Location: Oceanwoods Cottage, West Beach, Kiawah Island, Charleston Area, South Carolina, USA (About 20 Miles SE of Charleston, SC) View Map

Accommodations:  Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

A cozy cottage nestled in woods, with Spanish moss hanging from the trees.

We have an extra large deck, and a paved walk from parking area to outdoor shower. Unique water heating system (Rinnai) provides unlimited hot water for all inside the cottage.

And the best part is you only have a two-minute walk through the trees on a paved path to the beach.

The ten-mile long beach is 100 yards wide at low tide, with a gentle slope to it ...perfect for young children. Plenty of shelling and sand-castle building.

Our entry to the beach is just a ten-minute stroll down the beach from the new five-star hotel "The Sanctuary", the only hotel on Kiawah Island...where you can have a drink and enjoy their amenities...but not pay the high price to stay there.

Kiawah is the "gem" of the Atlantic Coast...not crowded, well-protected with controlled access. There is plenty to do or do nothing...and Charleston nearby has all the other amenities you might want just a short drive away.

Map & Owner's Profile

Why the Owner Chose Oceanwoods Cottage

We were stationed in Panama from 1978-1980, and wanted a get-away in the USA. After looking up and down the SE coast of the US we found Kiawah in 1975...before it was developed. We bought in 1978 and never looked back. We have recently remodeled our cottage adding an expanded deck, upgraded the bathrooms and kitchen, added an unlimited hot water supply with the Rennai system, added a gas-log fireplace and a paved walkway from the parking area to the outdoor shower.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage

We love the security, the remoteness, the quietness, the Spanish moss in the trees, the bike paths, and most especially, the beach. In all of our travels over the years, we have never found any place that could match Kiawah for all these aspects that we treasure.

We are addicted to the ocean, the beach, travel, our family and Kiawah. And, most especially, we thank God for allowing us the privledge of our times at Kiawah.

A
Our cottage...460 Vetch Ct. (Oceanwoods)

Our cottage is just 150 yards from the beach in a nicely wooded area within a cluster of cottages...no through traffic as the road along the beach dead-ends a block away.

B
Main Gate at Kiawah Island.

Friendly guards will help with directions if needed.

C
The Sanctuary Hotel

This is a fairly new Five Star Hotel, only 500 yards down the beach from our cottage...you can stroll in from the beach, buy a snack at the outdoor bar and use their pools for a fee. It is worth a wa

D
Bohicket Marina

A lovely creek front Marina, a perfect location to see the sunset, rent a fishing boat, or find a nice restaurant.

E
Traffic circle and Freshfields Shopping area.

The company that manages our cottage, Beachwalker Rentals, is located within the Freshfields Shopping area...as are several nice shops and restaurants.

Owner's Map of Oceanwoods Cottage

Judy and Ward have been married for more than 50 years. Judy grew up in NJ and Alexandria, VA. Ward grew up in Coronado, CA and MD. They spent 32 years serving in the US Army and were stationed in Japan, Germany, Italy and Panama, and throughout the USA. Ward had two tours in combat in Vietnam and one tour in Korea. They have four children, four spouses-in-law, and eleven grandchildren.

After Ward retired from the Army in 1988, they bought a 39-ft sailboat and sailed around the world over five years. This voyage covered 33,000 miles and started at West Point, NY and ended at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. They wrote a book and produced a VHS/DVD about their journey. "Once Around" is aptly titled, since they don't intend to sail around the world again!!!

They bought their cottage on Kiawah in 1978...before it was built! They and their family have enjoyed Kiawah ever since, and they love sharing it with old friends and new.

A Wonderful Vacation

I highly recommend this rental. This was our first time staying at this property and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The home is extremely convenient to the beach (less than 3mins walking) and is very comfortable with all the amenities. The furniture is in great shape and the home is exceptionally well maintained. The owners definitely take pride in their home. We were a family of 5 (4 adults and 1 child) and everyone had ample room to rest and relax. The large deck is perfect for enjoying morning coffee before heading to the beach. We all look forward to another stay.

Our stay on Kiawah Island

We couldn't have asked for a better vacation then staying on Kiawah Island. The house was very close to beach access. The bike trails were excellent and provided the ability to travel to the Sanctuary to get snacks, sandwiches, etc. or go to other parts of the island. The house was clean and comfortable. There was 2 bedrooms and a bath sectioned off with another door which was great for our kids because they liked to sleep in in the morning. Our family agreed that the beach on Kiawah was great!

Great island and a great cottage.

Great location and exactly as described. The beach was a very easy walk and the area was very quiet. The bedrooms had nice shades that made it very easy to sleep in a little on the days that we wanted to get some extra rest. The open great room (with a nice airy high ceiling) made it easy to be together even when everyone was into different activities. A nice bonus was the tankless hot water heater that made it possible for 6 adults to take showers without having to wait for the water heater to recover. The beach was not at all crowded and the biking and walking paths were great...nicely shaded and pleasant considering it was the first week of August. I would definitely recommend this cottage and Kiawah Island. We hope to return soon.

Great place to stay!

We loved staying in the home. It seemed closer to the beach than advertised. We were able to go to the beach with all our things and walk back and forth for lunch, etc. It was comfortable and within proximity of everything we wanted to do. The owners were a delight to work with and easy to contact via email while there. I would easily recommend this site to a friend and stay there again.
