Winter retreat

Guest: Kevin (Manassas)
Date of Stay: 02/12/10 Review Submitted: 08/25/10

It is like Grandma's house. Older furniture and fixings, but everything works. My wife and I have stayed there twice and plan to do so again this winter. The owner(s) are very responsive when we needed something addressed. For the price you are getting this place at, you cannot expect everything to be like a 5-star hotel. Keep looking at other houses this close to WISP and compare prices. If you want everything new and sparkling, this is not the place for you, if you want a place that is clean, comfortable, and a place to sleep for the night or so you will be here without breaking the bank, this is for you.

Very nice for the price

I just completed a stay at this home and had a great experience. If you're looking to get away from it all for a good price, this is the place. The owner was very accommodating and offered assistance throughout the experience. If you need to get back to civilization, it's a short drive away from Deep Creek Lake and Wisp, if you're a skiier. The description is very accurate. It really was like staying at Grandma's house without the Grandma. Thanks again for a great experience!

Just wanted to say my family and our dog had a fantastic time at this home. We fed the cows in the backyard, had a bonfire, and hiked alot. My wife and I really enjoyed Jay's Smokehouse Bar & Grill. We let the kids have the hot tub, but are figuring on an "adults only" return to the house. It is centrally located to skiing, hiking, and we even took the kids bowling at nearby Nemacolin resort. The owner was super helpful and friendly, and the house is very clean. They told us it would be like going to Grandma's, without Grandma. And it was!

Just okay

The house is nice enough, but not quite as described -- it has been renovated, but probably 20 years ago, and a few things are kind of cobbled together. Also, the owner warned us it was "dog-friendly", and indeed, it smelled heavily of dog. Likewise, the grill is actually a small bare patch surrounded by cinder blocks. Although we were willing to overlook all of these things, the owners' treatment of us after we stayed at the house has been very poor. Initially, the owners were very friendly and responsive, although their responsiveness decreased during our stay. There were some problems with the hot tub and electricity during our short stay, and the owners were not able to resolve this matter before we left. We asked for a partial refund as we did not get everything we paid for, including use of an amenity that lead us to rent the house in the first place. I have emailed the owners three times at an email address they used very recently and have received not a single reply. My call to them was not returned. In short, this house is fine for a weekend away if you don't mind it a bit rough around the edges. However, should you have a problem and need the owners' cooperation after your stay, you won't get a response.

Owner response:We're sorry that this renter found our house "rough around the edges", but when we talk to folks we tell them that it is like going to Grandma's house. It is not luxurious, and somewhat old-fashioned but we clearly state that in our ad, and it is also reflected in the price. However, we have heard from many people as to how much they enjoyed their stay there. We did respond during the renter's stay, but since they were only there the weekend, we could not get the hot tub electricity worked out. It is taken care of now. However, we did not receive any further emails nor a call regarding refund. We do feel our home is enjoyable for most people, and fills a special niche.
