Livingston house description

This charming holiday home lies on the banks of the Shields River, surrounded by the Absaroka-Beartooth and Crazy Mountain ranges. Ideally located for exploring the Livingston area and enjoying many activities all year round. The Shields River Hideaway makes a great winter or summer getaway.

The home is perfectly set up for families, couples and small groups. Decorated in rustic, western style, with tasteful furniture, artwork and well-appointed amenities throughout, Shields River Hideaway feels like a home away from home.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and en suite bathroom; the second bedroom has a queen bed; the third bedroom has two singles. Each bedroom has huge built-in closets and a tall dresser, each bathroom has a full-size bath and shower.

The kitchen is famously well equipped, has ample counter space and is flanked by a large breakfast bar with 4 bar stools, opening to the formal dining area with table and chairs. The dining and adjacent living areas boast magnificent picture windows facing the garden and a grove of cottonwood trees beyond.

The living room fireplace (gas-fired) warms the house and creates cozy ambiance during winter. Comfy leather couches in the living room are a great place to enjoy a good book or movie from our small library.

The outdoor deck is furnished with a gas BBQ and plenty of comfortable seating options – cushioned lounge chairs and table/chairs for outdoor dining. The deck is the perfect place for morning coffee to the sound of the birds, afternoon snoozing in the sun or evening cocktails to the warm glow of the sun setting behind the mountains.

Situated on 20 private acres in the Shields Valley, including private river frontage on the Shields River, the property features delightful garden walking trails and many charming nooks to relax, explore and enjoy. Animal and birdlife are abundant - deer, wild turkey, Sandhill cranes, bald-headed eagles and beavers are frequent visitors, we have even welcomed a moose and this year for the first time we hosted a black bear and her two cubs!

In Summer enjoy fishing from your own private access to the Shields River, steps from your backdoor. The property is less than 2 miles from the nearest public access to the Yellowstone River and close to many creeks for additional fishing access. There are endless opportunities to enjoy our beautiful rivers - swimming, floating, tubing and white water rafting - all just a short walk from your door. Horseback riding is available on nearby ranches.

Winter fun includes cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing right from your doorstep. Downhill skiing and snowmobiling are within reasonable driving distance.

What are the words one uses when describing that "coming home feeling"? Welcoming...Comfortable...Belonging....Relaxed....Satisfied. That's how we felt All of that and more. We had "come home" for a month for our second summer at the Shield's River Hideaway. We are already looking forward to year three.

Victoria was very accomodating and helpful with my many questions as this was my first cabin type rental. The property was better than I expected. We had excellent fishing and the daily wildlife was an extra bonus. My girls loved the swimming hole. It's a very short distance to Livingston. I recommend Gil's Goods for eating, The rib and chop restaurant was always busy we just never made it there. We ate on the patio and simply enjoyed the little bit of heaven around us. The washer and dryer were a huge bonus. The beds were very comfortable and the fresh air made for very restfull sleep. The kitchen is very ample. I enjoyed the jetted tub after a day at Yellowstone. The north entrance to Yellowstone is a nice drive and takes an hour give or take, depending on traffic. If you stay here, take some time to visit the boiling springs with your kids. It's a popular swimming area south of the north gate that is warmed by a geyser. There's a very nice reservoir in Bozeman with a really great waterfull that's only about 45 mins away as well. The hike is easy enough that a 4 yr old could do it. On a personal note, if you drink whiskey as my man does, He highly suggests trying the local made Neversweat. In his opinion it's "amazing". Our time here went by way to fast and we all miss it!!!

