Casa Sonrisa Hermosa is a relaxing 4 bedroom 3.5 bath, oceanfront home, situated on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The home is located in a gated community less than an hour and a half from the Liberia airport. It has approx. 5500 square feet (including porches), and was designed to blend the indoor and outdoor living spaces together. The outdoor living space is amazing. One of the most noticeable features is the 12 foot wide open air breezeway that runs through the middle of the house on the ground level, offering spectacular views of the ocean from the minute you pull up in your car. There are two bedrooms on this level. The bunk room has a queen, a twin, a bunk bed, half bath, and fantastic views of the ocean and pool. The other downstairs guest bedroom is set up with 2 twins and a king, which can be made into 2 additional twins if needed. It also has a fantastic view of the ocean and pool. On this floor there is also a full bath, laundry room, a bodega with secure storage, and a kitchenette in the breezeway. The breezeway opens onto a huge covered porch area with tropical concrete benches, colorful hammocks, and beautiful arches. All of this overlooks the beautiful infinity edge pool. With the way the lot drops off, you really feel like the pool runs right into the ocean. There is large decking on 3 sides of the pool with plenty of outdoor furniture.
The second level of the home really captures the best of all views. The huge great room/dining area has 24 foot vaulted tropical wood ceilings, and has outstanding views of the mountains out the front and the ocean in back. In fact, at high tide, you can stand in the middle of the room and all you see is water, no land. The hand made wooden doors along the back of the house are designed so you can completely open them to the outside porch. Open to this room is the large kitchen that really is cool. Its top feature is an 8 ft. long gaunacaste wood bar top that can be completely opened to the porch. Whether you are sitting here having breakfast or drinks, the views are incredible. Other features include stainless steel appliances, huge center island, and loads of storage. The master bedroom is also on this floor and overlooks the ocean. It has a king bed and its own private bath. The other guest bedroom is also on this floor and has a queen bed and its own private bath, and windows with views of both the ocean and mountains. There is a front porch on this level that overlooks the mountains and a huge back porch 15 feet wide with 14 foot vaulted wood ceilings and beautiful teak railings overlooking the ocean. It has a bar area, dining room table, hammock, and a couple of different sitting areas. Needless to say, there is plenty of room for everybody. The views of the Sunsets are amazing here. The sun sets almost directly in front of the house and is something everybody makes a point to enjoy.
The mirador is on the third floor and is an open air room with a roof. It is a great area to check the views out, or just relax on the hammock. This is the place to go when you want some quiet time. Also on this level are stairs leading to the rooftop deck. If you want to be blown away by the views, this is the place to go. It is also a great area for star gazing or if you want to sun bathe with privacy.
For the surfer, this house is ideal. While having your morning coffee, you can check out the surf at Playa Negra, one of the best right hand breaks in the country and just a 4 minute walk from the house. There are also several other lesser known breaks within walking distance, both for the beginner and more advanced surfer. Only about a mile and half away is Playa Avellanes, a super long white sandy beach with a left reef break, a sandy beach break, a river mouth break, and an offshore right reef break. All kinds of different waves, for all skill levels and different places to surf for every tide. Other breaks within 40 minutes drive are Playa Junquillal, Marbella, and the breaks around Tamarindo and Langosta. It is a great area if you like variety and different style breaks.
For the non surfer, Playa Negra is probably the best beach town for just chilling out. It is one of the few beach areas where there is still very little development and crowds. Other than right in front of the Negra surf break, you can sometimes walk for over an hour in either direction and you may not see another person. The coastline is spectacular with a combination of rocky outcroppings and sandy beaches, and everyday there are all kinds of new treasures that can be found on the beach. It is a very rugged and beautiful and has some of the clearest water in Costa Rica. At low tide, there are lots of tidal pools that are great for relaxing or snorkeling in, and there is a great sandy swimming beach about 5 minutes walk south. Other activities in Negra or nearby include yoga, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, world class golf at nearby Hacienda Pinilla, and more. For those traveling with young children, Playa Negra is a great family area. Kids will love exploring the tidal pools, climbing on the rocks, snorkeling, fishing, shell collecting, swimming, playing pool at the nearby hotel, discovering all kinds of wildlife like monkeys, iguanas, crabs, and much, much more.
There are all kinds of great restaurants nearby. Whether you have a taste for Peruvian, Italian, French, Local cuisine, Middle Eastern, Nouveau American, Gourmet Burritos, or just Pizza, there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes drive or closer. All have a lot of local character and amazing food. If you want to just eat in but do not feel like cooking, plenty of these restaurants can bring you a catered dinner. Although there is not much nightlife in Negra other than what you make yourself, the town of Tamarindo is only about 35 minutes drive away and offers plenty of bars and nightlife if you are looking for a more active night.

