Location: North Haven, Mid-Coast & Islands, Maine, USA (North Haven Island is Accessed by Ferry from Rockland)
Accommodations: House, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 8-9)
Keywords: House + Studio
Overlooking picturesque Bartlett's Harbor, this secluded property, set amongst spruce trees, wildflowers, and rocky ledges, includes a small house plus an "in-law cabin." Two parties will enjoy privacy but close proximity: a lawn separates the two buildings by 50'.
Access to two beaches (rocky and pebble) and the pier, along a dirt road, is a two-minute walk. The rental includes shared use of a rowboat and the pier.
The Barnacle proper has 3 small bedrooms (2 BRs have a twin, 1 BR has a full) plus a loft (double bed) under the eaves (6.5' standing room in center of loft), living/dining area (oak table seats 8) with wood-burning stove, kitchen (sink, gas stove, fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, but no dishwasher), bathroom with shower, and deck. The stairs are ladder-like!
The "in-law cabin" is a grey-shingled one-room studio built in about 1985, with a comfy double bed, kitchen area, bathroom with shower and washer-dryer. No stairs.
Both have great views, especially of the sunsets over the Camden Hills.
There's an out-building for storing your bikes, where kids can play cards on rainy days.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1960
Our grandparents bought the Red House (then red) in 1914. He was a sculptor and he joined Bela Pratt, another sculptor, and other artists summering at Bartlett's Harbor. It was a thriving artists' colony, and the bluffs, sunlight, spruce trees, bay and harbors, and wildflower meadows were often depicted in different media. In 1960 our parents bought the neighboring property, The Barnacle, which a Pratt son (who later died in the 1918 influenza epidemic) built on a rock from old barn timbers. My brothers and parents now live in California, and I live in NJ, and we continue to summer on North Haven with our own children.
Why the Owner Chose North Haven
Beach-combing biking painting /drawing /photos (Bartlett's Harbor was a former artists' colony) rowing swimming (water is cold) collecting mussels, crabs
The Unique Benefits of this House
We have many family traditions, such as sailing around the inlets and islands in Penobscot Bay, motoring to Saddle Island for a picnic, climbing to the top of Ames' Peak (close to the town tennis courts) for a nearly 360 degree view, picking wild raspberries and wildflowers, hiking the path through the woods to the other side of the harbor, building morning fires in the fireplace or woodstove to stave off the Maine chill, swimming across the cove to the Pier. We visit the lovely town library every few days, go out to dinner at Coal Wharf, and have at least one lobster dinner at home.

Our summer truly wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Barnacle! We love the quiet and the fabulous views from the deck, especially the sunsets! The house is rustic and cozy, just perfect for us. The studio is perfect for visitors, allowing them to have their own space as well. The Allens are wonderful owners, and do a great job taking care of the property. We are counting down the days till we can come back to the Barnacle.

In recent years I have visited the Allen compound each summer. The view from the deck of the Barnacle house over Bartlett's Harbor and the bay is always entrancing. To watch the sunset from that point is one of life's greatest joys for me--enhanced by the quiet and peacefulness of Bartlett's Harbor. So long as I am able, I shall make a visit to North Haven and Bartlett's Harbor a part of my plans for the summer.
