UNIQUE! ONE OF A KIND! No other rental can compare. STEP BACK IN TIME to when trees, for walls, were felled by hand; doorways were lower; floors were made of pine planks, and soothing rain sounded on tin roofs. When you open the door to this homestead you will find furnishings that reflect the 175 years of it's existance; however, every effort has been made to provide today's visitor comfortable, modern amenities in this historic atmosphere. Truly, our visitors will have a DIFFERENT experience!

A stone fireplace in the downstairs bedroom is equipped with gas logs. Imagine watching TV from the high, queen-size bed (step-stool provided) on a chilly evening, with logs flickering in the fireplace! This bedroom has adjoining bath.
Two parlors provide space for both grown-ups and kids to enjoy TV and games, or just wile away a lazy afternoon. Central heat and A/C are provided downstairs; however, (if you desire), a wood-burning stove is in the "great room", along with TV, DVD and game table. The front parlor is excellent for reading, surfing the web, dozing away or roasting marshmallows over a fire in the fireplace.

There are 2 bedrooms upstairs. One has full size bed and a youth bed. The other has queen size. Both are furnished with "common folk" antiques and separate heat/AC controls that are super quiet. Our beds must be experienced to believe - they are sooooo comfortable! A baby crib can be brought in, at no extra charge, if needed.

A complete "eat-in" kitchen has everything needed for comfortable, convenient meals. If you don't see the modern ovens and dishwasher immediately, just open a door, and you'll be surprised!

Families planning reunions find this location ideal because of nostalgia it evokes among the over-fifty crowd. School children love to "explore" the outbuildings (one was once a blacksmith shop, the other a smoke house/corn crib), and learn, first-hand, what these utilitarian building were used for. It's also fun to search for the real Indian arrowhead embedded in one of the logs!

If you are wanting a new and modern facility, this is not for you. If you are handicapped, we apologize that we do not have a ramp over our 3 stone steps. If you are taller than some of our doors, you may have to duck. I'm sorry about this, but we're trying to maintain as much authenticity as possible.

If you wish catering, that can be arranged. (How about a picnic lunch to Brasstown Bald Mountain, the highest point in GA?) Cleaning fee is $50.

Owner's Map of Blairsville

We are GA folks who, 17 years ago, retired to these beautiful mountains because we love the place, people and history of this area. We love sharing what we have learned about our Choestoe District("Land of the Dancing Rabbits"),and hopefully, increasing folks' appreciation for our heritage. We live about 1 mile from Homestead, where we offer guests accessibility to our picnic shelter and fish pond for their family reunions and get-togethers. We are available to answer your questions and assist with planning your trip. If you have special requests, we'll do all we can to make it happen. Just call us! 706-745-5089

Amazing history and great quiet location ,very peaceful and spacious. We loved the owners they are friendly and knowledgeable of the property and surroundings in this area. The house was SO CLEAN and Comfortable ,well stocked and easy to find . I have just recommended this property to another couple who is also interested in renting . I clean VRBO cabins in the Smokey MTNS and I am very particuliar about cleanliness and this was above my expectations . Had a wonderful, quiet week at this very unique Homestead. Appreciated the history and uniqueness of the home and furnishings. Everything we needed, plenty of quiet and room for the family with grandson to join us late in the week. We all had a wonderful time, have NEVER stayed at a place more comfortable and homey. Nearby, you must check out Alexander's store and DO NOT MISS the Misty Mountain Railroad Museum just down the road. It is an incredible place and the money goes to the owners choice of various charities. We will definitely be back again for some quiet time!

Delightful stay

My husband and I were delighted to discover that the description of the property fit it to a tee. The cabin was like stepping back in time but with modern conveniences. The place was spotless and our stay was very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio watching the deer early in the morning. The rabbits were always around and the fireflies at night were a delight. The mountain views from the kitchen window were what we came here for. We have fallen in love with the area and plan to return soon.

Peaceful and pleasant. Something different

Guest: Mister North (Michigan)
Date of Stay: 04/22/11 Review Submitted: 04/26/11

We selected The Homestead over numerous other rentals because it was very different. We gave up hot-tubs and pool tables for excellent views and a historic feeling. Our hosts were kind and took the time to explain the history behind the buildings. We found the accommodations to be comfortable, clean, and downright cozy. I would call this an excellent value, and would encourage friends to stay here as well. Oh, there are porches front and back with very good views of the hills and forest We used them heavily. Lots of space between us and the neighbors.

My wife and I spent two wonderful, quiet nights at the cabin and could not have enjoyed the experience any more at any other place. The owners are two very special people. We would recommend the cabin to anyone, especially those with a love of history and a love of the area. We will be back.

Breathtaking experience. A MUST do for yourselves!

Guest: Bruce & Pam Renew (Bartow FL)
Date of Stay: 12/24/10 Review Submitted: 01/08/11

My wife and I along with our son, his wife and two children ages 2 & 6 just complete a week through the 2010 Christmas Holidays and lucky us, got to enjoy a "White Christmas" too! Our first ever white Christmas. This was what we had planned for, but as luck would have it, we just didn't know it was going to be this nice. And, as it has been said, this area had not seen a White Christmas in over two decades. Just our luck though, it was fantastic. We enjoyed the warm real wood Fireplace and marsh mellows, not to mention the wood heater and the central heat. Just Florida folks having the most wonderful time you could imagine. Thank you Idalu and Earl Bishop for your most friendly hospitality too! You folks help make our winter vacation the best winter vacation ever! Thank you!

God's Country

Guest: Gene & Joy (Waycross, GA)
Date of Stay: 10/01/10 Review Submitted: 10/14/10

If there ever was a place you could call "God's Country" this is it. We could only stay two nights this time but we will return for more. The listing is very accurate, the photos reflected the cabin's appearance and was well maintained. The owners were very nice people, wish we had more time to get to know them better. We picked apples in Blue Ridge, enjoyed the festival in Blairsville with the antique cars and we shopped. Our favorite restaurants in Blairsville are Fatz, Cooks, the Sawmill Place and Hole in the Wall.

Listen

Date of Stay: 09/08/10 Review Submitted: 09/21/10

Sit down in front of the fireplace, close your eyes and listen carefully. Hear the voices of the ones who were there before you. Feel the joy, heartache, fear, the anger and especially the faith and the love that still lingers in the room. It is truly amazing. Our week at the Homestead was one of the best times we have had in the N GA Mountains. Nothing fancy but you don't notice. You are to busy visiting the past with all of today's conveniences. Don't miss out on this trip to yesterday. The Bishop's are wonderful and go out of their way to acquaint you with the surrounding area. The cabin is well equipped with most everything you need.

Guest: Roadster5580 (Douglasville, GA)
Date of Stay: 05/10/10 Review Submitted: 05/17/10

Just returned from a wonderful week at this property. I can honestly say it was the best vacation we've experienced. The cabin is beautiful, the view is beautiful, and the cabin was stocked with about anything you would need. Ida and Earl are great host. Couldn't have asked for more in the way of a mountain vacation. I would highly recommended this property to anyone considering a vacation in the North Georgia mountains.
