Blue Hill cottage description
Location Location Location! This small, secluded, two bedroom cottage is big on views and ambiance. The Danforth is built right on the water's edge. Listening to the lapping of the water or watching the activity on the harbor is mesmerizing whether at sunrise or sunset, in the soft fog or crisp light. There is always something to do or contemplate.
From the house you can look for sea glass on one of our two little beaches, launch rented kayaks or canoes, walk in the woods, or just sit and read by the fire. Sailing lessons are offered at the nearby yacht club and day sail charters are available through a local company. In town there are all kinds of educational and cultural programs for children as well as adults, many fine restaurants, galleries and craft shops. There are wonderful trails up Blue Hill Mountain. Acadia National Park is less than an hour away. The famous Wooden Boat School in Brooklin is a 20 minute drive.
Blue Hill is all about charm. The Danforth Cottage is all about you - from blueberry pancakes in the morning to steamed lobsters at night. It won't take long to discover that there is nothing more magical than a summer in Maine....

OUr stay in Blue Hill
This is our fourth year to return to the Danforth cottage in Blue Hill. The photos and description accurately describe what to expect. The house is in good condition and very comfortable for 4-6 people. The views are spectacular and the sunsets could not be better. The house is well equipped with comfortable beds, a very complete kitchen and beautiful stone fireplace. lIt is everything a summer cottage should be but the outstanding feature is the broad deck overlooking the water. Nearby activites include boating, swimming, hiking, birding, lots of art galleries, two excellent restaurants in Blue Hill plus small local inexpensive places to eat. The local produce available at the farmers markets can't be beat. Within 10 minutes is a full service super market, Kneisel Hall for classical musical performances as well as local theatrical productions. Acadia National Park hosts a large variety of activities and is only about one hour away. Travelling south, about 1 1/2 hours you are in Camden and Rockport (two outstanding art museums)as well as ferries to some of the out islands which make for a lovely day trip. There is also an excellent cooking school very close to Camden. The owner has been very helpful with aswering questions, assist in the practicalities of the stay and helping to resolve any issues which may arise.

What a spectacularly beautiful place. This cottage was exactly what the doctor ordered. The quiet mornings down at the beach right below the house, afternoons wandering the woods with the dog, or evenings visiting galleries and eating lobster on the deck, nothing could be more relaxing. I truly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a break, it's perfect.

Haven by the Bay
Haven by the Bay
Danforth Cottage has become a summer haven for us. A well supplied kitchen provides all of the necessities for us "foodies". (Don't miss the weekly Blue Hill Farmers Market!) We find ourselves at home on the spacious deck watching the sailboats go by or in front of the grand stone fireplace reading a book. The owners are helpful when needed. VRBO website truly gives an accurate picture of the coziness of the vintage cottage and all its amenities.

Year Purchased: 1970
About the owner: After summering in Maine since infancy, in 1978 my husband decided to become a full time resident. Living here year round has been a decision neither of us have ever regretted. We are both artists and the natural beauty which surrounds us even in the spring and winter months is intoxicating. The thought of going anywhere else just doesn't occur.
Why the Owner Chose Blue Hill:
The Danforth Cottage was part of my husband's family estate and originally built by the man who designed the Danforth anchor. It is surrounded by woods and built only 30 feet from the shore. The views from the deck and the living room picture window are delightful. There are two pocket beaches easily accessed from the shore by stairs where rented paddle boats can be launched. It is within walking distance to the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club, which has a fabulous junior program open to the public, where all of our children learned how to sail.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
On cold foggy days there is nothing better than sitting by the fire and reading or working on a jigsaw puzzle. On sunny days, sitting outside on the deck or on the bench at the shore contemplating a swim can't be beat. The town of Blue Hill has a wonderful farmers' market, a food co-op and two grocery stores, There are fine galleries. restaurants. a great library and a very good hospital should the need ever arise. MERI offers educational programs on the marine environment throughout the summer and Kneisel Hall has a fabulous music program. It is less than an hours drive to the famous Acadia National Park. Between eating lobster and gazing at the view, the summers in Maine fly by....
