Keywords: Restored Farmhouse
Our house is a restored farmhouse in the small village of Buti on the eastern slope of Mt .Serra, 30 minutes from Pisa airport and 30 minutes from Lucca. Our front door is next to the ancient castle gate and our back door opens onto our terraced olive groves and grapevines. We are approx 60 minutes from Florence and 40 minutes from the sea. We are in the middle of fantastic road and mountain biking and guided rides are available.
There are 5 excellent restaurants within walking distance with another 5 within 10 minutes by car. The owners live on the property, speak Italian and are available for historic, gastronomic and beach excursions. Buti is a genuine Italian village off the beaten path that has a wonderful small theater (Teatro Francesco Bartolo), and a series of dinners with entertainment (sagre) that are put on by the various neighborhoods (contrade) that culminate in the Palio of San Antonio held each year in January. The Palio is a horserace that is highly anticipated and preceded by a wonderful parade in period costumes. Buti is also well known for the high quality extra virgin olive oil produced here for centuries.
The house is located across the street from the old Castle!
Upon entering the main floor, you will find a well equipped kitchen, the dinning and the living area with french doors overlooking the orchard and olive groves.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms with a shared 3/4 bath. Wonderful tall ceilings and windows that open up to a beautiful view.
Downstairs, there is a lovely bedroom with it's own 3/4 bath and french doors that lead out onto a patio. And there is another room with a small kitchenette, a very comfortable sofa bed and a large private bathroom.
There are a couple of terraces where you can enjoy the view, have dinner or sit and read a book.
When we are in Buti, we run the house as a Bed and Breakfast.

Restored Farmhouse in a Small Village Between Pisa/Lucca
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Buti
We chose to buy our home because of the style and location. It is a small village surrounded by lovely countryside, very convenient from the airport in Pisa, close to historic cities, the sea, the mountains. One of our favorite things is that we can park our car and get everywhere on foot, grocery shopping, pharmacy, post office, coffee bar and numerous nice restaurants. Also out the door are great hikes and bike rides!
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse
For us it is a genuine immersion in a small Italian town, people are friendly and open, there is a living farm, food culture. It is peaceful and quiet with the sound of running water always.
Beautifully restored theater named after the first commentator of Dante's Inferno. Francesco Bartolo was born in Buti in the early 1300's.
Owner's Map of Buti
We came to Italy after many years in Santa Fe, NM where we designed and built adobe homes. My grandparents were born in Italy at the turn of the last century, then immigrated to the US. We love ancient architecture, language and culture and decided to change our lives. When we bought this house as a fixer upper it was because of the great location, existing ancient olive groves and vineyards and general ambiance. We have become immersed in the rhythm of this village and zone and are happy to share this area with our guests. Diane loves yoga and hiking while I am a passionate road cyclist.

Casa Bici Buti was the perfect choice for our first visit to Italy. It is very close to Pisa and Lucca and has easy access to public transportation and autostrade but there is a feeling of stepping back in time when you are there. The house is well photographed but does not convey the impact of the rusticity, warmth and beauty of the old stone, olive grove and surrounding village and castle. The house has all the amenities you need with everything you need available within walking distance in the village. It was a wonderful experience and I can't recommend it enough.
Owner response:Cara, Cindy, Bob, Leroy and Tina, We want to thank you for your wonderful response to our home in Italy. And we are so happy you enjoyed the house and our town, Buti! We are ready to "step back in time" ourselves, when we leave for Italy next week to run the house as a B&B and lead a couple of tours. We hope that some day you can return to the Old World. Perhaps even join us and let us fix you breakfast! Or just enjoy it, like it is yours. La Casa Nostra e' La Casa Vostra! Sincerely, Diane and Michael

The house is just fabulous. We spent 2 weeks my wife and I and our daughter. 3 of us in this huge house. The village is beautifull and the people are extremely friendly. And relaxing on the terrace after a long day of sightseing is a bonus. I definetly recommend
Owner response:We are so happy you enjoyed our house, our town and it's people as much as we do! We hope you can return again and again. Thank You Sincerely, Diane and Michael

