We had company from out of town and wanted to spend Christmas skiing, relaxing and enjoying our time together. Part of our group arrived at the Hideout on 12-21-12 (with food and enough equipment to last until spring). The rest arrived 12-22-12 after a long day of getting snowed in at Kirkwood. They started out bright & early Sat morning; it had been snowing heavily for 2 days. They reached Kirkwood Resort at about 10am. The road ended up closing ahead and behind them so they ordered food, beverages and hunkered down for a while. The spur ended up opening that afternoon around 3:30pm and they were in line waiting to finish their journey. Once we all made it in and settled down for a ham/turkey dinner it became clear that we made the right decision on where spend Christmas 2012! Tom & BJ are wonderful hosts, we enjoyed talking with them about building the Hideout as well as how to plan activities between the 6 feet of snow that fell the week we were there! There were a couple of days we just stayed indoors, baking, napping, puzzlilng, gaming and, of course, eating/drinking. The surrounding wilderness is beautiful and peaceful. Pretty sure this is about as close to heaven as one can get without actually leaving this world. Thanks to BJ & Tom for a fabulous week with our family.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, tourists without a car, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway, people with disabilities.

We didn't have to look very long to find a wedding site, the Hideout won us over easily and is hands-down the best location we could have ever imagined for our wedding. We knew a late October wedding was a gamble with the weather, but somehow, despite the 3 feet of snow that came that week, BJ and Tom got everyone in and out okay and we had a BEAUTIFUL white wedding that I don't think anyone present will ever forget. Reasons why you should get married at the Hideout: 1) It's amazing, beautiful, unforgettable and intimate, and you and your guests will be talking about it for a lifetime. 2) BJ and Tom: Hardworking, kind, pleasant and very reasonable. They will do everything in their power to get the job done even in the worst of circumstances... I think my wedding topped all the rest in this department, so I'm a credible resource. They were also incredibly flexible and allowed us to use the Lodge (living room, deck and loft) to seat our 110 guests. It worked out great since the deck is right off of the living room and the loft is just above. It was so beautiful, and much nicer than the large tent would have been that we wanted to bring in. Everyone that sat outside on the deck by the lake thought they were the best seats in the house and thought it was the most picturesque wedding EVER. 3) The Saloon: It was so much fun to have access to this awesome building. We used this for our dancing reception in a pinch since there was 3 ft of snow outside. The guests LOVED it. 4) The Ambiance: words can't express this one, but I'm amazed that their family was able to build this place on this amazing piece of property. All the love that went into it can be felt. 5) The Decor/Rooms: Each room has it's own charm and are SO lovely. 6) Ease for Catering: Depending on where you have your reception (outside, saloon, or lodge), there are kitchens for the caterer, making it incredibly easy for them. 7) Space for the wedding party and/or family to stay the weekend with you. The day of the wedding goes by way too fast... why not enjoy it over the whole weekend. We also did a brunch the day after that all the guests were invited to, in addition to a rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. It gave us ample time to spend with people. And if you have people okay with camping there is ample space and outdoor bathrooms! Don't delay... now that the Hideout secret has leaked out it gets booked fast! -Becky and JustinRecommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers.

Yes it snowed almost three feet of snow from Monday to Thursday morning. What a scramble to save the wedding. The Big Tent couldn't be brought in. The Father of the Bride (me) and the Groom got to know each other so much better as we shoveled snow for two days at the wedding site. We had to do a 180 degree change on everything it seemed. But Tom and BJ pulled us through along with the invited guests to pull it off. A wedding that all guests and the owners will never forget! Tom and BJ, thanks for all you did under very difficult conditions. Tom brought in a Snow Cat and BJ let us move furniture all around to accommodate us. They worked day and night to help with everything. And the wedding went off without a hitch with beautiful snow powder all over the place in about 58 degree weather! The Hideout just great and beautiful! .Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We scheduled this facility for our small family wedding during the month of July 2012. Upon coming over the hill and seeing the lodge on the lake, it took everyones breath away. I don't believe the pictures on vrbo do this place justice. Upon our arrival we were greeted by BJ (the owner) and she walked us up the the lodge. The facility was clean, well maintained and had all the things we needed for our event. There were robes folded on the bed and a welcome message on the chalk board (nice little touches). During the day of our wedding, BJ there was there once again catering to our needs! In the evening, everyone piled into the 30 person hot tub and had a relaxing evening. Everything went perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! I would HIGHLY recommend this facility to friends, family and anyone else who wants to get away and have a quiet and relaxing time. We will definitely be scheduling another stay there in the future for a family reunion!!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

