The quality and workmanship of this cottage were beyond our expectations. It was so comfortable and excellently located. We loved the Kona area. We would highly recommend this to friends and family members and would stay again on a return to the Big Island.

The well designed simple layout and quality of material and craftsmanship made this cottage a very restful place. Unfortunately it rained almost everyday, and did not get to enjoy the lanai, and was very chilly at night. Though, liked the privacy and the quiet (except for the roosters) surrounding. Ideal for a single or a couple, and for a longer stay. The photos did not do justice to the place. For the first timer, it would have ben helpful to know ahead of time that the parking space is for the farm house as well (a little marker will do). Would love to return when it's not so wet and for a longer stay.

We enjoyed our stay in the beautiful cottage. The space was well-maintained and thoughtfully stocked with kitchen equipment for those who enjoy cooking. We were able to pick fresh fruit from trees on the property to add to our meals. The design of the cottage with sliding windows and doors allowed you to be a part of nature or cozy indoors when the rain was pouring. The property has lovely landscaping both for privacy and view. We would recommend this rental to friends and family that like to be a short drive to the beaches, but appreciate a slower pace at the end of the day. Truly, a reviving hillside getaway.

This cottage in a remote hilltop location on a coffee farm is away from all the hustle and bustle in Kailua-Kona Town, and yet only about a 10 to 15 minute drive to shopping at Costco, Safeway, etc. Motter was a delightful host, and she gave us a number of good suggestions for restaurants and beaches. We used the cottage as a base for exploring the Kona coast, and always returned in the late PM to relax and have dinner on the Lanai. The cottage, kitchen, etc. were generally well equipped including things like Wi-Fi; the main negative from our standpoint was the lack of a freezer or icemaker. Overall, the description and photos do give an accurate picture of this rental, and we would (and did) recommend it to a friend.

We loved our stay here. Sitting on the beautiful lanai, watching the birds in the morning, picking oranges from the tree just steps from the front door...it made for a very special vacation. Mo, the owner was helpful and great at giving suggestions for day trips. You have everything you need..a modestly equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and even WiFi! The location might be a little remote for some, (a bit of a drive to the beach) but we loved the tranquility of it. The only suggestion would be to somehow make the directions a little clearer once you turn down the final road. In the dark this place is difficult to find. Other than that, a very magical place!

The cottage is high in the hills in a shaded spot which does not get morning sun. The open ceilings w screened, not glass windows meant very cold nights & mornings (50's). There is a 2 drawer refrigerator & no freezer. The kichen has very basic utensils. The eating table is outdoors. We had to buy toilet paper & paper towels. A rat gnawed the avocado we left on the kitchen counter & the owner arranged for someone to set a trap which caught the critter the following night. This location is rural & there are plenty of roosters which start @ 4:30am. We did like being away from the downtown hustle bustle & appreciated the views when driving to & from the cottage. The washer/dryer were a big plus. The size was ok for 2 people & probably would be more comfortable during warmer months.

Owner response: The cottage is at 1200 feet above sea level. The elelvation provides for day-time temperatures around 72 and night termperatures range from 55-62. In the winter it may get a bit cooler at night. So bring a sweater or light jacket. The kitchen is fully provisioned with cooking and eating gear. The table and chairs are on the covered lanai for outdoor dining. Sorry about the critter (a rare occurance) that ate your avocado and I'm happy that he was promply trapped and removed by Kelly, the manager. I'm glad you enjoyed my farm and a sample of the rural life-style of the Big Island.

If you've decided on the Big Island as your destination (great beaches, snorkeling, volcanic activity, Hawai'ian heritage sites), consider this "coffee belt" location near Holualoa. The choice between a beach location and the uplands depends on your personal preferences. A main draw for us was snorkeling--the drive down to beaches takes just a few minutes. Upland is cooler, with refreshing ocean breezes. Being on a small working coffee farm was a plus for us. We were there for the last picking of this year's harvest--all done by hand, thus accounting for the high value of the prized 100% Kona coffee beans, which owner Mo Snell provided us for fresh grinding and brewing. The property has two structures: the main house or farm house, and the cottage. While they are very near each other, the lush foliage and architectural design provide privacy for parties in each. We were in the cottage, and the main house was occupied by Mo for part of our stay and by other guests for the other part. The house has views looking down to the ocean, while the cottage is nestled in luxuriant tropical plants. In addition to coffee trees, there are numerous fruit trees with fruit available for the picking in season. The gorgeous cottage has modern architectural features influenced by ancient Hawai'ian designs that you can see in places like the City of Refuge structures--high peaked copper-roofed ceiling and exposed o'hia wood rafters. It is evident that the late architect/owner, Chris Snell, poured his expertise and his heart passion into the design and furnishings. The building is built from sustainably harvested o'hia wood from trees downed in a storm on a friend's property, with teak cabinets. One wall is lava rock, and there are chests of drawers of wood and split bamboo. The huge expanse of window looks out onto a covered lanai and can be opened for breeze or closed to keep cozy. The lovely bathroom has a tiled floor, lava rock wall, large shower, o'hia wood shelves, and copper sink. The rooms--main room with bed, kitchen, bathroom--are all spacious and airy. This is one of the nicest places I have stayed in Hawai'i. Before Mo left, she gave us tips on beaches, restaurants, and other sites. We loved the shallow snorkeling beach Kahalu'u, where besides seeing tons of colorful fish, I followed a large turtle for 15 tranquil minutes. We took Mo's recommendations for restaurants Island Lava Java and Holuakoa Gardens, both with stellar results!

