UNIQUE! ONE OF A KIND! No other rental can compare. STEP BACK IN TIME to when trees, for walls, were felled by hand; doorways were lower; floors were made of pine planks, and soothing rain sounded on tin roofs. When you open the door to this homestead you will find furnishings that reflect the 177 years of it's existance; however, every effort has been made to provide today's visitor comfortable, modern amenities in this historic atmosphere. Truly, our visitors will have a DIFFERENT experience!

A stone fireplace in the downstairs bedroom is equipped with gas logs. Imagine watching TV from the high, queen-size bed (step-stool provided) on a chilly evening, with logs flickering in the fireplace! This bedroom has adjoining bath.
Two parlors provide space for both grown-ups and kids to enjoy TV and games, or just wile away a lazy afternoon. Central heat and A/C are provided downstairs; however, (if you desire), a wood-burning stove is in the 'great room', along with TV, DVD and game table. The front parlor is excellent for reading, surfing the web, dozing away or roasting marshmallows over a fire in the fireplace.

There are 2 bedrooms upstairs. One has full size bed and a youth bed. The other has queen size. Both are furnished with 'common folk' antiques and separate heat/AC controls that are super quiet. Our beds must be experienced to believe - they are sooooo comfortable! A baby crib can be brought in, at no extra charge, if needed.

A complete 'eat-in' kitchen has everything needed for comfortable, convenient meals. If you don't see the modern ovens and dishwasher immediately, just open a door, and you'll be surprised!

Families planning reunions find this location ideal because of nostalgia it evokes among the over-fifty crowd. School children love to 'explore' the barn and outbuildings (one was once a blacksmith shop, the other a smoke house/corn crib), and learn, first-hand, what these utilitarian building were used for. It's also fun to search for the real Indian arrowhead embedded in one of the logs!

If you are wanting a new and modern facility, this is not for you. If you are handicapped, we apologize that we do not have a ramp over our 3 stone steps. If you are taller than some of our doors, you may have to duck. I'm sorry about this, but we're trying to maintain as much authenticity as possible.

If you wish catering, that can be arranged. (How about a picnic lunch to Brasstown Bald Mountain, the highest point in GA?) Cleaning fee is $60.

My husband and I came to georgia for a weeks vacation,we saw the pictures of the cabin on the website but they don,t even do it justice. If you like historic homes this one is for you! we really enjoyed hearing about the history of the cabin from Idalu and reading about it in the scrap books. We found it so relaxing to sit on the porch or deck and just unwind.Hiking is our favorite past time and it was a nice central location, with many great trails nearby. We would highly recommend this cabin and it was pet friendly so our 4 leg hiking buddy came too!

The cabin was fantastic and the kids loved it. They played in the cabin with their imaginations running wild and learning at every turn. We also were able to play as a family on the front lawn (football, toss-across, chase, tag, and just fun). The lot is big enough and clear enough for views, space, some privacy and a lot of fun. On top of the house you have access to a barn, smoke house, and another out building. The kids played in all three supervised and had lots of fun pretending they lived on the farm 175 years ago. The Bishop's were also very knowledgable about the house, history, and area. There was also enough frost on the ground for the kids to sled down one hill in the early morning before the sun hit the slope (this is southern sledding only but plenty of fun).

