Lake City townhome description
Location, Location, Location! Many people feel this property is similar to being on a houseboat. The front deck is directly over the water of Lake San Cristobal. You can hear the lapping of waves as you read or eat on the lovely front deck. The mountains behind the lake are green in summer, aspen covered in fall, and snow covered in winter.
The area is well know for its five fourteen thousand foot mountain peaks. Hiking on the many surrounding trails will follow streams, waterfalls, and valleys filled with wildflowers. There is also the wonderful Alpine Loop that takes jeeps and four-wheelers across the continental divide to the high country land of mountain Shepard's and tundra. Silverton and ghost towns are also along this route.
Of course fishermen think this is paradise. The lake and all the surrounding streams provide wonderful fishing. In September Lake City has a Wine and Music Festival. In February the annual balloon festival on the lake creates its own magic as you sail over the lake in colorful hot air balloons. In winter there is abundant snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice climbing. This is the time of year that captures the quiet of the season. Relaxing with a book by the fire is a welcome treat. This home provides a respite from the usual business of the world.

A Beautiful Getaway
A Beautiful Getaway
My family and I have vacationed in this condo for one week each of the past five years. I can honestly say that I have never stayed in such a quaint and comfortable rental. We are always particularly struck by the tastefulness of the decor, which is western/rustic themed without being obnoxious. The master bedroom and living room offer unbelievable views--a spectacular expanse of lake surrounded by mountains. This vacation home allows a person to really, truly escape the stresses of daily life and immerse oneself in nature. Fishing, hiking, four-wheeling, horseback riding, mountain biking and kayaking are several of my family's favorite Lake City pastimes. The area is filled with Jeep trails which can be used to take day trips to nearby towns, including Ouray, where there are some lovely hot springs. On our "down" days, we like to spend time reading and napping on the large deck which, by the way, is frequented by a large and verbose clan of hummingbirds. While on hikes we've spotted a wide variety of wildlife. We are always particularly excited to see mountain goats. Despite the rental's proximity to nature, the town of Lake City is less than 10 minutes away by car. The little town has several restaurants, some fitness classes, a bakery, grocery store, library, coffee shop, movie theater, and a few other amenities--but don't expect a booming metropolis. The Lake City grocery store is small and can be a bit pricey, so we often pick up groceries when we drive through Gunnison. But, the Lake City grocery store has enough to get you by if you can't make it to Gunnison. The rental has a furnished kitchen, so we often cook our own meals and eat on the deck. I cannot say enough good things about our annual trip to Lake City. It's our chance to reconnect with nature and each other, and disconnect from our laptops and cell phones. While we also enjoy vacationing at beaches or ski resorts, everyone in our family agrees--our annual trip to Lake City feels uniquely like a homecoming.
