Why the Owner Chose Crossville

I bought this house because it is next door to the house I grew up in. Both houses are located in a National Historic District on the Cumberland Plateau in Crossville, Tennessee. Both are available for vacation rental. They are only two of the two hundred and fifty homes built during the Great Depression to teach new skills to out-of-work miners and farmers during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency. These men also built schools and churches in the community. A park built for the community later became Cumberland Mountain State Park. The park is one mile from the vacation home. Many government agencies assisted in the training program. There are two museums in the Historic District to tell the story of these people who were part of the "Greatest Generation."

The Unique Benefits at this House

I enjoy getting away from the stress of our world today, and slipping back to a simpler place in time. It is a place to just slow down, to appreciate nature, and get back in touch with one's self and what is important in life. There is ample wildlife, a pond for fishing, camping, or star gazing. However, it is only a short drive (five miles) into the town of Crossville, TN which has evolved from a farming community to a tourist mecca. The State Park (1 mile away) offers an olympic size swimming pool, hiking, fishing, boating, and an excellent restaurant. Bear Trace Golf Course is two miles away. Crossville is known as "The Golf Capital of Tennesse, boasting a total of 12 golf courses. There are shops, outlet mall, restaurants, a community playhouse known worldwide, a ten movie theatre. Country music is appreciated at many local restaurant/bars. It is a small town with a big city attitude. Twelve golf courses nearby offer recreation and dining. The outlet mall and local antique shops offer plenty of shopping opportunities. There many area attractions for "day trips" and the landscape you will enjoy getting to those points is beautiful. There are many waterfalls in the area you will enjoy visiting. There are many restaurants and grocery stores in town. If there are health concerns, the hospital is only ten minutes away.

Owner's Map of Crossville

I grew up in Crossville, Tennessee and have loved this area all my life. My childhood home was part of the Cumberland Homestead National Historic District. I wish to share this little bit of heaven with others. I attended school 12 years in the school built by the CCC (Civilian Consecration Corp) and men from the families chosen to live in the Cumberland Homestead project. I played in the Cumberland Mountain Park that was built by the CCC for the recreation of the residents of the project. The park was turned over to the State of Tennessee when the houses were sold during Harry Truman's presidency. The project was the forerunner of public housing. Later, my career was that of Executive Director of a public housing apartment rental complex. I felt I had come full circle. I enjoy people, and my retirement plan was to open a bed and breakfast in the area I call "home." However, most people prefer just the standard vacation rental because they are anxious to get to the many events and beautiful places that area has to offer.