Just looking at the pictures of the house and property fill me with joy and happiness. I spent a week in the house with friends and found this VRBO property to be a perfect set up. We had a small group, some avid surfers and others book worms, however the property really appealed to all. Hundreds of steps from one of the best breaks in Costa Rica, and a few hours from Witches Rock and Ollie's Point this is a surfers dream come true. The house was also fully loaded so you didn’t need to pack anything but a suit and pack your boards. The rental boards are pretty weak in the town of Tamarindo. While the area is only a short drive/walk from local restaurants, I would recommend cooking in the kitchen and enjoying an outside dinner on the patio as much as possible. The kitchen opens up to the patio and really captures the inside/outside lifestyle so customary of Costa Rica. I also remember the beds and linens were pretty exceptional for a rental. The house is stocked with amenities and well worth the rate. I have nothing but fond memories and rave reviews for this costa rica retreat and plan on booking for another week this summer. We all want to go back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This was my first visit to Costa Rica and it was everything I imagined. The house and property are impeccable. The people were friendly and helpful. We sampled all the local restaurants. All the food was amazing. We traveled to a local festival on one evening about 1 hour away and secured a driver who became our tour guide. He was great. We surfed and relaxed. Traveled south about 2 hrs and did a zip line course. We snorkled in Tamarindo and stayed all day and night and ate at the Dragon Fly. Tamarindo is about 40 mins from the house. Finally, we were invited to neighbors bbq on the lastnight in Playa Negra. Check out Lola's; Cafe Playa Negra; and "Willy" at the local bar / pizza joint.. He loves soccer. The owners and the local representative could not have been more helpful. I look forward to going back in 2011!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

You never know what a place is going to be like until you get there and see it in person. From the description and photos online, the place looks great, but when we got to the property we were blown away! The views are spectacular, the quality of the house and amenities are excellent and the property manager was helpful and efficient in dealing with our arrangements. I will definitely be going back here with family and friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

For anyone looking for a private, secluded, and beautiful vacation home, this is it. My family was totally relaxed within minutes of arriving and meeting the property manager. Vaulted ceilings throughout provide a nice airy quality. Home has air conditioning but is not needed with thoughtful cross ventilation provided by ocean breezes throughout. Enjoy quiet evenings stargazing from the deck or family times poolside. Awake to a vast front porch view of the great Pacific ocean and Negra surf break. Just far enough away to maintain a sense of privacy, yet also a quick walk via the pathway to the beach. Numerous surf breaks in the area, including Lola's - great for teens (10 minutes away), or Playa Marbella - a favorite (45 minutes away). We found ourselves hustling to get back to the numerous hammocks and pool every day. Downstairs bedrooms and baths are also thoughtfully constructed and decorated, not as an afterthought like so many other homes. Plenty of good restaurants and lunch spots nearby to entertain you. Can't wait to get back to this gem!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We rented this home last summer with another family and we can not brag enough about this house. Set up perfectly for any size group. Spacious bedrooms that are all air conditioned. The house is perfectly decorated and the attention to detail is fabulous. Gorgeous ocean views from huge upstairs deck and by the pool. We felt very safe and secure in this house. We had four kids and the pool was just perfect. Many great breaks for the surfers and great restaurants for all. Don't miss Lola's. And don't pass this house up.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.
