Portugal is still a great holiday deal when you live like the residents and in this apartment, ideally located along the coast between Lisbon and Cascais, in the charming village of Carcavelos, you will do just that. This recently refurbished apartment marries old world Portuguese charm with 21 C convenience. The open floor plan with the wrap around balcony and French doors offers a light-filled living and dining area with ocean breezes year round and an ocean view from which to watch the boat traffic into the important port of Lisbon, 25 minutes away by commuter train.
The apartment is in a residential area with a 2 minute walk to the longest beach along the Lisbon-Cascais coast, host to international surfing, kite surfing and wind surfing contests. At one end of the beach sits the imposing 16C fort of Sao Juliao de Barra, once a political prison, at the other is an outcropping of ocean rock locally renowned for it's curative iodine. In between stretches a boardwalk dotted with restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and water sport centers.
Nearby two 4-star hotels have pool, gym and conference facilities available at a per diem rate. There is a taxi stand and a tennis club and a small shopping center that offers every service needed and the delightful praceta next door has restaurants for every taste and budget. With shopping, dining and excellent public transportation close by there is no need for a car but rental agencies are just a few minutes up the train line. Equally accessible to Lisbon with it's rich history and culture, Estoril with it's famous Casino and Cascais, a picturesque fishing village. Nearby is the beautiful mountain retreat of Sintra, the seat of the Portuguese royals and aristocracy with a palace, a castle and Moorish ramparts.

My brother and I inherited this apartment from my mother. We spent our teenage years as American ex-pats in this apartment before we both moved back to the USA for school, work, then marriage and family. We feel very connected to the property and love Portugal and wish we could be there more often. Recently we renovated the apartment in the hope that more people will enjoy what we enjoy and that it will be used more frequently. The neighbors are very pleasant as is the location. We have friends and connections that can help us personalize a visit with insider information and recommendations.
Why the Owner Chose Lisbon
My mother chose this apartment (which we have since inherited) because of it's location. She never drove and it is ideally located to public transportation, sits in a neighborhood with every amenity and is close to one of the better beaches along this remarkable coast line. She chose Portugal because of it's beauty and because it was less expensive than the rest of Europe. It still is while never cutting back on any of the cultural experiences.
The Unique Benefits of this Condo
I return to Portugal at least once a year to visit friends and revisit fond memories. Growing up in Portugal was a great experience and it spoiled me for food and wine. You really have to work hard to get a bad meal anywhere in Portugal. Eating out and outdoor cafe life is very much a part of the experience. After 35 years, the country still surprises me with it's easy hospitality and mixed charms, diverse influences, history and earthiness.
