Unique architecture make this house perfect for its perch on a peninsula on Emerald Lake.

Spectacular views of the lake can be seen from every room. The living area of the house is a octagon structure, all glass on the front, with a guest bedrooms wing, a master bedroom wing, and a garage/storage wing.

A patio wraps around the front of the house. Huge oaks and pines offer shade and a breeze for perfect summer days. Hundreds of feet of private lake frontage offers space for lawn games and a sandy beach.

There is a dock for your boat and a canoe and paddleboat are there for your use. A hammock hangs in the oaks for a lazy afternoon, and a raft floats just off the shore for swimming fun. There's a fire pit for evening gatherings and marshmallows.

Emerald Lake is one in a chain of 4 lakes with clear, clean water. Exploring by boat or hiking is fun and an adventure. Lake Michigan Beaches are 45 minutes west. Grand Rapids with museums, a zoo, and great shopping is 45 minutes south.

Muskegon River, known for fly fishing, river rafting and canoe trips, is 5 minutes away.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2002

Jim and Prudy Vannier's favorite pastime is spending time at their cottage called "The Point". Jim owns Northville Gallery in Northville, Michigan, and Prudy is an artist who teaches her painting style around the world. Their love for art, for travel, and for family is seen throughout the cottage and grounds.

Why the Owner Chose Newaygo

Prudy grew up in the area so knew about this chain of lakes and what relatively unknown treasures they are. We bought a little cottage in 1987 on an adjoining lake, always watching for this particular one to go up on sale. Patience paid off, and when it went on the market in 2002, we snatched it up! How we love it there for family time with our four children, and now four children + spouses + grandchildren!

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

Get all of the benefits of a resort but none of the tourists and crowds. There are hiking trails as well as bike trails that go for miles around the area. There are charming little towns to explore with restaurants and antique shops. Emerald Lake boasts of a local chef and a private library where you can arrange a tea party. So much to do....or sit and relax, watching for an occasional eagle and reading a good book.

Time to Unwind

The house is in a secluded setting on a private lake. It was very relaxing. Although the house is uphill from the lake, it is a gentle slope and not far from the water. Fishing, swimming, and boating were fun, but we also enjoyed such things as the campfires, star gazing, morning walks, and hearing the loons call across the lake. You can reach Sylvan Lake by boat from Emerald Lake. There is more than enough room by the lake for badminton, volleyball, etc.. The swimming area has a nice sandy bottom. The interior of the house was spacious and open, with a large dining table, plenty of counter space and plenty of places to sit and relax inside and out. The owners are helpful and pleasant.

Perfect Lake Relaxation

Date of Stay: 08/06/10 Review Submitted: 02/03/11

We had a wonderful vacation here! A gorgeous updated and very clean property on a wonderful lake. The lake even has quiet hours early morning and evening to ensure a peaceful time. During the day it's full of fun for the kids too. Great swimming with dock, a "library" a few doors down, and the cute town of Newaygo on the Muskegon River! Wake up to a wonderful view and enjoy your day with loads of options at your doorstep. Owners were wonderful to work with and we'll definitely be back.

Owner response:We're so glad you enjoyed your stay!
