The house is right across the highway from the river half way between Mt. Vernon and Dayville.
It is on a slight rise up driveway in a locust tree grove facing south which keeps it cool in the summer and allows sun in the winter. It is in easy driving distance from most all the sites in the basin including the main, south and middle forks of the John Day River, Magone Lake, Murderers Creek, Bear Valley, Strawberry and Aldrich Mts. ridges and lookout towers, Kimberley Orchards, John Day fossil bed museum, several swimming holes, lots of fishing and hunting and hiking and cycling and winter events.
It sleeps 7 with three bedroom with double beds and one with a single.
There are two hammocks and a tree swing and large lazy screened porch for lunches and snoozes and evening beer.
There is dish TV with HBO, CD player and DSL internet & local telephone (let us know if you need either), washer dryer, fridge, freezer, wood and electric cook stoves, wood and oil heating.
The house is totally furnished and equipped. Just bring your suit case and your groceries.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1976
We purchased this property in 1976 after discovering the John Day Valley, per chance, driving in from the East, over Dixie Pass, on our way back across Oregon to Eugene on a quest for a country home. We now live in a different home in the valley and could not bring ourselves to sell the Farm House. It is just to cool and unique and our own family and friends use it periodically.
The Unique Benefits of this Farmhouse
Remote, beautiful and quiet with easy access to the valley in both directions and the world through the internet and TV.
Hunting, fishing, hiking, swimming and hammocking.

We rented this beautiful home to stay in to go elk hunting for the week. It was in November and very cold out. The home was snug as bug. The beds are very comfortable and the shower was a blessing at night after being in the cold all day. I could sense the history in the house just walking around outside. the deer would walk right up to the back window as if to say Hello! My husband and I are defiantly coming back again i hope in the early fall to enjoy that awesome front porch and explore the fossil beds. Thank you for your hospitality!

Our family of six just spent two nights at the farm house while enjoying the beautiful John Day area. The house was a wonderful place for a short family reunion. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is extremely well equipped, and the screened porch was perfect for our evening meals.

This place was a delight! Cozy yet roomy and private. The kitchen is well-outfitted for serious cooks and the screened in wraparound porch has two big hammocks for lounging around in as well as tables and chairs for enjoying an outdoor breakfast or lunch. Living room has comfortable couch and other chairs that make hanging out enjoyable. Master bedroom is spacious. Lots of wildlife including a great horned owl and other birds, as well as deer. Only 30 minutes from John Day Fossil beds and Painted hills and 30 minute to John Day, the town. Perfect!

We stayed 5 nights and felt like we were home. The kitchen had sufficient pots and pans. The silverware drawer was filled to the brim with all the utensils. We had plenty of plates, bowl, and glasses. The beds were comfortable and the pillows were soft. We all slept well. We had a large amount of towels and washclothes. There were books, games and the out of doors to keep one busy. We loved the deer in the front yard. It was so nice to sit on the porch at anytime and not be bothered by bugs. Wish I could have a screened porch at my house. We would definitely stay at this home again.

We came to this unique property for one month and stayed for 11 months! This renovated farmhouse with wrap-around screen porch and cozy interior was delightful every day of our stay. The unique amenities include privacy, the beautiful trees, access to hiking, and nearby national forest. You will love cooking in the country style kitchen and dining on the porch. Owners were very helpful with answering questions and providing all our possible accomodation amenities. We highly recommend this property as a luxury alternative to the areas seedy hotels.