Our family of five took a two-week vacation in Italy, June 2011. After five days in Rome, we headed to Casa Bici in Buti. This idyllic stone house and its property was the perfect prescription for our family after the intensity of the city. We really felt like we had truly experienced living in small-town Italy after our five days in Buti. The location worked for day trips to Cinque Terre and Lucca, but the best days were when we stayed "home"! We enjoyed walking into town from the house to the bakery, cheese shop, and restaurants. We highly recommend Casa Bici Buti! One piece of advice- There is a very steep and narrow hill leading to the house, but you can always park in the free lot by the town square a short way away if you aren't comfortable with it.
Owner response:We are so happy to hear you enjoyed our house and Buti as much as we do! And we hope you will return soon! Sincerely, Diane and Michael Sandrin

We rented the villa for a week in April and I would highly recommend it. It was truly an Italian villa with a small town that you can walk to the center and buy your vegetables, fruits, bread and meats daily. It was the true Italian adventure. If you want to experience the lifestyle this is the place for you. I have memories that will stay with me forever. Only problem is you can not have a big car here, the streets are too narrow.
Owner response:Dear Cathy, Thank you for your lovely review. It always makes us happy to know that the people who stay in our house, enjoy it as much as we do. Sincerely, Diane and Michael Sandrin

stayed in the farmhouse for 3 nights. family of 4 - had an amazing time. the farmhouse as well as Buti is a magical place - cobble stone streets etc. the house is very well equipped, very clean, has an amazing outdoor space. at night thousands of fireflys filled the hills.....best food in the little town of Buti......centrally located to Pisa,Tuscany and Cinque terre day trips...would definitely visit again...thanks Michael for letting us use your house.
Owner response:So happy to hear you loved our house as much as we do. We too, love the fireflies at night! And we agree the food is fantastic! Great Restaurants in Buti! Thank You for choosing Casa Bici Buti and we hope you will return again sometime soon! Sincerely, Diane and Michael

We recently stayed at Casa Bici Buti with a large family; 2 granparents, 2 parents, and 3 children. The location is really great for exploring north-western Tuscany. Lucca and Pisa are very close, and Volterra and Florence are only an hour drive away. We were really impressed with the accomodations. A very "Classic" Tuscany Villa. The village of Buti itself was very picturesque; just be sure not to rent a large car (very narrow streets). We ended up touring during the day, and coming back to Buti in the evening for dinner. I would highly recommend "the Grotto" along the main road to the villa. It was really magical to wake up to olive and wine vineyards with the mist coming over the mountains. Michael was very helpful, and his agent in town was available very quickly by phone. I was very happy with the house, the location, and the owners. We have been to several VRBO properties in the course of our European travel, and I have to admit that Casa Buti was probably our favorite. Thanks again Michael!
Owner response:We are so happy you enjoyed our house and Buti, as much as we do! And La Grotta, the vineyards and olive groves! We know the road up to our house is narrow, and we hope you found the other parking lot below, where the road is not so narrow and only a couple minutes walk from our house. Thank you for your nice response and we hope that you will return some day soon! Sincerely, Diane and Michael Sandrin

We had a great time in this beautiful house! It was very roomy for the 9 of us. It was also a great location for day trips to all the sites we wanted to see--Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, Cinque Terre, Siena, and Florence. The owner left countless travel books in the house that were very helpful for us! He was also great about answering our questions. Buti is like other Italians towns in that it has very narrow streets which always make for an adventure with our American-sized mini van. There is only one small parking spot in front of the house so we had to park in one of the free parking areas with our van. If you have a large vehicle, I do not recommend continuing up the hill past the farmhouse to that parking area. We did with our van and reached a curve where we couldn't get through. We were able to back out and once we figured out where another Parking area was (right off the main Piazza) we didn't have a problem. The neighbors were really friendly despite the fact I couldn't speak any Italian!! Our GPS took us right to the house but seemed to have trouble getting us out of town and to the main roads. I'd recommend having a good map and directions just to help. We loved this cute little town and would love to go back!!
Owner response:We are so happy you enjoyed our house as much as we do and hope someday you can return! And thank you for your wonderful review. Sincerely, Diane and Michael Sandrin
