Location: Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, Wine Country, California, USA (One hour North of San Francisco in the Sonoma Wine Country) View Map
Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 8)
Keywords: House with Guest Tent Cabin
This is a lovely hideaway only an hour north of San Francisco. Situated 15 minutes away from Santa Rosa, it is in a quiet, private, rural setting. Three acres of California's rolling hills with natural grasses, old oaks, lush gardens, and your own vineyard give you the privacy to enjoy Sonoma County living at its best.
The house is casual and warm, with sets of French doors opening from almost every room onto flagstone patios, decks, lawn, and gardens. A private solar heated pool with an in-ground spa big enough for eight is just outside the master bedroom. It’s the place to watch the stars and the distant lights at night and great for just warming up after a cold dip in the pool. A waterfall at the edge of the pool has rocks you can sit on for sun and is also a good place to jump into the water.
The Great room houses the living room with fireplace, dining area, and gourmet kitchen with a Viking range, a Sub Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher. There are exposed beams and the ceiling reaches 12 feet high. Just outside the kitchen door is a large ground-level deck with charcoal grill, an herb garden and dining table and chairs.
Market umbrellas and six lounges are available around the pool for relaxing in the sun. The flagstone terrace, under an old Redwood tree and some Japanese Maples and Rhododendrons, also has plenty of comfortable outdoor seating.
The three bedrooms in the house have very high ceilings and are brightly furnished with an eclectic French farmhouse feel. Each is distinct. One, with a queen bed, has a double set of French doors opening onto a deck. The second is small and cozy with a skylight and a double bed. A bathroom with toilet, sink and shower is located between these bedrooms and the Great room.
The master bedroom is a very spacious room with views from the bed out the French doors and all the windows. Just outside the door is the pool and spa. The master bath has a shower with room for two and a tub with a view. Big windows and a door out to a back deck make it bright and open.
The fourth bedroom is for the more adventurous in the group. It's a special, more rustic hideaway up a long stairway between rows of vines, then up some stone steps and paths even higher to the Quinta. Here, a large flat area on the hillside above the valley has been civilized with a romantic white fabric tent-cabin and an expansive patio. It's a bit of a hike to get there (though there is a gravel road you can drive up).
A queen-size bed, tables, chairs, lamps, and a CD player make it something like sleeping outdoors but with few of disadvantages. Antique windows look out over a view of the Sonoma Plain.
At night, you see the lights of towns and suburbs in the distance. On most days, you can see mountains on the other side of the valley and the coastal sky beyond. The patio has tables, chairs, lounges, and a small outdoor fireplace. It makes an ideal spot for gathering to catch the late afternoon rays or to watch the sunset--or the stars. On the other side of the patio, is a double hammock available for snoozing in the shade of a huge old oak tree.
A winding path leads to a charming, indoor/outdoor bathhouse (cold water only). A colorful Mexican sink is sheltered from any rain by a tin roof, The toilet is a modern composting toilet that is odor free.
The location has surprisingly easy access to Highway 101. There are many wineries in the area. The Russian River Area, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Sonoma and Healdsburg are close and the Sonoma coast is within an hour. The Napa Valley is about 45 minutes away. Best of all, most of this travel is over beautiful back roads.

So Relaxing

We have stayed here several times over the years. Talk about relaxing. It is the type of place that makes you just want to "unplug" and tune out. The yard is so beautiful, we rarely find ourselves indoors before sunset. The pool and hot tub can't be beat. As a person in the food industry, the kitchen is more than sufficient. There is also a charcoal BBQ. If you like to grill, don't miss Bud's Custom Meats. They have a great selection of sausages, meats and sauces. Oliver's in Cotati is a great grocvery store. We try to do all our shopping before arriving so we never have to leave. The Quinta is a bit of a hike, but never fails to be worth it. Bring a nice cold beverage (or 2) and enjoy the view. We have two dogs and they seem to enjoy themselves as much as we do. Be sure to check your dogs for tics after your visit. On our last visit, our 2 year old really started to enjoy the pool. We had a hard time getting her out. There isn't a fence around the pool, so you need to keep an eye on the little ones. Overall, we love this house and can't wait to return with some friends for a birthday weekend.

I have stayed here several times, both in the house and in the guest house, and will surely stay again. The pool is the centerpiece, with its surrounding rocks, gardens and lounging space. That being said, I have been there in the winter as well, with the fireplace roaring and the soup simmering on the stove. The house is remote, but not hard to find, and quiet for peaceful retreats and great sleeping. It has everything you might need (tv, stereo, etc.) and is fun and festive and comfortable.

My family stayed at this home for four days in Early Oct, 2006. The exterior of the home is beautiful, a lovely landscaped deck or patio outside each door but the interior upholstered furnishings are tired and worn. Walls need a fresh coat of paint. The homeowner has some lovely wood pieces such as side tables, interesting mirrors and the house was once top notch. Cleanliness was a big issue for us, as the home was filled with many, many cobwebs, so we were puzzled where the collected cleaning fee went to. The curtains which are in place of kitchen cabinet doors were very gray and dirty, from hands reaching into the cabinets. We also found out why the home is pet friendly, as the owners 2 cats were on site and difficult to keep outside. We thought pet friendly meant WE could bring our pet if we wanted to, not that we spent time with his pet. We are not allergic to animals and we have owned several pets, but the house definitely had a cat odor. We have rented several homes before and we were surprised to find that we were to share space in the refrigerator, bathroom and closet with the homeowners personal items. At the time we rented, the homeowner advertised a washing machine, but it was locked in the garage and not available for our use. He has since removed that item from the list of amentities after my complaint to him. The casita is very cute, also needed some cleaning, but it is a long, steep walk up to it,better left to younger (or fitter) people than myself! My adult children loved the casita and spent several evenings enjoying the patio with firepit. With a major, deep, thorough cleaning, some fresh paint and a few replaced furniture items, this home could again be top notch!
Owner response:This review was posted 3 years ago and it is the only negative response I've received. The two "tired" chairs have been replaced with new leather club chairs and the other living room furniture has been reupholstered. The great room has been painted. I cant guarantee no cobwebs. We try, but the house is in the country. The cats (now only one) were left there because the renter liked them and asked that they stay. They are able to open the screen doors and let themselves in. Now the cats always go with me when I leave. I've never been told of a cat odor. There is no cat box. Sparky goes outside. And there is now a washer and dryer in the house.