Large master bedroom. Big living room and kitchen/dining. Everything was very clean and neat when we arrived. The owners are really nice and made sure everything was ready for our stay: fresh bed sheets, towels, soap in the bathroom. New western theme furniture, big screen TV with satellite dish. Large load laundry washer/dryer. The bathtubs (with shower) were sparkling clean. Refrigerator, dishwasher, oven/range, microwave were all clean and fairly new. Ranch style house with everything on one floor, though there are 4 steps up to the entrance. Beautiful views of the Absarokee and Crazy mountain ranges. Right on the Shields River (one of the best trout fishing streams in Montana). 10 minutes to Livingston (fishing & camping supplies, groceries, shopping) and about 1 1/2 hour from the North entrance to Yellowstone Park (Mammoth Hot Springs). Drift boats can be rented on the Yellowstone with/without guides. Near Yellowstone park you can take a raft trip down the Yellowstone through Yankee Jim canyon. Last year we saw a large herd of elk within a mile of the place and this year a large herd of deer was nearby. Also saw hawks and some eagles on the Yellowstone River (about 1 mile away). We didn't have time for horseback riding, pack trips, or backpacking this time but there are plenty of places to do that in the area (just ask the owners and they can hook you up).

We were really impressed with our vacation! A convenient location near the Bozeman airport, it provides a straight shot into Yellowstone Park through the Gallatin National Forest. There is a nice quiet river (The Shields) nearby for fly fishing or cooling off, and great views of the surrounding mountains. The accomodations were comfortable - flat screen TV, nice leather recliners - and had plenty of room to spread out and relax. There were plenty of bedrooms and enough dishware and appliances to save some money by cooking at home. We will definitely be coming back!

My family stayed for a week at this rental located right next to one of the premier trout Rivers in all of Montana (if you fish you have probably heard of the Shield's). Yellowstone park is only about an hour or hour and a half away so we made a few day trips to the park as well during our trip. We have actually stayed there a couple of different times the last few years and they have made alot of updates to the house, it is really nice inside and has all the ammenities of our house back home on the east coast here. Full kitchen with stove, silverware and plates, dishwasher, satellite tv, 3 bedrooms (one master with a bathroom in it, then a queen size bed in another room, and a third bedroom with two twin beds in it), there is a second full bathroom down the hall for the two other rooms to use and also a laundry room with a washer and dryer so you don't have to worry about packing too much. We just pack for half a week so that we don't have to pack too much on the plane and then just do laundry in the place halfway through the trip. Also, has a deck out the back door where you can sit and look at the snow capped mountains all around the valley (just the other side of one set of mountains is Yellowstone Park)! Overall, I would definitely recommend staying there just don't book up my weeks hahaha!!!

We had a wonderful week's stay at the "Hideaway." Another couple visited for part of the time, and the house has a great set-up for two couples, as the master is on one end of the house, and the other two bedrooms are at the other end, so there's privacy if you want it. We enjoyed sitting out on the porch every evening for happy hour and had a couple of lunches out there, as well. The setting is very peaceful, but access is easy, and you are only 10 minutes from Livingston for groceries, restaurants, etc. The house is very clean and has everything you might need. Wi-Fi is fast, so it was easy for us to catch up on some work when necessary. We had some good fishing on the Shields, but there really isn't enough "water" for two die-hard fisherman (like us) to fish all day, everyday. Yes, the Yellowstone is super close, but is more suited to floating with a guide than wade fishing on your own. We went to Yellowstone NP twice, did two days of guided fishing, and fished two days on our own on the Shields. The time flew by, and we would enjoy visiting the area and the "Hideaway" again.

Shields River Hideaway was absolutely perfect! We were looking for a place to stay when visiting the kids and grandkids in Clyde Park. The house is roomy, yet cozy. Very comfortable. The property is beautiful and quiet. The welcome basket waiting for us was such a nice treat (the Australia biscuits were yummy). Victoria and Stuart have gone out of their way to make this a home away from home for travelers and are wonderful hosts. We are so happy to have found this hideaway and plan on booking it for future visits. We highly recommend this property.

The Woman's Point of View....It took 15 yrs of renting in the Livingston MT area for us to finally find "The Shields River Hideway." It is so close to conveniences; restaurants, grocery stores and shops but retains the remote feeling. A perfect getaway. The house is very comfortable, clean and has the best equipped kitchen I've ever seen. In fact, better than my own. Paula Dean could film a cooking show here and have everything needed! The Man's Point of View....The stretch of the Shields River that borders the "Hideaway" is the most perfect home for the elusive trout, whether rainbow, cutthroat, or brookie. A mile of river all to yourself except for an occasional deer. I want to brag also about the incredible hospitality of Victoria and Stuart. Our month's stay couldn't be improved on.

