house.

My husband and my two adult children enjoyed nine days at this beautiful home in early December 2012. It was everything that it promised to be. We loved the house - it was comfortable and spacious. Each of the children had their own space - There were 2 large bedrooms with bathrooms attached and a loft area where my son slept. He had his own bathroom on the main floor. I can't tell you what a luxury it is to have a bathroom for each of your adult children! The kitchen was well equipped and we did most of our cooking there. We ventured out for several scuba diving adventures but were so comfortable and happy here that we were eager always to return. We snorkelled right off the dock - the reef and the famous "Spooky Channel" are right in front of the property. There is a long dock that goes right out into the Caribbean and we watched the sunsets from its balcony. The garden was beautiful, with birds and humming birds and there are four visiting cats that kept us company. We enjoyed relaxing on the generous verandah amidst mango and palm trees in the hammocks. Security was provided at nighttime and Tina, our hostess kept the house ship shape. She also treated us to a magnificent loaf of coconut bread. The only challenges were the confused roosters who woke us sometimes at 2:30 in the morning. We got used to it, but the first few nights found ear plugs helpful! Any questions or problems we had were dealt with promptly. Transportation was no problem, as buses go by just up the road every five minutes or so. And they are inexpensive - about 70 cents per person. Negotiate taxi fees before you climb in - they are usually about $1.50 per person depending on where you are headed. We bought our groceries in Coxen Hole right after we landed and enjoyed having our meals on the verandah. There is an excellent clinic at the Bahia Resort just down the road (a short bus trip) with an excellent doctor who dealt with a couple of medical concerns. We can't wait to go back!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

This house is the perfect place to spend your vacation and see Roatan from a local perspective. The caretakers and workers on the property go above and beyone to make sure your stay is enjoyable. The house is in clean condition and great for a family or group of friends. The best part is the dock that goes into the ocean. The view of the sunset is exactly what you imagine a vacation to be and the coral reef is rigth there to snorkle to.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We stumbled on the Malzers' beach villa by chance, as we were looking for a quiet place after having spent a week in the noise and hustle of Roatan's Westend. I loved the place because it is very airy with a huge classy ceiling fan, so if someone does not like aircon (like me) you do not necessarily need to switch it on. Great swimming straight from bed in the morning as the lovely clean sea is only a stone's throw away. When we discovered that Tina (the housekeeper) was a terrific cook, we decided to have most of our meals on the terrace. We took one of the the little pick-up buses to Coxenhole, where you can by fresh fish from a kind of cooperative every morning and a good selection of fresh fruit from the small "tiendas" or the super market. We would have liked to stay on, however all holidays come to an end. But given the occasion to come back to Central America, we would certainly love to spend another holiday at the Malzers' villa especially in the apartment on the first floor with the terrace.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

Just look at the photographs and read the description. When I do, the whole experience of staying at this magical place comes back to me with undiminished impact and pleasure. What you see on the web site is what you get once you are there, only more so—the sights, the sounds, the tastes, the aromas, the Caribbean „feel“. Incidentally, on the same trip I also stayed at an luxury Caribbean resort; the Malzers' place outclassed it in every respect.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

Have you ever dreamed of being at a Caribbean island with white sand, palm trees and a cool drink in your hand? Then Roatan is the perfect place for you! In the last ten years I´ve been several times at Malzer house and always had a perfect time. Although it takes a while travelling from Europe to this small island it’s worth it. Sea: Clear blue water and an amazing reef- we even saw dolphins at our last visit Entertainment: You can reach a couple of good restaurants by foot. If you want to party one or the other night you can easily reach the bigger villages, West End, Coxen Hole, by bus or taxi- there you can find bars, more restaurants, live music, shopping… it´s great fun there! House: nice and very clean, friendly and obliging staff, long private dock for hanging out in the days and watching wonderful sunsets in the evening, stars and moon at night enjoying the lovely breeze. Resumee: perfect holidays! I´ll be back soon!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

My wife and I have been going to Roatan since 2001 and have always stayed at the Malzer house 9at least 10 times). If you are looking for a perfect place to unwind, there is no better place than on the end of the Malzer dock watching a magnificent sunset over the carribean sea. This could easily be the subject of a Jimmy Buffet song. The house is wonderful but the staff, who we consider our island family, make the experience truly memorable. Tina, the housekeeper, keeps the home neat and clean but for the best experience you must have her cook for you. If you set the menu with her, you can give her some money for grocery shopping and she'll take care of getting everything necessary to serve mouth watering dishes. You will not be disappointed. Elmer, like his father before him (Pastor), is in charge of keeping the grounds in their constantly beautiful condition. He also keeps watch over the place while you enjoy your vacation. You truly have no worries staying at Malzer other than deciding what time to get up and what you want to do for the day! Everything else at the house is done for you. For those who want to be "on the go" for vacation, Malzer is located close to everything and Marty Wood and his bus can get you anywhere you want to go quickly and comfortably. However, from the end of the dock you are only 100 yards from a beautiful coral reef that will keep you occupied for days on end. As an attorney in Florida I deal with an inordinate amount of stress. 0n the first day back to Roatan and the Malzer home, I unwind and relax like nowhere else I've been; and that includes Hawaii, Bahamas, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and a host of other destinations. It's hard to be stressed in a hammock under a 35 foot mango tree while the sea breeze cools you down. Try the Malzer house and you'll be glad you did. You may even become repeat visitors like we are. It is truly paradise.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1996
About the owner: We Otto Malzer a geologist and Iso Malzer a physiotherapist fell in love with Roatan in 1994. We bought the lot and started to build. It was an adventure that time with building material not beeing available all times, We put a lot of attention to details and design and made sure that the house was engineered well, strong and with excellent material. In Summer 1996 it was finally finished!
Why the Owner Chose Sandy Bay:
This property offered everything we wanted to have on a tropical island. A beautiful beach, lovely coconut trees and plants. It is about 18 feet above sealevel, that means security, but still right at the beach. It offered places to plant fruit trees and it already had a big Mango tree and various others.
