Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1987

A crazed entrepreneur from NYC, who grew up mostly in Florida, I built my house in 1987. It's kind of like a beach house in the mountains, in many ways. I needed the sun, the light, the land, the trees and the views. A photographer and painter both educationally and in my downtime, I needed to create a haven for renewal of my soul and spirit, which this house, and its environs offers, just 2 1/2 to 3 hours from the city. Many friends followed me up to the mountaintop, and bought or built, and I've ended up with rich community up there...including many fellows at Windham Mountain, where my family and I ski. I love it so much upstate that I've moved now to the Hudson Valley (my husband commutes to the city), and I'm now renting out my house to other fellow seekers of refuge, because I love the place, have put my soul into the shaping the land, my children grew up escaping into nature there and we are just not ready to give it up. We'd rather share the good karma of the house with good guests, who will benefit in return.

Why the Owner Chose Windham

Windham - (the Hamlet of Maplecrest is in the town of Windham) is the ideal year round getaway from NYC. In the winter, Windham - and Hunter nearby - offer the best skiing in NY State short of Lake Placid, which is very far. And Windham Mountain is an unbelievably well run place, constantly evolving with more offerings, and everything about it is top notch. Spring, Summer and Fall offer each their own glories, including but limited to abundant golf options, endless hiking, biking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, gardening, antique hunting, flea markets, several lakes for swimming & boating - and there are creeks and other magical watering holes - and the summer also offers a calendar filled of cultural events, day and night. There's much to discover and uncover in the Catskills, with little to no commercial aggressiveness.

The Unique Benefits of this House

The view, the view, the view...and a giant deck to hang out on and suck it in. Adjacent to forests, in the spring, summer and fall, when you are quiet at the house it's like being in an aviary. The house is great for entertaining, and I've done tons of that! I also golf, ski, hike and swim a lot. CD Lane Park, a town park and lake feed by a large stream, is a mile from the house. We walk, ride or drive and hang out there. And Sugar Maples, an active arts colony, is also right there, at the bottom of the hill.

    • I have spent a number of weekends and holidays at this wonderful house. It's truly a home, too. The view is fantastic; sitting on the porch in the morning with coffe/tea/breakfast or just sitting is a beautiful, calming experience. The bed is incredibly comfortable and all the amenities are great (and in good order). The woman who became my fiancee and I spent a few days there late last summer and we hope that we can go back soon. I highly recommend this haven.

    • My family has used this beautiful house several times since 2003. It has been a great place for us and our kids(now 2 and 6 years old) to rest and get away form the buzz of the city. We love it! Of course the house is very spacious with great bay windows and extraordinary view of the Catskills Mountains, which are always changing. Fantastic in the Fall! I especially love the fire place at night, and the jacuzzi! The living room with a great TV is beautifully carpeted and great for the children who can play, run and fall without any harm. The garden is large and we had a lot of fun with the leaves last Fall. In the winter we could use the sleigh in front of the house which has plenty of space. We also had a fire camp experience with our children. In the winter as a good swiss skier I enjoyed the slopes of Hunter Mountain or with the kids the Windham's ski facilities. It is all at a close distance from the house which is situated inbetween the two sites. As for hiking in the Fall, there is a State Park near by, 10 mns drive.

    • We rented this beautiful home this past winter and immediately fell in love with it. As I repeatedly told the owner, this is such a cozy/comfortable home. My family desperately needed to have a place to get away from the hectic life of our own home. This fit our needs perfectly. The view is absolutely spectacular, the house was always warm, and the neighborhood is beautiful. We spent most of our time skiing at Windham mountain, or entertaining our family and friends at the house. I would highly recommend renting. I can only imagine how beautiful it is there in the spring and summer months.

    • We have stayed here several times, and have always found it to be clean and comfortable and welcoming. The area is gorgeous, of course, and the surrounding area has lots to engage the summer hiker or antique hunter as well as the skier in winter. Recommend it highly.
