Location: Private Homes, Gulf Pines, Sanibel Island, Florida South West, Florida, USA (Fort Myers - 27 Mi; Naples - 48 Mi; Swfla Airport - 31 Mi)
Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
The Cormorant House is ideal for active nature lovers who love cycling, swimming and tennis. It’s next door to the Gulf Pines swimming pool and tennis courts and a very short stroll to the beach along the world’s most idyllic path meandering along bayous and shaded by seagrapes and palms.
It’s also close to the Sanibel Recreation Center and some four miles from two of the island’s golf courses, The Dunes and Beachview.
You might also try kayaking at Tarpon Bay, parasailing at South Seas and a myriad of other activities. For children and adults I highly recommend the Sanibel Sea School programs.
See my website for full details of island activities.
The living room in The Cormorant House has a wood burning fireplace, vaulted ceilings and a serene lake view … a perfect place for relaxation. For entertainment, I have a large screen high definition television, DVD and VCR players and a small FM radio/CD/tape player as well as a number of games which I hope you will enjoy.
The kitchen has recently been remodeled with new cabinets, a smooth top range, a wall oven and microwave. The window pockets completely to open to s huge lanai with comfortable wicker furniture and a large glass dining table.
There are a number of eating alternatives. The breakfast bar open to the kitchen is for the cook who loves company. The more formal sunny indoor dining area is conveniently located next to the kitchen and the large table on the lanai by the lake is for dining al fresco surrounded by tropical trees and water. There’s also an outdoor table on the back deck by the barbecue grill.
The master bedroom, has ceramic tile floors, plantation shutters and an en-suite bathroom with walk-in closet and remote control ceiling fans. The queen size guest bedroom has sliding glass doors leading to an open deck overlooking the Bayou. There are two twin beds and a full size closet in the bedroom at the front of the house. The fourth bedroom has a queen size sleeper sofa and a full size closet.
On the ground floor is a two-car garage, an informal study/ quiet contemplation area, a workshop and a craft project area with a huge rustic table separates the study workshop area from the garage.
The study downstairs has a computer and printer with high speed internet and a television and sofa. It is air conditioned but would you be kind enough to use this responsibly and switch it off when not using the room
You will find fishing gear, charcoal barbecues, beach chairs, beach toys and a beach umbrella in the workshop and there are three barbecues available; a small tabletop barbecue under the table at the side of the lanai, a larger charcoal barbecue downstairs and a large gas grill on the deck upstairs. There’s also a craft area downstairs with a huge table for everything from shell decorations to fixing fishing line. There’s water by the fish cleaning table under the house and even an outdoor shower just by the back staircase if you get really messy!
Bicycles are the ideal way to get around Gulf Pines or anywhere on Sanibel. The island has a network of bike paths on all the major roads. There are four bicycles in the garage for your use and to help you enjoy the beach, there’s a beach umbrella and beach chairs and various beach games and toys. You’ll also find mesh bags and other receptacles for shell collecting.
Gulf Pines has two pools. One is right next to the house and is kept comfortably heated throughout the year. If you love to swim, and especially if you have small children, check out the new Sanibel Recreation Center pools at the Sanibel Recreation Center next to The Sanibel School. There are several pools for adults and children and all manner of fun water slides, showers, spouts and other fun water games. It’s only $12 a day for the family.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2006
I am a former educator and journalist and now a Realtor on Sanibel Island in Florida. Originally from England, I have lived in Switzerland, Canada and The Bahamas. I came to Sanibel Island 24 years ago for two days holiday, fell in love with the warmth of beauty of the islands and stayed. Since that time I've been editor of the Islander and the Island Reporter, a professor of communication at Florida Gulf Coast University and Administrator of the Captiva Erosion Prevention District.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes, Gulf Pines
The beachfront community of Gulf Pines is one of the most beautiful on the island. It's a community built around bayous with low key island style wooden homes shaded by tropical trees and plants. There are no manicured lawns or large concrete structures. The entire community is designed to be in harmony with nature. The roads are shell driveways and the path to the beach is beautiful, meandering around bayous and shaded by seagrapes and palms. Its natural beauty is as attractive to tropical wildlife as to people and birds such as ibises, herons, pelicans and cormorants abound.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Some of the many things I love about my home are the huge lanai and the wide open deck overlooking the bayou --- perfect places to view the tropical birds and wildlife. I love the vaulted and beamed ceilings in the living area. The kitchen was newly remodeled to provide dining on three sides, a formal dining room on one, a breakfast bar on the other and the informal lanai on the south side. I also love my study downstairs. It's a relaxed, island style home designed to make the most of the beautiful surroundings.