The setting is gorgeous. The lodge is to die for. We should all be so lucky to have a home in the mountains that depicts such cohesiveness with the environment. BJ & Tom are one of the best hosts I have ever dealt with. Whatever you needed, they would try their best to accomplish. I was a guest and a caterer for a wedding and the kitchen facilities were terrific to put together appetizers for a wedding of 300. The saloon is a perfect place for a party and party we did. The bunkhouse was the staging area for the dinner caterers and the main outdoor dining area was perfect for guests to enjoy a early evening dinner while viewing the granite of the Sierras. The dancefloor was jammed and the surrounding area was beautiful for an event or just an intimate party area for a few friends (20-40) or more.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway, people with disabilities.

My son and my new daughter in-law's wedding was so wonderful, we couldn't pick a more beautiful place to have this wedding. After spending Thurs thru Monday it was hard to go back to reality. Tom & BJ Hoover were so easy to work with everything went so smoothly and if we had questions or needed help they were there. The lodge is unbelievable a lot of heart and sole went into building it and so comfortable and relaxing, perfect place for friends and family to gather along with a whole lot of laughter! Can't forget the saloon.......Wow! it was too much fun! Wedding site was awesome, what more could anyone ask for! Anyone thinking of getting Hitched, this is it you won't be disappointed!!!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway, people with disabilities.

I have been performing wedding ceremonies in the State of California for over 15 years and this venue was the most beautiful, the most unique, the most impressive I have ever been to! I'm hoping to convince my family to spend a week here one day! A tremendous heartfelt thank you to BJ and Tom for having the foresight to build such an amazing Lodge so that our group of 5 families could come and spend the week and begin a lovely tradition. A beautiful property nestled 15 minutes away from Kirkwood ski hill, we found so many exciting ways to spend our time. The listings description doesn't do the property justice and everything was as stated and better. The snow-cat ride to and from the Lodge every morning and evening was great fun. Tobogganing, snow shoeing, cross country ski and ski touring are just out the back door. The Lodge and Saloon are thoughtfully put together with both buildings having many areas to sit, lay back, play games, read a book or just relax with a glass of wine BJ and Tom took care of our every need, and Tom's fun stories and easy manner added to evening fun. We look forward to seeing you again next year.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

We spent a week at the Hideout together with a party of several other friends and families, and had what I would call the best winter vacation ever. From day 1 Tom and BJ took care of us as if we'd been old friends and took care of everybody and everything. Amazing. We also loved the stories about how they built the house and the many funny incidents they witnessed over the years. That's worth a book guys! The lodge itself is nothing short of stunning, whether it be on the inside or outside. I guarantee that you will spend half a day just exploring the house and surroundings. My favorite place is the large kitchen and the living space next to the enormous fireplace (that we kept going basically 24/7). You know that you are in good hands if your landlord WANTS you to burn as much wood as possible ;-) Sitting on the porch overlooking the lake works too, especially in the warm afternoon sun. Or try the pool table in the adjacent Saloon. If all that gets too boring and you don't feel like skiing there are great snow shoeing and sledding opportunities right at the doorstep. My personal favorite: try sledding down the last hill of the access road. I could go on and on... Suffice to say there was not one minute of boredom and we already decided that we must come back. Tom, BJ, thank you for a fantastic week! Adrian, Birgit & LeonardRecommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers.

We can't believe how amazing it was to have our wedding at the Hideout. It's so beautiful, Tom and BJ are so friendly and helpful, and there's just tons of space. We were able to to spend much more time with our guests because many of them stayed on site at the lodge or camping. Tom, BJ, and all their family and friends had to work SO hard (literally day and night and gobs of money) to get the road opened for us, and that was in July! And in the end, with mandatory 4wd to get in, most of the men at the wedding thought it was the best part! A lot of us even enjoyed the beautiful walk. One piece of advice... if you're looking for a limo entrance, high heels all around, and formal entertaining, this is not the place for you. However, if you love natural beauty, have a bit of a sense of adventure, and privacy, GET MARRIED AT THE HIDEOUT! You won't regret it.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
The uniqueness of this property is that it's so private, so beautiful, and yet so close to all the great things the High Sierras has to offer. Everyone is always amazed that this place is even there, but move amazed that it is open to the public to use.
