Quintessential Maine home featured as cover story in Accent Magazine (See Cover Photo). Very private situated on the Piscataqua River with access to the Atlantic Ocean. Dock and mooring provide use of kayaks, canoe, and excellent swimming. Lie in the hammock and enjoy stunning sunsets every afternoon. Home is located directly on the Piscataqua River, about five miles from Portsmouth, NH where the Piscataqua joins the ocean. Boats can go directly to the ocean and use of a mooring at the house is included. The river is tidal and makes for very good swimming (the water is generally 10 to 15 degrees warmer than at the ocean) with safe, gentle current anytime between half and full high tide. This part of the river is wide and wooded with few houses for a very private feel in completely natural surroundings. There is a tremendous amount of wildlife viewing directly from the house including bald eagle, red tail hawk, cormorant, fox, deer, wild turkey, and seal. Excellent fishing for Striped Sea Bass and Bluefish, directly in front of the house.
Home features 1 bedroom with double bed, den with fold out futon and bath on the first floor and 2 bedrooms and bath on the second floor including a Master suite with French doors to balcony overlooking the water, master bath includes large spa tub. Kitchen/dining/family room with stone fireplace and French doors to deck and screened porch. Living room with grand piano and built in bookcases.
Kitchen offers 6 burner cook top, stainless refrigerator and walk in pantry. Property surrounded by gardens and many opportunities for quiet walks. Nearby Portsmouth and Portland offer tons of cultural events, restaurants and shopping.

As we prepare to leave your special home I carry with me so many wonderful memories and such a sense of peace. I will miss hearing the roosters in the morning and all the other sounds of nature that add to the serenity of this magical place. The tides, the morning and evening skies, and the changing light all make this a truly wondrous setting. Your sense of elegance and whimsy create a feeling of relaxation immediately. Usually it takes several days for me to shift into vacation mode but as soon as I walked into your home it was instantaneous. Every room has its own character with loving attention to detail. Your sense of color and design is a feast for the eyes.Owner response: Thank you so much, it means alot to us that you enjoyed your time at Starboard Cove.

This house has everything you need for a wonderful, relaxing stay. The sunsets are indeed breathtaking. The chef in our group was impressed with the extent of supplies in the kitchen and we all enjoyed our meals in the screened-in porch. The only negative about our stay is that we had to leave.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, people with disabilities.

Although we took rides to local attractions like Kittery, York Beach and Ogunquit, we spent most of our time just hanging on the property which was secluded and relaxing. The river views both inside and outside were amazing. The only reason we did not give this property 5 stars was that the property itself was in need of a little upkeep. However, we brought this to the attention of the owners who appreciated the feedback, and were already in the process of making changes and upgrades. With a little TLC, we would definitely consider staying here again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We had a great time in Maine and were delighted by your wonderful home and tranquil setting. The home was well equipped and had a very welcoming atmosphere. The scenery was beautiful and the views from the master bedroom spectacular. It was really conducive to sharing time with our family. I couldn't have picked a better setting. The pictures on the website were lovely but the experience of being on the river in a very private setting and lovely accomodations was even better. We especially enjoyed our dinners on the screened in porch. We will definitely recommend your home to our friends and family and hope to get back to Maine for another vacation. We could not have been more pleased with this beautiful home. The owners were gracious and accommodating. The setting was perfect - private, beautiful, tranquil. The house had everything one could wish for and was beautifully furnished. We enjoyed our evenings indoors as much as our days outdoors. We look forward to returning if the home is available next summer.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We stayed in this lovely home in August 2009. It wasn't like a rental; it was like being a guest in someone's treasured home. The owners greated us to show us every detail of the home. We had every thing we needed for cooking. There were so many reading and relazing nooks. And the art, books and movies made the place so enjoyable. Our kids loved all the games, toys, the pool and ping pong table and waterfront with kayaks and canoes. It was truly a vacation!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We have rented many vacation homes over the years, and River Cottage is a true exeption. It's a gorgeous home with every comfort you can imagine, secluded in the countryside on the river yet close to several wonderful attractions. And the owners are generous, accoommodating and delightful people. What a find!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: Dan is a professional, architectural photographer gone solar design/installation consultant. Holly is a Certified Financial Planner. In addition to Casa Isabel they own Rancho Sol y Mar on the Pacific Coast in a small Village called Mayto. They have additional VRBO listings located in Eliot Maine USA and one soon to be listed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA. When they are not traveling they are involved in promoting sustainable and alternative energy, hanging with friends and their five children. Please email us for the link describing our Mexican activities if you would like?
Why the Owner Chose Eliot:
We honestly feel this is the most beautiful and best location to live in the US. The peace and serenity living on the water this close to major cities is hard to find. We travel alot so being an hour from Boston's International Airport is great. We have the benefit of being on the water, minutes from the Atlantic ocean and an hour to skiing or hiking in the mountains.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is very important to both of us that we are in touch with nature every day. Living in this home does that for us. The many large windows that open to decks and balconeys bring the outdoors in. We also have a large screened porch where we literally live in the summer months. We take all of our meals there and sometimes sleep there. Wildlife is abundant in the area keeping every day exciting.
