Owner's Map of Somesville

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I began painting in oil in 2000. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I paint on the island in the summer and even run a plein air painting seminar with my friend, artist Alexandra Tyng.

Fabulous, fascinating house

Guest: B (New Haven, CT)
Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 08/06/11

I'd recommend this spacious, historic house for anybody who wants to enjoy Mount Desert Island while avoiding the crowds of Bar Harbor. All the rooms were large and well-furnished, many with good views; the house had fascinating old objects in every corner. It easily absorbed our 12-person party ranging in age from early 20s to late 50s, and when 7 more friends staying elsewhere came over for dessert there was plenty of space for everyone. We enjoyed playing croquet on the large lawn, relaxing on the side porch with its view of Somes Sound, swimming in nearby Long Pond, and exploring both the western and eastern sides of the park on foot, bicycle, and by car. The kitchen in the house is well suited for cooking and baking. We also enjoyed meeting both the owner Diana and the caretaker Dave, who were happy to give us excellent advice on local activities. Thanks to them for a wonderful week!

Charming, spacious, historic home

I would recommend this rental to any large group that appreciates a spectacular location, genuine historic status (a Park Ranger at the top of Cadillac Mtn made reference to Abraham Somes!), and the convenience of being close to Bar Harbor and the magnificent features of Acadia National Park. The house is very comfortable. The beds were fantastic and the kitchen updated so that we felt we had one foot in the 21st century. The porches were a great place to read and relax, and admire the view. We were grateful to have the chance to bring our small dog who enjoyed the big yard. Diana is a wonderful resource for any information about MDI or activities you might want to plan. My family and I would definitely rent this lovely home again.

WE HAD A WONDERFUL VIEW, GREAT LOCATION TO ALL SHOPPING & BUS ROUTES. WE SO ENJOYED THE HOME & DIANE WAS A WONDERFUL HELP IN LETTING US KNOW ALOT IN THE AREA. WE WOULD COME BACK TO SOMES HOUSE AGAIN. THE BEDROOMS & LINENS WERE SO GREAT. HOPE ALL THAT RENT THIS HOME WILL ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS ALL 13 FRIENDS DID. HOPE TO RETURN SOON.

Owner response:Thanks to all of you for taking such good care of our home! You were our first renters to use our new kitchen and I loved seeing you cooking such great meals. I had a nice email from Cheryl and she made a lovely comment as well. She said "It was like living in a postcard"! You really took full advantage of the island. I was so impressed that you got up for sunrise on Cadillac, bi-plane rides, and even a four hour canoe ride on Long Pond. I love that you fully enjoyed our home and all the island has to offer! You are always welcome!!

We had a great week with our young kids and our friends with their young kids. The house/bedroom set-up is nice for more than one family/several people as we all had our own space. We were able to do a lot of exploring, fun activities and the house location is very convenient to getting around MDI. Diana was helpful with quesitons and concerns, and was very gracious about letting us have our big dog as an outdoor guest. We would definitely recommend for a Maine vacation.

Perfect Home-base for exploring MDI

Guest: Jim and Gay (Minnesota)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 08/24/10

What a wonderful, historic property. We were scrambling for a MDI rental, and were very lucky to find Diana and Willowbrook. Our vacation included our family of 4 with 2 teenage kids, another family with teenagers, and my wife's aunt and friend. Willowbrook was the perfect destination for this "extended family". Close to everything, yet a quite retreat to come back to at the end of the day. Hiking Acadia, swimming in the freshwater pond up the road, hiking nearby trails, kayaking Somes Sound....it's all easy from this centrally located property. The location is great, the property itself is exceptional. Plenty of room for all of our guests. But best of all, it really felt like being at home. A very historic, well-appointed home. This is not a typical rental, filled with cheap furnishings. This home is a piece of history, and has been maintained as such by its owners. It was a real treat and honor to be able to stay at a home with such obvious character and so well taken care of. Diana is charming and anxious to make sure we had everything we needed. The closest thing I can compare this to is staying at a historic inn, one where we were the only guests. An incredible rental that I would recommend in the highest terms.

What an incredible week we had at Willowbrook. Even with the heat wave, the house stayed cool. The kitchen had everything we needed. As stated, the beds were extremely comfortable and the towels and linens were luxurious. We loved the views! We put all the lawn furniture on the side lawn and used this space as our gathering area. Every morning we had our coffee here and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the loons and watched the seals swim across the sound. On our last morning we even got to watch an eagle hang out at the Somesville Library. I love this "quiet" part of the island. It was great to check out Bar Harbor and Acadia Park, but it was lovely to be able to come home to Willowbrook. And, yes, it was nice to run into the owner, Diane, at the local market in Southwest Harbor. Be sure to visit Beech Farm for local produce, and on Wednesday mornings, make sure to get in line early for homebaked pies at the church down the road! I can't wait to come back!

We enjoyed our stay -all 11 of us.The whole family( grandparents to toddlers ) had plenty of room and privacy. The location was charming and easily accessible to all our activities. The beds and linens were of good quality and the home was clean. There were many dining choices nearby and Acadia Park was outstanding. We would recommend Willowbrook to our family and friends.

We just spent a lovely week at the Somes House.....what a gem! The beds, bedding, towels, and pillows were luxurious, and the home is a trip into the past of the best of Maine. Nothing was forgotten in supplying the home with everything we needed. Our last evening was a sit-down dinner for 8 in a grand dining room with lobsters, fresh corn, and great friends. The "Somesville Library" across the street even let me check out the local must reads ---- The Secret Life of Lobsters, and the Lobster Chronicles. The Somes House owners Diane and Win were great and were in the area to make sure our visit was memorable. Be sure to go to the Beech Hill organic farmers' market nearby and the Consignment Shop down the street. Acadia National Park is amazing, and go to Jordan Pond for popovers and lobster stew! We will be back!
