Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1995
We grew up on the New Jersey shore and settled there. We love Vermont and we enjoyed all the ski areas in southern Vermont. We finally built a true log cabin in southern Vermont.
Why the Owner Chose Chester
We built a log cabin in 1995. The location is outstanding. It is secluded but close to the town of Chester and near the major town of Springfield. Is on a historic dirt road that has been in place for over 200 years. Green Mountain Tpk. The road has a historic covered bridge that goes over the Williams river. Outstanding hiking, biking and river activities. Chester is centrally located to it all! The Weston Playhouse, Vermont's oldest professional theatre company in Vermont hosts live performances, plays and musicals and is only minutes away! The nearby town of Bellows Falls hosts many of Southern Vermont's summer events .
Love sports?
There is boating, canoeing, kayaking and swimming on the Connecticut River. Enjoy hiking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and golfing all available in the Okemo Valley area! Unique summer sports and activities include horseback riding in Woodstock, Orvis fly fishing in Manchester and hot air ballooning in Quechee. During winter months you'll find downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
The cabin sits facing south on a bluff overlooking the Williams river with rapids directly below the house. A lower deck sits on top of the rapids with a view of the mountains and sunsets. The river is excellent for fishing for brook trout and has a five foot swimming hole at the end of the property. The lower and upper decks are excellent places to watch the sunset with a beverage and listen to the sounds of the rapids.
Love to explore?
The historic towns of Woodstock, Grafton, Walpole, Weston, Brattleboro and Manchester are just a few of the most beautiful and scenic places that are just a short drive away.
Love to shop?
The famous Vermont Country Store is just 4 miles away! The town of Manchester with all of its incredible outlets such as the Gap, Bose, Anichini, Crabtree & Evelyn, J. Crew and Polo just to name a few is 30 minutes away.
Love to Antique?
The Stone House Antique Center with over 80 dealers is great for fun antiquing is just down the street! There are all kinds of auctions, antique shows and fun eclectic flea markets to be found almost every weekend in Southern Vermont. The Brimfield Antique Show, put on three times a year, is one of the largest antique shows in the U.S

Wonderful retreat in scenic Vermont

My boyfriend and I rented this fabulous cabin for a week in June. We loved our stay! The house has everything you need for a relaxing, comfortable vacation. It is creatively decorated and features a lot of nice personal touches throughout. Although there were only 2 of us, the house has enough beds to accomodate several people. Outside, there's a nice deck with a large grill, and several chairs and a porch swing. Further across the yard is a fire which was nice to hang out by and make S'Mores at night. There is also a set of stairs on the edge of the property that descends down to a beautiful running river. You can fly fish for trout in the river, and there is calm area where you can swim, as well. The location (Chester, VT) is about 10 miles from Springfield. It serves as an excellent base for day trips to Manchester, Woodstock, Burlington, etc. Locally, we enjoyed a nice dinner at a Scottish pub in town, and often bought deli items at Lisias, which has good food at reasonable prices. There are also several nice antique stores in the area, which were great fun to explore. The abundance of scenic drives in the area provided us with several days of spectacular sightseeing - I think we put 900 miles on the car just driving around Vermont. The cabin would serve as an excellent base for winter activities, too, since there are an abundance of ski resorts and snowmobile trails in central Vermont. And I can imagine how beautiful the area is in the fall when the foliage is at its peak. But no matter what time of year you visit, this cabin is a perfect retreat for you and your family. Clean, comfortable, quiet and cozy with all the ammenities of home. I happily recommend this property to all. Thanks Roy!

We were 3 adults from 55 to 83 needing 3 bedrooms and the cabin was just perfect for us & our 3 dogs. Beautifully furnished, well equipped, we had everything we needed. Meals on the deck, a nightly fire in the pit, a meditation spot on the lower deck, who could ask for anything more. There were wonderful places for my daughter to do 20-30 mile bike rides, back roads for me and the dogs to walk on and comfortable outdoor seating where my older friend could relax and read. You could not go wrong with this fabulous home. Thank you Wilkins family for allowing us to share it for a time.

We are a family of 8 with kids ranging in ages from 4 to 16. The cabin was PERFECT!! Not only was the cabin itself family friendly, but the river and the outside firepit were special treats. The town of Chester is close by and a nice place to visit/shop (antiques,candy,syrup...). The cabin is conveniently located so that it is easy enough to visit other places in VT or the surrounding states if you so choose. If not the cabin is quite sufficient by itself for a nice quiet get away. Thanks Roy for sharing this place with us!!

This place was almost too good to be true. If you were any closer to the Williams RIver, you'd be in it. You are so close to mountains, have a really nice town (Chester) and wouldn't have to see a soul if you didn't want to. The home sits on the nicest lot in the area, the decorations and the layout couldn't be better. We will be frequenting here many more times. Make sure you check out the Scottish pub in Chester as well as the deli. Thanks Roy!

This is a great find for a Fall getaway -- and can't imagine how beautiful it must be in winter and summer. The cabin has literally everything for a relaxing stay, and Roy was responsive to all my questions. It's far enough to be feel "away from it all" but close enough to see all the great sites and have some wonderful meals. We enjolyed sitting on the deck and listening to the relaxing rapids. Felt like we were in a postcard. Highly recommend!

We had a great time at the Wilkins Cabin and would definitely consider going back. River was a little rough for the kids (5yrs and 10yrs) but my husband and dog could not stay away from the it. We were disappointed to find out that there was no fire wood for the camp fire. We didn't let that stop us we mananged to start the fire out of the branches we found and still got our smores in. The house was as expected and very nice. The perfect get away we needed. Thanks for sharing your home.

We enjoyed a wonderful week at this beautiful and relaxing cabin. Everything we needed was there: fully stocked kitchen, comfortable places for reading, away from the main floor t.v. room, great beds and the sounds of the Williams River and Green Mountain Flyer train. Our dog also felt quite at home with a yard and country roads to explore. We look forward to returning.