It was a pleasure to have you here. We are sorry you missed the bears this year, but hopefully they will visit us again next year too. We are already looking forward to welcoming you back. We had an exceptional time while staying at the Shields Hideaway !!! We were here for 3 weeks, and could have stayed longer. Our grown children brought their families at different times, and the home suited all of our needs ~ both in size and amenities. The cleanliness was apparent as soon as you walked in, and having all the dishes, towels, laundry facilities, and grilling outside, was all you could ask for. The wildlife that visited the property was an added bonus for the grandkids, and many received names for their daily appearances ! A swim in the river also became a daily ritual. If you didn't find enough local activities through the day to keep you busy, at night you could watch tv with DISH channels to keep you connected to the outside world. But with the beauty of the mountains, and trails, fishing, hiking, museums, parks, and great restaurants, watching tv, will be the last thing on the agenda. Thanks Victoria and Stuart for making your house our home. Donna & Jeff

We're so glad we found this property! It was immaculate, comfortable and very conveniently located on the beautiful Shields River. My sons and husband loved being able to fish right behind the house. The grounds were meticulously maintained. The kitchen was as equipped as ours back home, so we saved a lot on meals and loved baking in the evenings. We ate our meals on the deck and s'mores by the fire. The jetted tub in the master bedroom was great after a long hike to a waterfall (Passage Falls - highly recommended!). Our boys brought a football and baseball and took advantage of the huge yard. The location was perfect for day trips to Yellowstone and Bozeman. We would definitely stay here again.

Owner response: Michael and Heidi, We're so glad you found us too! And we are delighted you had such an enjoyable visit. It is wonderful to have guests take advantage of all the property has to offer, which you certainly did. We now have inner tubes too for floating the river out front, so in the event we have the pleasure of your company again next year you can add that to the list of options :-) Best wishes, Stu, Victoria and Emily

About the owner: We are a young family of four living in paradise.. I am a transplant to Montana from Sydney, Australia via London and New York. Despite having grown up in a large coastal city in Australia, and worked most of my career in the corporate world in big cities, I always knew the country was the dream destination - a place to breathe fresh air, take things a little more slowly, appreciate nature, enjoy quality of life and raise a family. My husband is a local - he grew up here, was educated here and runs a business here. He convinced me to move here once we married, although in all honesty it didn't take any convincing at all.. Moving to Montana and embracing the country life has been an adjustment no question, but a wonderfully rewarding and enriching one. Being able to start a family here and feeling so very welcomed and supported by the local community and our neighbors has made it the easiest, most happy transition possible. We love where we live and appreciate our home. We hope to be able to share it with you someday too. Victoria Schilling

                              Why the Owner Chose Livingston:
We knew this was the place for us the minute we heard about it, properties like this in the Shields Valley don't come on the market very often. There is something magical about every season here. With the river, the mountains, the wildlife and birdlife, the warm glow of the sun rising over the Crazy Mountains and clear twinkling night skies it is hard not to feel privileged to live somewhere so special. Being right on the Shields River we enjoy all it has to offer including swimming, tubing and fishing in summer, and in winter we are able to ice-skate on our own frozen pond and cross-country ski through the wonderful walking trails through our woods. Also for us the convenience of living in the country, just 10 minutes from the historic town of Livingston, is the perfect balance.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The guest house is the original ranch house on the property. It enjoys stunning views of the Crazy Mountains and is surrounded by a gorgeous expanse of green lawn, great for outdoor games and kids to play. We have our own private woods, walking trails and riverbank path that provide ample room to explore and relax. The guest house is set up as we would like it set up for ourselves, our family and friends, so there are a lot more little extras and conveniences that make it even more like a home away from home.
