The home is located only 80 miles from the Managua Airport on the beautiful South West Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. The home is located in a large, family owned gated area that provides maximum privacy and security.
The coastal area around Gigante is world famous for surfing, but fishing and snorkeling are also excellent in the area. Several surf breaks and an excellent snorkeling bay are within walking distance of Casa Amarilla. If you'd like to explore more of the coast, boat rentals for surfing, snorkeling, fishing and sightseeing excursions are available in Gigante. Hiking and nature watching are also excellent in the area within easy walking access. See the website on this ad for lots more information about Casa Amarilla and the area.
The house is 190 square meters (2100 sq ft) with a large veranda (440 ft2)overlooking the beach and ocean. Casa Amarilla offers three bedroom accomodations when the owners are in the US and two bedroom accomodations when the owners are in Nicaragua. The home has a large master bedroom with a master bath. All three bedrooms are equipped with very quiet "split unit" air conditioners and ceiling fans. The Master bedroom is furnished with a Queen Size bed and the Guest bedroom is furnished with a King Size bed that can be converted to two twin beds. And the "Owner's Suite" has a King Size bed that can be converter to two twin size beds. Additional sleeping accomodations for children can be made in the large living room by using two very comfortable twin size air beds. The home has a very spacious kitchen, dining room and living room. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, refrigerator, microwave, cooking and eating utensils. The main sala, dining area and kitchen have a cathedral ceiling with four ceiling fans. The house is elevated 3 ½ meters off the ground, providing panoramic view of the beach and breathtaking sunsets! The large area underneath the house contains the "Owner's Suite", Manager's quarters and bodega with the remaining area paved for vehicle parking and equipped with hammocks to relax in the shade. The Manager's quarters downstairs is where our full time manager lives. Daily house cleaning is provided and change of linens and towels every other day is also provided. Beach towels and purified water for drinking are also provided.
One big advantage of staying at Casa Amarilla is that four very good restaurants are within 200 meters of the front gate. Casa Amarilla is equipped with a full kitchen and there is a stocking service available for the home. But if you want the occasional (or frequent) convenience of excellent meals without the work, the restaurants are just steps away! Some of the restaurants offer Nicaraguan Food and two restaurants offer American food. See the website on this ad for more information.
A full time manager who speaks fluent English is on site and can help you with any questions during your stay. There is also a night watchman within the compound for additional security. Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2009
Ben and Ofelia live part of the year in Nicaragua and part of the year in the US. They have four grown children and one grandson. They both love spending their free time outdoors enjoying the natural environment, particularly in Nicaragua. They also enjoy traveling to other countries where they can find natural environments, good food and wonderful people.
Why the Owner Chose Bahia Gigante
Ben & Ofelia have built Casa Amarilla to serve families and couples who are looking for pristine beaches, warm Pacific water and opportunities to explore one of the world’s most beautiful and uncrowded coasts. Casa Amarilla was built to provide the comforts of civilization on the remote and private south west Nicaraguan coast.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Casa Amarilla offers a unique opportunity to experience Nicaraguan culture in a small working fishing village. You can enjoy the ocean, beaches, surf, fishing and wildlife within a community that depends on nature for their livelihood. There are lots of places in the world where you can isolate yourself from the locals by staying in tourist centers full of North Americans and Europeans. Casa Amarilla provides the opportunity to experience the culture and people as well as the landscape.

Casa Amarilla and Playa Gigante are the epitome of a relaxing family vacation. The beach was lovely and the surf calm enough for our three boys (3,7,9). When we wanted to watch the surfers and play in the tidal pools, it was a short walk through the village to a magnificent uninhabited beach. Casa Amarilla was great. The open living/dining area with several ceiling fans was fantastic and it was amazing to fall asleep to the sound of the waves breaking, and awaken to the sounds of the local roosters (though a little earlier than I would have liked). The owners were on site while we were there which was a big plus. They are warm, welcoming, gracious hosts who helped us tremendously both during the planning stages of our trip and while we were there. They are true pillars of the community and were hard at work building a playground for the local children while we were there. We just saw photos of the finished project and my kids can't wait to go back and play on the swings and see-saw. The house manager, Jenny was kind and somehow always magically appeared to clean the kitchen, sweep and make our beds when we were out. There was a TV and DVD player with a large collection of films, many family friendly which was nice when the kids wanted to watch a movie before bed or needed a break from the beach during the height of mid-day sun. The village of Gigante, while poor, was full of friendly people who always greeted us with genuine warmth. While it was key to have a kitchen while traveling with three picky eaters, the three restaurants that are on the beach were great when we wanted to grab a bite, have a drink, hang out on the hammocks, or chat with other visitors. Dave at Chelle's was a sweetheart who helped set up horseback riding for my eldest son. I highly recommend a fishing trip with Don Fidel. It was pricey, but the joy on my kids' faces as they reeled in tuna (and the joy on my face when I got to eat it) was well worth it. Going for an afternoon walk to see the Howler Monkeys is also a must. If you are looking for lots of activities to fill up your day, this might not be the place for you, but if you are looking for a low key, low tech, relaxing vacation, this is nirvana. Our biggest activity was building sandcastles in front of Pie Gigante and then sitting with a cold drink waiting for the tide to come in and wash it away. Memories to last a lifetime.
Owner response:Chris & JoAnn, Thanks so much for the review. Ofelia and I hope you and your family return to Playa Gigante. Jenny said that she really enjoyed you and your children. Jenny also thanks you very much for the tip. Ben

I think at first I was nervous about going to Nicaragua with my friend, as I had heard it could be dangerous for women travelers. But I like a challenge, loved Costa Rica and had seen beautiful pictures on Ben's site and others of the beaches, the countryside, etc. Now, Nicaragua is absolutely one of my most favorite places I have been in the world. The beaches are stunning, the people are beautiful and amazing and the complete naturalness and lack of commercialization is soul satisfying. Ben and Ophelia were absolutely awesome and generous, and Jenny and Julio who work for them are lovely people.I rent through VRBO for just about every trip I take, but have never felt such hospitality as I did from Ben and Ophelia. Ben even went snorkeling and surfing with us! Invited us to a great party at their place and I learned a lot about the country's history and possible future from talking with them. It was like being there with friends, and it never felt forced or for the sake of politeness. They genuinely love their home, and from my view, each other which was great to be around. The house. If you are reading this, and want to go to Playa Gigante to surf, swim, read, relax, whatever.... this is the house to do it from. Totally safe, secure... gorgeous. I slept like baby in the master bedroom with the sound of the ocean and breezes blowing through. I do a considerable amount of cooking the kitchen was everything I could hope for. Beautiful dishes, large stove and fridge, sunny and beautifully tiled. The space is large, breezy, bright and comfortable. The front desk has stunning views of the ocean and the unbelievable sunsets. There are 2 large bathrooms and the showers are as big as my entire apartment in NY. We bought fresh squirming fish in the morning as the boats came in and the fruit and peppers were bursting when the trucks came through town with fresh veg. When I didn't feel like cooking, Pili and John who run Restaurant Pie Gigante 10 steps away from the house made some of the most amazing food (she's Basque) like fresh beet salads, potato and onion tortilla (frittata), fresh bread and bruschetta, pasta, fish, coconut pancakes, anything you want she'll make special if you ask a day in advance. One of the best times I've ever had, so don't try and rent Casa Amarilla during the last week of March 2011 because I'll be there again!
