Mack's River Shack - On the AuSable River up near the headwaters area south of Frederic, this 2 bedroom 1 bath rustic log cabin sits only about 50 feet from the river.
This little cabin is exactly what comes to mind when you think "cabin on the river". It has an enclosed front porch and deck. The cabin includes a fireplace, a well equipped kitchen and the state land across the river insures a quiet time for all. It’s very secluded. There's a fire pit out front and wireless high speed Internet access too.
There’s excellent brook trout fishing out front and it’s only a few miles from the Manistee River, the other AuSable River Branches and our local lakes, it’s a great base camp location. This is a great area for kayaking and the ATV/snowmobile trails are directly accessible too. There's very little river use pressure here.
The neighbors on either side are a professional fly fishing guide/fly tier and a bamboo rod maker.

Thanksgiving require a 4 night minimum stay.
A refundable security deposit of $250 is required plus a
non-refundable $30 cleaning fee. Security deposit is required

Why the Owner Chose Grayling
Being fly fishers we always wanted a little secluded cabin on the river. We were lucky to find the perfect one and we truly enjoy it.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
Fly fishing and kayaking out the front door is the big thing from spring to fall, then come grouse & deer hunting. You can walk to some very productive spots. When winter sets in we snowshoe and snowmobile from the cabin on the state land and extensive trail network. There are so many things to do in the area throughout the year, Northern Michigan at its best!

We were looking for a quiet getaway for the weekend. We found it with this cabin. Wonderful location, wonderful cabin (so warm and homey), wonderful folks to rent from! I have already recommended this rental to close friends who are also looking for a quiet place to go.

Was Looking for last minute getaway with a couple of friends and found the perfect little spot! Very Clean & provided all the basics needed for some much needed R&R. Enjoyed the privacy along the river spot and "river walking" kinda felt like a kid again exploring the woods. Of course the Firepit for the evening entertainment was always the nice capper to a relaxing day with wonderful friends. Cabin is perfect size for 2 couples looking for some peace & quiet from the everyday hustle & bustle...would definitely book again...Thank You for sharing your Cabin!

Sorry to be so late in posting this review. We(my wife, our dog, and myself) stayed in the cabin the last week of July, 2010. The cabin is perfect! We had a relaxing time on that beautiful river! This location is increcdible. We were able to get out and fish the Manastee River as well. The people at the Old Au Sable Fly Shop were very helpful. If you like a quaint vacation spot, with all the comforts of home, you found it here. We enjoyed the screened in porch, the charcoal grill, and tried like heck to catch some trout in the Au Sable. We got a few little brook trout there, but were able to catch some nicer trout on the Manastee. We plan to go back for sure. Thanks for making your home available to us!

My family and I stayed for a long weekend at this cabin. It was such a nice place. A log cabin with a screened in porch with a deck. We could sit and watch the birds at the feeders in the morning. The fireplace would be nice on the cooler nights too. I would recommend this cabin for a family or two couples. It was relaxing and close to town too!!

Very clean, cozy, comfortable, quaint. They had it nicely staged for us when we arrived too...Christmas lights hanging on the windows of the enclosed porch that were on when we arrived early evening. Nice touch! Had fires in the cabin fireplace and out in the fire pit. So nice! It felt very private there on the river too. Can't say enough about how much we loved it! We almost stayed another night but, alas, were unable to do that :( Definitely recommend this cabin. Can't wait to go back.
