Charming Historic Home in Downtown Wilmington
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Wilmington
I chose to live in Wilmington because of the totally charming relaxed life-style, and the user friendly weather. The people are sweet and helpful and really make it a joy to live here.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Walking around downtown with my dog, and having coffee every morning at Java Dog; browsing in the antique and consignment shops. The beach is a 20 minute drive at rush hour.
Owner's Map of Wilmington
I recently retired from selling residential real estate. I have two children and five grandchildren, two cats and one dog. I live at Kure Beach, about 20 miles from historic downtown Wilmington.

My husband and I rented this beautiful home for a 50th anniversary celebration with my in-laws. Everything about the home was just perfect for ourselves and our guests. The owner was very helpful and made our stay pleasant. We liked the neighborhood and its charm. We enjoyed our trip to Wilmington and loved staying at this charming home in the historic downtown of Wilmington. We look forward to coming back and staying longer.

We just returned from our first visit to Wilmington last week and we stayed at this home. We found it to be absolutely charming! It was clean, and very well appointed! We never saw any bugs (dead or alive) or mouse droppings during our stay. The house is in the historic district and is a short walk to the downtown area which is full of great shops and restaurants. We loved getting up each morning and walking downtown for coffee. The neighborhood is a bit "eclectic," but that only added to its charm! The street is a nice mix of locals who have been there for decades, young homesteaders with kids, and yes, some students. The street was very quiet and we always felt safe. The owner is delightful, very helpful, and a pleasure to do business with. We would definitely stay there again!

I have been fortunate enough to have stayed in this home several times. It has been updated with modern appliances and amenities, but it still maintains the charm of historic Wilmington. It is obvious that the owner has great taste. The paintings are original, and aren't typical of what you would find in a rental. It is obvious that this is a personal home. It is very welcoming and feels like home to me. I loved it and considered moving to Wilmington after the visit. The problem is, I want to live there!

Cons: House is located in a less desirable location; a few dead cockroaches and 2 live cockroaches were found within the first day or two (although the owner did explain the property had just been treated a week or so prior) and mouse droppings were found in the main bathroom; was not particularly clean (shower curtain had mold, sills and inside shelves of furniture was dusty); next door neighbor had people coming and going all hours of the night; driveway listed enough space for 3-4 cars...it is very narrow with a lot of overgrowth from shrubs jutting into it; you pay a cleaning fee and are left instructions that upon leaving to please dry mop the floors & vacuum (ok, understandable- we had a pet), strip the beds, clean and put away the dishes (again...feasible) and clorox the tubs (huh??); oh and WATCH OUT for the hot water- it will scald you!; in addition many personal items are still in the home...some of which are not meant for the eyes of children Pros- Although not in the most desirable neighborhood (minutes away is a Food Lion on Oleander...there is an armed guard at the door) we never felt unsafe; it is minutes away from downtown, 20 minutes away from Wrightsville Beach (which is great) and is submerged in the center of historical Wilmington; pet-friendly
Owner response:Ouch! I’m sorry that you had such a negative experience. 209 S. 6th Street is in the designated historic district of Wilmington and most people that come here are interested in history and the charm of a bygone era. For a beach experience I would recommend Wrightsville or Kure. It is nice that they are close by so that you’re not locked into the eating, walking, shopping thing. The driveway is most definitely narrow but it was designed early in the last century for smaller cars. When I lived there I hardly ever used the driveway for that reason. Wilmington and vicinity are in a subtropical climate (USDA zone 8) so we have lots of palm trees, sub tropical flowers, live oaks, Spanish moss and bugs. For that reason I have the house fumigated twice a year. The mouse droppings are indeed a mystery. I never saw even a hint when I lived there, but then I had two cats. I never had any “love offerings” of that variety – mostly just lizards and frogs. There are many personal things in the house – in fact all of them – paintings, sculpture, books, linens, dishes, appliances, etc. It is my personal home. It is not a hotel or bed and breakfast. The important thing is that you have enough drawer and closet space to put your things for a week, or a month. I have suggestions in the house on a more upscale shopping experience for groceries, wine, liquor, etc. I appreciate your comments as I believe it benefits everyone in making the best holiday choices. Sincerely, Andrea Moriarty

This house and location is FABULOUS! My teenaged daughters and I wanted a "One Tree Hill" Wilmington vacation to see the various locations where the OTH show takes place and we were not disappointed. The house is beautiful and location to be able to walk to the Riverwalk, restaurants, museums and attractions downtown are second to none. It's a 30 minute or less drive to 3 great beaches! There is lots to do! The house itself is excellent and I would recommend this to everyone. Young, older or in between the area has something for everyone. Very clean, feather top beds very comfortable. The owner of the home was extremely accommodating in making arrangements for payment (since we were from outside the USA). Very communicative and easy to deal with in every way. Various brochures of locations in the area were provided as well with some notes on "best choices" Our Yorkie "Handsome" also loved the sidestreets for nice long walks and the park at Greenfield Lake. Everything about the home, the owner and the area was absolutely excellent and made for a very memorable vacation for us! It was a home away from home! We hope to be back next year! Thank you so much!
Owner response:THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND WORDS!!! Hope to see you next year. Warmest regards, Andrea Moriarty

What a great place to stay! This lovely historic home felt like our own private B&B. Tree-lined street, spanish moss, natural surroundings. Just a few blocks from downtown Wilmington and less than half an hour from the beach. Wood floors throughout, four-poster featherbeds, high ceilings, modern kitchen, large sunroom in back, landscaped backyard. I personally slept like a baby here. Peaceful. Owner is kind, helpful, and readily accessible. Prices are more than reasonable. Wilmington is a one-of-a-kind town with lots of interesting shops, restaurants, historic places, and friendly people. I would definitely go back.

Positives: clean, spacious, beautiful porch and back yard, only 3-4 blocks from downtown, 20 - 30 minutes from various beaches, VERY reasonable price, very accomodating and friendly owner Drawbacks/Things to be aware of: Odor - musty or cat, home appears to be lived in part-time so personal items are there Overall: Very nice home and an enjoyable weekend!!!