Description was accurate and location was convenient to Kona. Being at a higher elevation was beneficial as the temperature was slightly lower than at sea level in Kona, however the cottage is very protected so the breezes were not that evident. Also, there is no view of the ocean or coast from the cottage. The cottage was clean and well maintained and the owner was responsive to our requests. I would only recommend this property for two people, and would not hesitate to recommend to family or friends. Note that there is no iron, ironing board or hair dryer, bring your own. This is not a negative as the listing does not claim these are provided, this is just provided as information to the traveller. Highly recommend ADVENTUREXRAFTING for a snorkeling trip. The captain and crew are excellent hosts, they only take a max of 20 people which lends to a more intimate experience.

The Coffee Farm Cottage is the perfect retreat after a long day of sightseeing. We enjoyed the quiet, peaceful setting, and of course, the beautiful architecture of the cottage. Very comfortable. Enjoyed sitting on the lanai in the evening. And I have to mention the shower! Amazing. We'll be back! C Dwyer & D Mandic

A very nice place to stay and relax. Beautiful architecture contributed to a relaxing and peaceful vacation. Easy to get to shopping. We spent 2 weeks on a great vacation. The folks caring for the property were as nice as can be. This was our first time using Vrbo. The Snell family made renting easy and comfortable. A wonderful artist community just down the road with museum quality artwork. In fact they offer a 2 week class to build ukuleles.

Our stay at your lovely cottage could not have been better. We enjoyed all the comfort and beautiful details. I loved the enormous windows that opened up the entire wall to the outdoors, the cool breezes and the beautiful gardens. What a magical place! We would definitely return.

We just completed our week exploring the incomparable island of Hawaii from the Snell cottage. At the end of each day, after enjoying the diverse environments of the island, it is difficult to adequately describe the peace and relaxation of anticipating our afternoon and evening at the cottage. We have rarely encountered a holiday in which the room became as important in our stay as the surrounding scenery, but this is your treat in this location. Add in the tropical fruit, the exotic chickens (that's Hawaii), and the friendly but also completely non-intrusive host, and this is paradise fulfilled. Thank you for the lovely stay.

We LOVED staying at the Snell coffee cottage. It was totally our style. Warm, lush, tropical setting, private and beautifully designed in every aspect. A pleasant escape from the sticky heat of Kona, yet only a short drive from town for shops, restaurants and beaches. We felt like we were in Costa Rica- parrots flying overhead, avocados falling from the trees, roosters crowing, afternoon downpours enjoyed from the covered lanai on those fabulous loungers. Even when you're inside it feels like you're're outside- those incredible sliding doors that make the house feel much larger than it is. Nice high ceilings, beautiful construction, stonework, copper hardware and clean little touches everywhere- down to the cool coffee cups. Our 2-year old son loved it too- wandering around the garden, playing on the lanai. We used one of the fold-out sleeping pads for him, and it worked great. Our only recommendations- a good reading light would be nice by the bedside table, and the shower curtain hardware was kind of a pain- It kept getting stuck and falling off. But those are not biggies. We loved your place and would totally recommend it for EVERYONE!!!

My husband and I absolutely loved this special retreat....we felt like it was our own litle hideaway. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and it was so very peaceful......when the roosters weren't crowing in the early morning. Our only complaint was the lighting was not bright enough for our older eyes....but a small price to pay for the quiet solitude. We also liked being out of town and yet close enough to go everywhere we wanted to go. Fabulous meals at the Holualoa Cafe and friendly people at the coffee house. We will definitely return to this place!

The photos do not do this cottage justice. It is spacious, clean and beautiful. The location is nice with easy access into town and the beach without being in the thick of noise and traffic. We loved picking fruit and eating out on the lanai. Hope to return sometime.

What an awesome place! I really enjoyed staying there and so did my 9 year old son, Ellison. We loved the jungle sounds, the garden, the fruit trees, and the whole feel of the cottage. I wish I could have stayed longer. I will definitely recommend it to my friends and family (already have) and would like to try and get back next year sometime. Mahalo! My compliments to you and your husband on the architecture, construction and furnishings - it was the best place I have ever stayed on vacation. I really like the low impact aspects, too (am an environmental engineer - water resources). Thank you for allowing me to share some of your special place.
