Location: Bailey Island, Portland & Casco Bay, Maine, USA (15 Minutes from Cook's Corner and Brunswick)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-6)
Located on the ocean side of Bailey Island just a short walk from the historic Cribstone Bridge, this house has open ocean views with a protected cove perfect for kayaking. The huge 400+ sq. ft. deck leads to a large private lawn and rocky beach.
Relax on the large 400 square foot deck overlooking your own private piece of the Atlantic Ocean. Watch the fishermen pull in their daily catch and the sailboats go by. If you’re lucky you might even catch the seals sunning themselves on nearby Ragged or Pond Islands.
Leave the sliding glass doors open at night and let the sea air and sound of the waves lull you to sleep.
If you want to get your exercise in during vacation, you can explore the island by foot or by kayak. It’s a gorgeous (but somewhat hilly) jog or walk from the cribstone bridge at one end of the island to Land’s End at the other. It’s about 4.5 miles there and back. There are plenty of calm, scenic coves to explore by kayak, starting with Mingo Cove right outside your front door. H2O Outfitters is a short walk over the bridge to Orr’s Island, and offers kayak rentals and lessons.
There’s an LCD cable TV with dvd player if that’s your speed, but it’s right next to the 8 foot sliding glass doors looking out to the ocean so you may not be able to focus on what’s on TV. Grill some amazing local seafood on the gas grill on the deck as you enjoy the peace and tranquility of island life, Maine style. Eat, drink, and gaze at the water – either inside at the dining table or at the full-sized table on the deck facing the water. The kitchen is fully equipped with brand new appliances including a full gas range and oven, microwave, toaster and full fridge, and of course a lobster pot.
If you’d rather not cook yourself, take a walk over to the famous Cook’s Lobster House and enjoy their local seafood. It’s a great restaurant with water views from every side, and a cool outdoor bar if you want something more casual. For breakfast we love the blueberry pancakes at Giant Steps Café up the road.
Our rocky beach just beyond the lawn is great for kayaking, rowing, fishing, wading, and searching for treasures in the tide pools. If you’d like to swim at a rare sandy beach, then check out Cedar Beach just across the cove. It’s just a quick drive or walk up the road, or a paddle across.
