2011 was our second visit to the Stuart Cottage and we have already signed up to return in 2012. My wife and I have stayed at several other properties on Mount Desert Island and this is by far the best. First and foremost, the location is absolutely spectacular. The scenery is just what you would expect along the Maine coastline. The ocean view is incredible particularly in the late afternoon and as the sun sets. Wildlife is plentiful (loons, dolphin, osprey, bald eagles). We have two small dogs and there are plenty of quiet roads and paths to walk them right next to the property. The house itself is fully stocked and well maintained. For cool nights, the wood burning stove has been replaced with a modern and reliable oil burning space heater. The property is on the quiet side of the island and away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. Acadia National Park is nearby as well as ferry service to Swan's Island and Isleford. 2 grocery stores are located in Southwest Harbor (10 minutes) that took care of most of our needs. Our favorite local restaurants are Thurston's (lobster) and Top of the Hill (prime rib Tuesday/Thursday. We highly recommend this property!Did you find this review helpful? We love the Tremont/W.Tremont area--the "quietside," where we'd stayed for several years. After welcoming a dog into our home we were looking for a new place on the water that allowed pets. The Stuart's cottage was more than big enough for our family of 4 plus dog. (A family of six would easily fit.) The best part was enjoying daily breakfasts and dinners on the porch with fabulous, tranquil views--what we come to Maine for! (I'd been a little worried about the lack of screen on the porch but we were never bothered by bugs (until after sunset).) Our family would walk down to the rocks after dinner, picking blueberries on the way, and enjoy the sunset and beauty of nature all around--including porpoises dancing! Kids appreciated the well-stocked games and adults the well-equipped kitchen. We will definitely come back!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/2

What a wonderful house and location! The layout of the house was perfect for my friends (and their dogs) to share the week. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortably furnished. The house was supplied with just about everything you can ask for: a well stocked pantry, cooking utensils, pots & pans, linens and towels, handy tools, grill, and excellent collection of books. The washer and dryer was very convenient. With the personal decoration and artwork, it seemed as if I was visiting the country home of a good friend or family. Since it was my first visit to Maine, I cannot think of a better introduction to all of its attractions: rocky but gorgeous shoreline, variety of trails for hiking, bicycling, or exploring with dogs, convenient to all attractions, or just enjoying the quiet and magic of nature. The weather was excellent with only a few brief, morning or mid-day showers. The information on local attractions provided in the house binder as well as other literature was very helpful. Everyplace that we explored was exciting: from the shops in Bar Harbor and other towns, view from Cadillac Mountain, the trails in Acadia National Park, especially the trail around Jordan Pond and popovers at the Jordan pond restaurant, hiking the trails along Fernald Cove, playing fetch the stick with dogs (on Bar Island and Seal Cove, and Pretty Marsh) and taking the mail boat to Little Cranberry (Isleford) Island. We also enjoyed the excellent local seafood at Down East Lobster pound, Beales/Captain's Galley, and more upscale dining at Red Sky restaurant. The week was over too soon but I am looking forward to returning next year. Thank you for the chance to enjoy the beauty of the place!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