….that’s how old one of the one-room cabins is that makes up this home….3 original one-room cabins from this valley that make up this 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with two living spaces and an eat-in kitchen. Antiques abound….for those taller than 5’10 or so prepare to duck…you get used to it. The owners have cared for this property and are exacting in their historic preservation and love for history. They property was exceptionally clean, tidy and comfortable. Yes, the wood floors creak upstairs but that’s part of the authenticity. The place has central air and central heat…plus a wood burning stove that will heat you out of the house if you really get it going! While this property has a modern conveniences such as a dishwasher, two wall ovens in the kitchen, washing machine/dryer, wi-fi internet and cable television (albeit a small one) this is not why you stay in a property such as this. This is history, living history…that one has the honor of being able to sleep and dine inside….these hand hewn walls could speak volumes…a property of museum quality. This property is amazing…the description and pictures don’t do it justice. The two bedrooms upstairs are very large. The master bedroom downstairs has a wood-burning fireplace. We rented this for a post-wedding semi-family reunion. It’s perfect for 3 couples or a family. One night we had 14 for dinner….between the kitchen table that seats 6, plus a game table where we sat 4, plus a drop-leaf table that sat 4. It was a lot but it was family and it was great. I am originally from Alexandria, Virginia….I love history and appreciate the architecture, the craftsmanship, the authenticity of homes from early days of our young country…this property truly matches that era….and in this part of Georgia circa 1835…this was considered frontier and not for the faint of heart. Yes, I would stay here again and again.

The pictures don't quite do the place justice - it's really like living in a mountain log cabin. Real convenient to town and other attractions, and, in my opinion, the Choestoe/Trackrock area is the prettiest part of Union county. Be sure to look off the back porch into the surrounding mountains and see if you can find the cross hidden in the trees.

This property provided the perfect atmosphere for our country themed wedding! The beautiful mountain views and old world charm of the cabin made my wedding even more special. The quiet cool nights and the soft plush beds were amazing. All the feel of living 175 years ago but with all the modern conveniences that we are so accustomed to. I have already recommended this place to 2 other people and plan on coming back in the future! As this is our last night here, we are dreading having to leave!

I had always wanted to stay in an authentic log home from the 1800's, that is why we choose Homestead. We were fortunate to be able to spend two of the most glorious weeks there. Everything was blooming, dogwood trees, all kinds of flowers, meadows and pastures were such a deep green. So many birds and rabbits and a few deer were on the property. The Track Rock Gap area is my favorite area of all. Just beautiful. Earl and Ida are two of the most precious people you will ever meet. They made sure we had everything we needed. Ida gave us the history of the cabins and how all three cabins came together. They stopped by one day and we had a nice visit while we were swinging in the swing on the large front porch. We had a lot of lazy days on that porch and on the back porch that had the mountain views, just unreal!!!!! I felt like I was back in the Pioneer Days. Homestead has so much history to it. All the hard work that went in to building those cabins back then. Did a lot of site seeing. Went to Vogel State Park, ate BBQ at Jim's BBQ, delicious, gotta go there. Took our lab to Meek's Dog Park just about everyday... The photos listed are very accurately to what you will see when you drive up to the cabin. Everything was nice and clean and not to overdone, just perfect. This would be a great get away for a family, a couple or a family reunion. We will never be able to thank Earl and Ida for all their kindness and love they gave to us and all the love they have given to Homestead all these years. You are missing out on a great wonder if you don't stay at this charming cabin and beautiful area. The Hunters

Had a wonderful, quiet week at this very unique Homestead. Appreciated the history and uniqueness of the home and furnishings. Everything we needed, plenty of quiet and room for the family with grandson to join us late in the week. We all had a wonderful time, have NEVER stayed at a place more comfortable and homey. Nearby, you must check out Alexander's store and DO NOT MISS the Misty Mountain Railroad Museum just down the road. It is an incredible place and the money goes to the owners choice of various charities. We will definitely be back again for some quiet time!

My husband and I were delighted to discover that the description of the property fit it to a tee. The cabin was like stepping back in time but with modern conveniences. The place was spotless and our stay was very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio watching the deer early in the morning. The rabbits were always around and the fireflies at night were a delight. The mountain views from the kitchen window were what we came here for. We have fallen in love with the area and plan to return soon.

We selected The Homestead over numerous other rentals because it was very different. We gave up hot-tubs and pool tables for excellent views and a historic feeling. Our hosts were kind and took the time to explain the history behind the buildings. We found the accommodations to be comfortable, clean, and downright cozy. I would call this an excellent value, and would encourage friends to stay here as well. Oh, there are porches front and back with very good views of the hills and forest We used them heavily. Lots of space between us and the neighbors.
