Calle 66 is arguably the best address in the historic center of Merida. Just a 6 block walk to the Symphony and Opera or Zocalo with fine restaurants and museums. The villa is an exercise in the "architecture of sanctuary". Step through the heavy iron and wood doors into the quiet contemporary/colonial rooms with towering 6 meter hand carved beam ceilings and 27 skylights.
You can feel the cool and the calm. Original 1800s floor plan (3,300 sq ft) is retained and merged with clean, restrained contemporary detail and furnishings. Completely furnished including original art work. Superb quality furniture from Baker, Hickory Chair, Hickory-White and Maguire. Completely air conditioned and pressurized water system. The 20'x36' swimming pool is surrounded by lush tropical gardens with lighted fountain and fish pond. Total privacy for clothing option sun bathing.
Each bedroom is a suite with large spa style bath. The center courtyard also has a dramatic lighted waterfall for al fresco dining or drinks. Cable with TVs in each bedroom suite, high speed DSL wireless internet connection and marvelous 64" (diagonal) plasma TV in the salon is connected to a Bose sound system. Full range lighting dimmers in many of the rooms. Centro is being revitalized at a such a rate and with such taste that any home on Calle 66 and surrounds will be a great (not so long term?) investment. Calle 66 is the epicenter. - Suitability
- Pet Friendly: Our little dog is a perfect princess, but everyone says that. We will accept dogs with an additional security deposit and extra cleaning fee. The house is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after pet visits.
- Wheelchair Accessible (may have limitations): The house is all on one level and the showers are easily accessible although there is a step-up to enter the showers.
- Not Suitable for Children: Sorry, the decor and the pool are the issues.
- Smoking Not Allowed: Plenty of outdoor areas appropriate for smoking, but NO SMOKING anywhere in the house, please.

- Six to eight block walk places you in the zocalo, the opera house, theatres (both live and movie), restaurants and shopping. A 20 minute drive places you at the Gulf of Mexico and there are numerous pyramids and ruins within 20 to 60 minutes by car or tour bus. Numerous senotes surround Merida. Senotes are pools of crystal clear water where our underground rivers surface. They are ideal for swimming. There are many historic haciendas with a 30 to 60 minute drive where you can dine, swim and stroll.

Year Purchased: 2005
My partner of 32 years, John Azar and I are retired and spend most of our time at our home in Lake Arrowhead, the Southern California, Alps. We miss our home in Merida when we are away. We miss the pool, the people and the culture and of course the beautiful blue skies and warm climate. Enjoy our "sanctuary" in the heart of historical Merida. The oldest cathedral in Mexico is an 8 block walk from our door as are numerous museums and restaurants. The gulf is 20 minutes away and there are wonderful overnight excursions to exotic Gulf beaches.
Why the Owner Chose Merida
The people, the weather and the culture drew us to Merida. Merida was founded in 1542 and some of the original walls of the city still remain. We fell in love with our particular home and location where you can safely stroll the streets at anytime of the day or night. The antiquities are are endless and draw you in to history of the Yucatan which is quite different from the rest of Mexico.

Breakfast in the central courtyard by the waterfall. Take a swim and sun bath (clothing optional) and shower in your on suite mega-shower. Stroll to the zocalo, museums, art galleries and lunch at one of our lovely al fresca restaurants. Then drive 20 minutes for a stroll and sunset on the beach. Finally, enjoy the fine dining at a luxury hacienda on your way home to the "sanctuary".
